Royersford, PA.  After moving up from the U10-A Division to the larger field and team size of the U11-A Division, the West-Mont United Fury would play three pre-season mini games to begin defense of their 2009 EPYSA State Championship.   The girls would waste little time in setting the tone for the weekend, scoring 4 goals to route the Lionville Lions, dominate the Nether Providence HotShots, and blanking the Towamencin Tornadoes by 4 to end the morning.  The Fury would then kickoff the Battle at the Hilltop Tournament by taking on the Hulmeville Blast in a rematch of the 2009 EPYSA Playoffs.  Once again the Fury defense would shut down another opponent, not even allowing the Blast to cross midfield.  On the offense side of the ball, the Fury would use great team passing to tally another 4 goals to topple the Blast.  In the second full game, they would take on fellow club team, the West-Mont United Blues.  In another dominating passing game, the Fury would tally 3 more goals while notching another shutout.  On Sunday, the West-Mont United Fury would take on a charged up Methacton United squad.  They would put a great fight in the first half and challenge the Fury, but the second half would see the Fury place numerous shots on net until the game winner was scored midway through the half.  In the finale, the Fury would face the Nether Providence HotShots to determine the tournament champion.  In the end, the Fury would win 1-0 to cap their weekend without giving up any goals and only allowing 4 total shots to reach their keeper all weekend.

Downingtown, PA.  After a great start to their season, the West-Mont United Fury would ratchet up the competition level and travel to Downingtown to participate in the ultra tough SPIRIT Kickoff Classic.  This tournament would host some of the strongest teams along the east coast.  After some rain delays, the Fury would find themselves playing the FC Revolution Lightning.  The Lightning would come out strong, looking sharp and cruising to an early 2-0 lead in the first half.  In the second half, the Fury would pull it together and begin to use the passing game to open up some shots.  Juliana Alessandroni would net a goal 3 minutes into the second half that appeared to charge up the Fury.  Lauren Mensch, Camryn Jones, and Savannah Steckler would begin to shut down the Lightning, allowing Alana Dodson to tie the game at two goals apiece with Kaitlyn Casiano scoring the game winner in the closing seconds to complete a great comeback and reveal a team full of great heart and determination.

In their next game, the Fury would take on the Baltimore Bays in a possible preview of upcoming PAGS Conference action.  Taking advantage of the momentum gained by the earlier comeback, the girls would take an early lead as Hannah Thomas would net a goal before the end of the half.  In the second half, the girls would continue nifty passing to keep control of the game.  However, the Bays would make a game of it, using their own skills to tie game with approximately nine minutes to go.  The Fury would not break with Missy Moore and Alyssa Conway playing great defense, setting up a combination play:  Avery Cotter to Hannah Thomas who crossed to Sarafina Valenti to score the game winner with just over a minute to play.

This would set up the West-Mont United Fury to tackle HBC Impact (Huntington, NY) in the afternoon semi-final game.  Gabby Kane and Amanda Byrd would have a tight defensive grip on the Impact, keeping the ball on the offensive side of the field allowing Tierney McDonnell and Jackie Gonda to send nice through passes up to Kaitlyn Casiano for a tally and an early lead.  The game would go back and forth with some great up and down field play by both teams.  In the second half, the Impact would turn up the heat on the Fury, ultimately scoring two goals within minutes to take the lead.  HBC would need to hold off a furious surge by the Fury, who would run out of time and fall to a solid team.   The HBC Impact would go on to win the tournament with a shutout of the NJSA Sting in the finals, leaving our West-Mont United Fury girls as the only team to score on HBC all weekend while snagging third place honors via overall score.

West-Mont United Fury Capture EPYSA State Cup Championship

West Chester, PA – The West Mont United Fury squared off against HMMS United (Harrisburg, PA) (defending state champions) in a battle of top five ranked teams to determine the 2009 Pennsylvania U10 Girls Division State Championship.

The first half would see great ball control action by both teams.  The United would see some great cross field passes en route to the first shots of the game.  The Fury defense of Grace Gvodas, Missy Moore, and Gabby Kane would recover and move the ball up-field to allow the offense to place shots on net, nearly missing a high corner shot.  Strong mid-field play by Avery Cotter would allow Hannah Thomas, Camryn Jones, and Juliana Alessandroni more opportunities, but the United goalie stood strong.  As the half wound down, the United would mount another strong charge on net, but great play by Tierney McDonnell would keep the game scoreless at the half.

In the second half, Alyssa Conway and Lauren Mensch would join the defense fray and they also continue passing the ball up-field.  Assisting the mid-field and offense would be Amanda Byrd, Mikayla Teets, Jackie Gonda, and Elise DiGuiseppe.  These girls would continue to battle the United for position and ball control across the field.  Both the United and the Fury would create rush after rush through excellent passing and through balls.  With approximately 12 minutes left in the game, the Fury would mount a flurry of shots on net and Gabby Kane would send a rebound to the back of the net to give the Fury the lead.  The United would not go quietly and would mount a final few rushes of their own, clanking one off the post, and the others would be deterred by the Fury defense and a few spectacular saves by McDonnell.

The West Mont United Fury would win 1-0, giving the West Mont United Soccer Association its second champion in program history.  It would also give Head Coach Brian Jones and Assistant Coach Greg Alessandroni a title game in their final game
