Following the kick-off, Westlake mounted a long scoring drive that was completed with a scoring pass from quarterback Neil Uskali to running back Gianni Capri on a critical 4th down play. On the following defensive series, Westlake linebacker Clayton Kennelly intercepted a 3rd down pass attempt on the 40 yard line and and ran it all the way back to give Westlake a 14-6 lead that they would never relinquish. Westlake's defense held again and got the ball back on their own 35 yard line. The offense then manufactured a 65 yard scoring drive that was completed with a 30 yard touchdown pass from Uskali to slot receiver James Rodriguez giving the Braves a 18-8 halftime lead. Early in the 3rd quarter, the Westlake defense caused Santa Barbara to punt after outstanding run defense that held SB to -1 yard by the Westlake defensive line of Tony Mekari, Brennan Ray, Alex Gonzales and Oskar Goldstone. Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff for a terrific undefeated season (13 wins and no losses). Super Bowl Recap The Westlake Seniors defense has been outstanding all season. The Super Bowl would be no different. Simi had the ball first, and Westlake stopped Simi on 4 plays. Taking over at the Simi 40 yard line, the Braves moved the ball to the one yard line. On fourth and goal at the one, Dylan Ray carried it in for the touchdown. Neil Uskali hit Gianni Capri for the two point conversion and the Braves led 8 to 0. On Simi’s next possession, Westlake held Simi once again. Westlake took possession at their own 35 yard. The Braves mounted a sustained drive featuring two key plays. The first was a 15 yard pass to Jordan Pitcher giving the Brave a first down at the Simi 15 yard line. Then, on fourth down and long, a screen pass gave the Braves a first down at the four. Two plays later the Braves had their second touchdown and led 14 to 0 with six minutes left in the second quarter. Simi Valley’s potent offensive attack was a key reason they advanced to the Super Bowl. After a deep kick by Michael Ulmann, Simi took over at their 33 yard line. Facing a third and two, Simi got their first first down of the game. Simi’s quarterback would continually challenge the Westlake defense, as he was a threat to run or pass. Facing third and nine, and needing a first down to keep the drive alive and stay in the game, Simi’s quarterback scrambled to avoid a ferocious rush and completed a 20 yard pass to the Westlake 35. Another pass to the Westlake 6 gave Simi first and goal. Two plays later, Simi scored their first touchdown. A key tackle by Brennan Ray on the PAT kept the score at Westlake 14, Simi 6 going into half time. Whatever the Westlake coaches said at halftime, it worked. Westlake started the third quarter with the ball at their 39 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Dylan Ray ran the ball 61 yards for a touchdown. The two point conversion was a success giving Westlake a 22 to 6 lead. On Simi’s next possession, they were held once again and forced to punt deep in their own territory. On Westlake’s first play of the drive, and only their second offensive play of the half, Gianni Capril caught a screen pass for a 40 yard touchdown. Two plays in the second half, two touchdowns. Westlake led 28 to 6 with six minutes left in the third quarter.
On a subsequent drive, Simi would move the ball deep into Westlake territory. Facing 4th and 4 at the Westlake 20 yard line, Simi would run a quarterback draw, but he was stopped short of the first down by Alex Gonzalez and Irvin Diaz. With three minutes left, and Simi Valley’s hopes on the rise, everyone knew what was coming, an onside kick. And it worked. Simi took over at mid-field. On the next play, Simi completed a pass to the Westlake 14 yard line, but there was a Simi penalty and it was called back. The Braves stopped Simi on fourth down and ran out the clock for the victory, 28 to 12. Congratulations to the Westlake Senior Braves, 2008 GCYFL Super Bowl IV Champions. Week 8 Game Highlights Westlake Seniors continued their winning ways with a 40-26 victory over Simi Valley. After recovering an onside kick, Westlake scored a touchdown after three plays to lead 6 to 0. Westlake scored its second touchdown on defense. On a screen pass, Westlake linebacker Dylan Ray stripped the ball from the Simi running back and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown to give Westlake a 12 to 0 lead. The Westlake defense faced its greatest test of the season, as the Simi Offense ran a spread formation featuring deep passes and quarterback scrambling. Early in the second half, Westlake had a touchdown drive featuring runs of 40 and 24 yards by Gianni Capri. After Westlake took a commanding 32 to 8 lead, the game got interesting. With 6 starters removed from the game due to the GCYFL "piling it on" rule, Simi scored two quick touchdowns and 2 pt conversions to make the score 32 to 24, and Simi had the momentum. A dispute arose around when Westlake could put their 6 starters back