Wednesday, July 12 Weather plays havoc with schedule yet again Rain and unplayable field conditions have disrupted the schedule yet again. Tuesday night's game had to be cancelled due to the unplayable field conditions left by the powerful thunderstorms that blew through the area, despite the best efforts of both teams. Now tonight's games also had to be rescheduled due to the continuing rains. With the hope that the rains will subside and that the field will dry out, the rescheduled games are as follows: Sunday, July 16 5:30 Willis Tent @ Short Cut 6:45 Franco-American @ Mario's Restaurant Sunday, July 23 5:30 Z's Sports Shop @ Drews 6:45 Mustang's @ Healy Oil Saturday, July 15 Charity Golf Tournament Short Cuts manager Bill Bowser has played in the following event for the past 3 years, and suggests that it is one of the best run tournaments around. Thursday, July 6 All Star Game a Success The Westford Softball All-Star game that pitted the stars of the Over-30 League against the Co-Rec league resulted in the Over-30 stars losing in a slug fest. The Co-Rec Stars posted 12 runs in the top of the first and 9 in the top of the second, then cruised to a 28-21 win. Healy Oil's Bill McLaughlin would have to be considered the offensive MVP for the Over-30 squad as he launched 2 Grand Slam Home Runs. Bill ended up going 3-3 with the 2 HRs, along with 8 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Other notable offensive performances included the Mustangs Don Cusano (2-2, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 RS), Healy's Bill Martin (2-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, and 2 RS), Willis Tent's Bill Andrews (2-3, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 RS), and lead off hitter John Bodi from Z's (4-4 with 3 RS). In addition, the Home Run Derby competition was held after the game. With their success in the competition, Healy Oil reps Bill Martin and Bill McLaughlin put the league on notice that Healy's will be a factor during the second half of the season as they prepare to defend their title. Along with Don Cusano of the Mustangs, the Over-30 Squad slugged their way to 3 of the final 4 spots in the competition. However, on his final swing, Dan Corey of the Co-Rec league's Red Sox defeated Cusano to win the HR Derby. Both leagues would like to thank the ASA umpiring crew of 3 that donated their time and helped make the game a success. The two leagues collected almost $500 from the game- all of these proceeds are to be donated to the Westford Food Pantry. Monday, July 24 Local Softball Team Collecting for Charity Update: The Westford Waves softball program would like to thank all those who contributed to their successful equipment drive. And, as a league, we would like to congratulate the girls and their coaches, parents, and many others for undertaking this charitable endeavor. ******************************************************************* In keeping with our League's desire to promote softball in the local community, we would like to spotlight the endeavors of one of the local Westford softball programs. The Westford Waves are running a charity softball clinic for Girls Inc., a girls club for underprivileged girls from Lowell. This effort was featured in the Westford Eagle. Several of the members of our league have daughters in this program and they could use your assistance. Not only are the girls running the clinic, but they need to find softball equipment (new or used) that they can donate to the program. Girl's Inc. has no equipment. If anyone has any extra equipment that they can donate it would be greatly appreciated. They are looking for balls (especially 11" ), gloves, and bats, but will take equipment bags, batting gloves, etc. The girls served are mostly in the 4-9 age group. Please bring any donations to your next game with Willis Tent (Glenn Meurer), Healy Oil (Steve Frankel), or Franco (Dean Wormell). In addition, donations can be brought to Cumberland Farms on Littleton Road, Rapid Refill on Route 40 or Nab One Stop on Brookside Road. If you have any questions, please contact league member Steve Gomes. Wednesday, August 23 Jockeying for Play Off Seedings Highlights Last Week of Regular Season With a 9-5 win over Willis Tent, Mario's Restaurant clinched the last playoff spot of the 2006 season. However, with three nights still to play due to early season rain outs, a number of teams are still fighting for their seeding in the tournament. With a 1 1/2 game lead, Z's Sports Shop leads in the race for the first round byes awarded to the first and second place finishers. Even with two games to go are the Mustangs and Drew Farms. None of these teams has guaranteed themselves a bye yet, making this last week critical to each squad. Whichever team does not earn the bye is guaranteed the third seed in the first round, a best of three series. Healy Oil is the front runner for the fourth seed. Lurking close behind them is a Short Cut team that would need to get very hot during this week of make up games to pass Healy and gain the home field advantage in the #4-#5 series. Mario's would need to win their last three games and get some help to jump up to the fifth seed. Barring any additional weather problems, and this season you can't rule them out, the playoffs are due to start on Wednesday, August 30, at 6:30 PM with #3 hosting #6 followed by #4 hosting #5 at 7:45. Friday, August 25 FRIDAY NIGHT GAMES POSTPONED Once again, the weather has caused a postponement of games. Friday night's rained out contests will be now be played on Sunday, August 27. 