The Westlake Braves (14-0) defeated the Santa Barbara Chargers (12-2) in a united bowl (GCYFL vs. TVYFL) championship senior game. The Santa Barbara Chargers took an early 8-0 lead on their first possession with a long drive that started on their own 45 yard line. Following the kick-off, Westlake mounted a long scoring drive that was completed with a scoring pass from quarterback Neil Uskali to running back Gianni Capri on a critical 4th down play. On the following defensive series, Westlake linebacker Clayton Kennelly intercepted a 3rd down pass attempt on the 40 yard line and and ran it all the way back to give Westlake a 14-6 lead that they would never relinquish. Westlake's defense held again and got the ball back on their own 35 yard line. The offense then manufactured a 65 yard scoring drive that was completed with a 30 yard touchdown pass from Uskali to slot receiver James Rodriguez giving the Braves a 18-8 halftime lead. Early in the 3rd quarter, the Westlake defense caused Santa Barbara to punt after outstanding run defense that held SB to -1 yard by the Westlake defensive line of Tony Mekari, Brennan Ray, Alex Gonzales and Oskar Goldstone. The Westlake offense took possession and scored quickly on a 50 yard touchdown pass from Uskali to wide receiver Kyle Erickson pushing the score to 24-8. Jordan Pitcher caught a the 2 point wheel route throw to push the score to 26-8. Defensive back James Rodriguez intercepted a pass late in the 3rd quarter giving the Westlake offense another chance to ice the game. The Westlake offense struck quickly with a 25 yard scoring strike from Uskali to Erickson; Erickson made a great catch in the back of the end zone on a fade route giving the Braves a 32-8 lead. Westlake Seniors are GCYFL IV Super Bowl Champions The Westlake Seniors defeated Simi Valley 28 to 12 to win the GCYFL Super Bowl. Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff for a terrific undefeated season (13 wins and no losses). Super Bowl Recap The Westlake Seniors defense has been outstanding all season. The Super Bowl would be no different. Simi had the ball first, and Westlake stopped Simi on 4 plays. Taking over at the Simi 40 yard line, the Braves moved the ball to the one yard line. On fourth and goal at the one, Dylan Ray carried it in for the touchdown. Neil Uskali hit Gianni Capri for the two point conversion and the Braves led 8 to 0. On Simi’s next possession, Westlake held Simi once again. Westlake took possession at their own 35 yard. The Braves mounted a sustained drive featuring two key plays. The first was a 15 yard pass to Jordan Pitcher giving the Brave a first down at the Simi 15 yard line. Then, on fourth down and long, a screen pass gave the Braves a first down at the four. Two plays later the Braves had their second touchdown and led 14 to 0 with six minutes left in the second quarter. Simi Valley’s potent offensive attack was a key reason they advanced to the Super Bowl. After a deep kick by Michael Ulmann, Simi took over at their 33 yard line. Facing a third and two, Simi got their first first down of the game. Simi’s quarterback would continually challenge the Westlake defense, as he was a threat to run or pass. Facing third and nine, and needing a first down to keep the drive alive and stay in the game, Simi’s quarterback scrambled to avoid a ferocious rush and completed a 20 yard pass to the Westlake 35. Another pass to the Westlake 6 gave Simi first and goal. Two plays later, Simi scored their first touchdown. A key tackle by Brennan Ray on the PAT kept the score at Westlake 14, Simi 6 going into half time. Whatever the Westlake coaches said at halftime, it worked. Westlake started the third quarter with the ball at their 39 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Dylan Ray ran the ball 61 yards for a touchdown. The two point conversion was a success giving Westlake a 22 to 6 lead. On Simi’s next possession, they were held once again and forced to punt deep in their own territory. On Westlake’s first play of the drive, and only their second offensive play of the half, Gianni Capril caught a screen pass for a 40 yard touchdown. Two plays in the second half, two touchdowns. Westlake led 28 to 6 with six minutes left in the third quarter.
On a subsequent drive, Simi would move the ball deep into Westlake territory. Facing 4th and 4 at the Westlake 20 yard line, Simi would run a quarterback draw, but he was stopped short of the first down by Alex Gonzalez and Irvin Diaz. With three minutes left, and Simi Valley’s hopes on the rise, everyone knew what was coming, an onside kick. And it worked. Simi took over at mid-field. On the next play, Simi completed a pass to the Westlake 14 yard line, but there was a Simi penalty and it was called back. The Braves stopped Simi on fourth down and ran out the clock for the victory, 28 to 12. Congratulations to the Westlake Senior Braves, 2008 GCYFL Super Bowl IV Champions. 2009 Westlake Braves Board of Directors