in the game. As a result, after the kickoff, Westlake had the ball deep in their territory. On a Westlake punt, the snap went out of the end zone for a safety, and the lead was now 32 to 26, with Westlake having to kick off from their own 25 yard line due to a penalty. A game that just minutes before appeared to be a certain victory, was now in doubt. But Westlake responded. Jordan Pitcher intercepted a Simi pass at the 10 yard line. On the next drive, Dylan Ray had a 90 yard run for a touchdown, securing a 40 to 26 Westlake victory. Dylan Ray had an impressive 6 touchdowns on the day. Next up for Westlake Seniors is a road trip to Santa Barbara for an inter league gave with the undefeated SBYFL Santa Barbara Charges at Bishop Diego High School. J2 Blue won its 5th in a row, this time shutting out Moorpark Green 26-0. The J2 Blue offense was hitting on all cylinders, with its balanced running and passing attack, which was anchored by solid play by the offensive line, leading to 4 first half TDs by 4 different players. Will Saksa scored on a 45 yard run, Zach Bornstein scored on a 35 yard run and Nick Koshofer scored on a 15 yard run. Slot Back Jachwa Dolne also had a touchdown on a pass from Nick Koshofer. Running back Robbie Sneed performed well in relief throughout the second half, and newcomer to the QB position, Austin Schultz, settled in nicely in relief as the second half progressed. On the defensive side of the ball, J2 Blue had another great game, this time with OLB Austin Schultz and DE Colby Rogers leading the charge. If defense wins championships, J2 Blue is looking like a contender right now!!! J1 Black won a hard fought, double overtime defensive battle Saturday afternoon over the number two ranked J1 Simi Silver Vikings. At the end of regulation play, the score was tied 0-0. The Brave's defense held a very big and physical Viking's team in check all day. On defense, Dalton Flynn, Cooper Weiss, David Cisi, Nick Maclea, Matt Giraldo, Matt Arnold, Jesse Cuccia, DJ MIller and Sean Davoren all played their hearts out, tackled well and controlled a very talented back field for four quarters. Eric Corsello and Nick Julier played outstanding defense and made some game saving tackles. Nick Julier played safety and knocked down several key passes. Eric Corsello made a key interception in the fourth quarter stopping a Simi Valley drive. In overtime, Nick Julier ran the ball in for a score and Wes Massett connected on a pass play with Dalton Flynn for the extra points. The defense held Simi Valley in their next possession during their extra point attempt securing the victory. Congratulations J1 Black! Week 7 Game HighlightsThe undefeated (7-0) and first place Westlake Seniors continued their winning ways with a 29-6 victory over Oxnard. The Westlake defense got things going. A quarterback sack by Tony Mekari and a blocked punt by Clayton Kennely gave Westlake the ball deep in Oxnard territory. Neal Uskali hit Michael Ulmann on a screen pass for a quick 7-0 lead. The Westlake defensive line of Cole Lingo, Alex Gonazales, Brennan Ray, Tony Mekari and Jefferson Hagan controlled the line of scrimmage and applied constant pressure. Oxnard did not have a first down until there was less than a minute to go in the first half. After having a touchdown called back on the previous play and facing 4th and 25, Uskali hit Jordan Pitcher for a touchdown to give Westlake a 16 to 0 lead. Other highlights include Alex Gonzales forcing a fumble which was recovered by Kyle Erickson and a crowd pleasing knock down backfield block by Jack Gerstenberger. Andy Demello had a TD run, Cody Cordell had a TD reception and Irvin Diaz kicked 3 PAT’s. The Seniors are at Simi next Saturday for the first of three road games. J2 Blue advanced their record to 4-2 with another impressive shut out victory, this time winning 21-0 against a hard hitting and aggressive Ventura Outlaws team. The J2 Blue defense was rock solid once again, yielding only two first downs the entire game. The LB corps of Paul Ahn, Austin Schultz, Don Ohmer and Nick Caldwell led the way. On offense, QB Nick Koshofer completed 13 passes to 4 different receivers (Zach Bornstein, Jachwa Dolne, Will Saksa and Luke Kuchta) for over 160 yards. On three consecutive plays, it was the Will Saksa show, as Will tackled a Ventura runner at the Ventura 20 yard on the kickoff, recovered a fumble on the next play, and then scored a touchdown on a 20 yard run on the following play. Great game and all-around victory for J2 Blue. Week 6 Game Highlights The Westlake Seniors improved to 6 and 0 with a 33-6 victory over Ventura at Westlake Stadium. The Westlake defense was formidable, holding Ventura scoreless, as Ventura's only points came on a fumble recovery for a touchdown. The Seniors final touchdown was a 10 yard touchdown pass from Cody Cordell to Jacob Blaznek. Next up for the Senior team is a home game against Oxnard. Westlake J2 Blue continued its winning ways against a tough and aggressive Camarillo