Questions & Answers

When do practices and games take place?
Practices will begin in November and we continue until the end of April. Please check our website in November for the full practice and tournament schedules.

Where will practices be held?
All practices will take place in the KISD area

What is the difference between a Young Gun division I and division II team?
Young Gun teams are required by the GHYLA (Greater Houston Youth Lacrosse Assoc.) to denote our Young Gun team(s) as either competitive(division 1) or majority developmental or new players to the sport(division 2). The Cannons select the division of our young guns based on the experience of the majority of the players or if we have enough players split into 2 teams.

Does limited places imply WHLC is a "select" team?
Are we open to everyone? Yes.
Are our places limted? Yes.
Are we a "select" team? No.

The Cannons are an open team that is limited to make sure that the players we receive get the best coach to player ratio instruction. As in classroom teaching on any level is best when there is no student left to "slip through the cracks" or unattended to. We believe, as an organization, that players of any ability can become better when self-motivated, practice stick-skills on their own and properly coached. However, this does not imply that we don't expect the very best effort and attitude from our players, either at practice or in a game.  Additionally, this philosophy plus keeping a limited amount of players will lead to a greater amount of playing time for all.

Are you affiliated with a High School Team?
We are not affiliated with any of the local High Schools. It is our intention to work alongside all 3 teams in Katy (Cinco Ranch, Katy, Taylor). The WHLC will recommend all prospective players to think carefully about what they hope to achieve from their Lacrosse, and choose a team that can meet their needs. Playing time policies, skill development and coaches credentials all need to be considered when selecting the appropiate team for your child.

Can you tell me what the fees are used for at WHLC?
We use the fees to cover a variety of expenses. Uniforms (Shorts, Pennies), Field Upkeep, Equipment (Goals, Nets, etc), Additional Insurance, Head Coach & Assistant Coach Expenses, Website, Tournament & League Fees, Referees, the list is endless. We will take great care in distributing all fees collected.

What is the Club's Policy on Playing Time?
WHLC believes that all youth lacrosse players need ample playing time during both practices and games to develop in a sport and to get the most enjoyment out of the game (AYL, 2007).

We follow a simple equation:

Attendance** + Effort + Attitude = Playing Time

Players who attend practice, try hard at practice and on their own time as well as follow the Code of Conduct will receive ample playing time. Players who do not attend every practice, do not show up on time, do not try their hardest (this also includes practicing stick-skills on your own) and do not show respect  for coaches, officials, opponents, and teammates will not get as much playing time as teammates.  Please discuss this policy with your child (AYL, 2007).

Our Division II Young Gun team is primarily developmental which will enable playing time to be distributed more equally. However, the Division I Young Gun and Middle School Team strives to be competitive, preparing your son for High School Lacrosse. During District and Tournament games our Coaches will have to make decisions, this  may result in a player having less time on the field. We ask parents to be reasonable and responsible and prepare your son for this. (NB: Fees cover practices and games). However, by limiting our numbers playing time will naturally be increased for all.

**Attendance effected by participation in multiple sports will be taken into consideration.