team. J2's offense was clicking in the first quarter, with Zach Bornstein, Chandler Whitbord and Nick Koshofer all running for huge gains, but a record 7 penalties killed the drives ... and the offense's momentum. The offense was tested throughout the game by Camarillo's aggressive blitzing defense, and as a result notched its lowest point total in 3 weeks ... putting up only 13 points. The J2 defense however, remained rock solid, completely shutting down the Camarillo offense. But for a substitution error late in the 4th quarter, J2 Blue would have pitched its third shut-out in a row. Regardless, J2 notched its third win in a row by a final score of 13-6, and took over third place in its Division. Westlake J2 Orange defeated Ventura 20-0 in a game at Westlake Stadium. J2 Orange's first touchdown was the result of a 20 yard touchdown pass over the middle from Nick Dallas to Slater Brennan. Dallas also ran for a touchdown later in the game. Key defensive plays were interceptions by Austin Brown and Chase Gardella, and a clutch drive stopping 4th down tackle by Steve Firestone. Brian Baldwin had numerous big runs during the game. On one drive that started at Westlake's own 38 yard line, iit only took two plays for Baldwin to get the ball to to the Ventura 12 yard line. Baldwin also had a 48 yard touchdown run. Week 5 Highlights The Westlake Seniors improved to 5 and 0 and sole possession of first place in the Senior Division with a 30-6 victory over previously undefeated Valley at Westlake Stadium. Once again the Westlake Senior defense played well. After Westlake took a 14-0 lead, Valley had a 40 yard run to the 9 yard line, where Andy DeMello made a touchdown saving tackle. But Valley would get no further on that drive. On the next three plays Valley lost yardage on tackles by Tony Mekari, Andy DeMello and Dylan Ray. The Braves held on 4th and 23 and got the ball back. The Braves offense moved the ball efficiently throughout the game. Gianni Capri and Andy DeMello both had long runs of 30 and 45 yards respectively. Dylan Ray scored a couple of touchdowns on runs and screen passes. Westlake J2 Blue pitched its second road shut-out in a row, beating Oxnard 30-0. The J2 defense was impressive, swarming and making tackles all game long with the help of some great blitz packages and defensive schemes. The offense was equally impressive, again mounting a near-perfectly executed attack that balanced inside runs, outside runs and passes all over the field. The story of the game though was the tremendous play by J2 Blue's breakout return specialist, Chander Whitbord, who broke not one, but two returns for TDs. Since the second half of game No. 2, J2 Blue has outscored its opponents 72-8. In Westlake J2 Orange's game against Valley, one of the highlights of the game was a 76 yard run by Brian Baldwin, from the Westlake 14 yard line to the Valley 10 yard line. The defense adjusted quickly and contained Valley’s all-star running back and kept him out of the end zone the rest of the day. After a long and hard week of practice, J1 Black earned a well deserved victory. Week 4 Highlights The Westlake Seniors improved to 4-0 with a 28-0 victory over Oxnard. As in previous games, the Seniors defensive unit was up to the task, holding Oxnard scoreless. If defense wins championships, the Senior team is in good shape. Westlake J2 Orange defeated Santa Paula 28-8 in a game at Westlake. Perhaps the key drive in the game occurred at the end of the 2nd quarter. With Westlake leading 6-0 and the ball at midfield with just seconds remaining, Nick Dallas hit Alex Egurbide with a 45 yard pass and Alex was tackled close to the goal line. Westlake quickly spiked the ball to stop the clock and on the ensuing play Brian Baldwin ran it in for a touchdown as the clock expired, giving Westlake a 14-0 halftime lead. Next up for J2 Orange is a game this Saturday versus Valley at Westlake at 3:00pm. Westlake J2 Blue team posted an impressive 34-0 victory over Harvard-Westlake. RB Zach Bornstein rushed for over 100 yards and 3 TDs in just a quarter and a half of play. QB Nick Koshofer led the team to 4 perfectly executed scoring drives on their first 4 possessions of the game. The play by the offensive line (C Connor Lervold, G's Don Ohmer and Casey Rich, and T's Patrick Mekari and Nick Caldwell) was outstanding, and when those big men got their shot at running the ball throughout the 3rd and 4th quarters, they were making HUGE gains. The defense, led by great play by LBs Don Ohmer and Paul Ahn, was extremely impressive in pitching the shut-out. Westlake Bantam Orange improved to 4-0 and sole possession of 1st place in the Bantam division with a 16-14 victory over previously undefeated Valley at Westlake stadium. Next up for Bantam Orange is Moorpark Gold. Week 3 Highlights The Westlake Seniors improved their record to 3-0 with a convincing 34-14 victory over previously undefeated Simi Valley. In the 4th quarter, Jachwa had a 34 yard reception for a touchdown |