5:30 Mustangs @ Mario's Restaurant 6:45 Z's Sports Shop @- Short Cut Sunday, August 27 Games washed out for third time For the third time this season, the weather has caused a postponement of this set of games. Sunday night's rained out contests will be now be played on Wednesday, August 30. 6:30 Mustangs @ Mario's Restaurant 7:45 Z's Sports Shop @ Short Cut This postponement will also affect the play offs, pushing all games back one date. The first round series will now start on Tuesday, September 5. Monday, August 21 Drew Farms - Short Cut Postponed Game RESCHEDULED The game between Drew Farms and Short Cut that was postponed after 4 innings on June 20 has been rescheduled to Tuesday, August 29. The last three innings will be played before the Z's-Drew Farms game scheduled for 7:45. NOTE: Due to rain, the continuation of this game has been moved to Tuesday, September 5. Tuesday, August 29 Make Up Games Rained Out In what has become the recurring theme of the season, weather has forced the postponement of tonight's three games. These games will now be played on Tuesday, September 5, forcing the start of the first round play off games to Wednesday (9/6). 6:30 Mario's Restaurant @ Short Cut 7:45 Continuation of Drew Farms @ Short Cut game from 6/21 8:00 (or immediately following the Drew Farms - Short Cut game) Drew Farms @ Z's Sports Shop Wednesday, August 23 PLAYOFF SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED The 2006 playoff schedule has been revised due to the weather forcing games to be rescheduled from Wednesday, August 30 and Tuesday, September 5. Tuesday, September 5 Make up games First Round (Best of 3 Series) Wednesday, September 6 6:30 Mario's Restaurant @ 3rd Place Team 7:45 5th Place Team @ 4th Place Team Friday, September 8 6:30 4th Place Team @ 5th Place Team 7:45 3rd Place Team @ Mario's Restaurant Sunday, September 10 5:30 Mario's Restaurant @ 3rd Place Team (IF NECESSARY) 6:45 5th Place Team @ 4th Place Team (IF NECESSARY) Second Round (Best of 5 Series) Tuesday, September 12 6:30 Lowest Remaining Seed @ Z's Sports Shop 7:45 Highest Remaining Seed @ 2nd Place Team Series will continue on Friday (9/15) and Sunday (9/17). Wednesday (9/13) is an off day. The series will continue on Tuesday (9/19) and Friday (9/22) IF NECESSARY. Game times and home teams will alternate from game to game. Finals will begin as soon as possible after the conclusion of the semi-final series, but no later than Sunday (9/24). The full schedule has been posted to the calendar. Please note that this schedule is based on at least one series in each round going the maximum number of games. It also counts on complete cooperation from the weather. If either of these does not happen, the schedule will be adjusted accordingly. Wednesday, August 30 Z's Claims Regular Season Title As Play Off Seeds Come Into Focus With the completion of Wednesday night's games, the 2006 play off seedings became a bit more clear. One more seed was determined and two clubs were put in must win situations to earn higher seeds. With a tight 9-8 victory over Short Cut, Z's Sports Shop claimed the Regular Season title. This is the fifth time in six years that Z's has won at least a share of the title. Last year, the Mustangs shared the title with them. The only year that Z's has not claimed a share of the title in this streak was 2003- the year the squad won their first play off title. The regular season title earns Z's the number one seed and a first round bye. The Mustangs 20-4 victory over Mario's Restaurant (in 5 innings) puts them in position to claim second place and the second bye. Drew Farms is tied with the Mustangs with two games in hand. Because the Mustangs own the tie breaker (a 4-0 advantage in the regular season series), Drews is forced to win both games next Tuesday. The schedule has them completing a suspended game against Short Cut and then closing the regular season against Z's. Mario's had already locked up the sixth seed and a date against the third place team in the first round. This series is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 6, at 6:30 PM. Drew Farms is not the only team going into Tuesday night's games with something to play for. Short Cut needs to win both of their games to pull into a tie with Healy Oil at 14-10. Such a tie would give Short Cut the fourth seed and home field advantage in their series against Healy by virtue of a 2-1 advantage in their regular season series. Healy Oil and Short Cut will open their playoff series on Wednesday, September 6, at 7:45 PM. Wednesday, September 6 Play Off First Round Set as Drew Farms Claims Second Bye Drew Farms won two games on the oft-rescheduled final night of the regular season to claim the second bye and setting the first round play off match ups. Short Cut defeated Mario's Restaurant in the first game of the night to keep their fourth place hopes alive. However, Drew's victory in the continuation of their suspended game from June 21 locked Short Cut into the fifth seed against fourth seeded Healy Oil. Drew then went on to beat regular season champion Z's Sports Shop to clinch the second seed and the other first round bye. First Round (Best of 3 Series) Wednesday, September 6 6:30 Mario's Restaurant @ Mustangs 7:45 Short Cut @ Healy Oil Friday, September 8 6:30 Healy Oil @ Short Cut 7:45 Mustangs @ Mario's Restaurant Sunday, September 10 5:30 Mario's Restaurant @ Mustangs (IF NECESSARY) 6:45 Short Cut @ Healy Oil (IF NECESSARY) Thursday, September 7 Higher Seeds Prevail on Opening Night of Playoffs On the opening night of the 2006 Play Offs, it was the higher seeds taking both games. In the first game, the Mustangs beat Mario's Restaurant 9-7. In the nightcap, Healy Oil claimed a 13-10 victory over Short Cut. First Round (Best of 3 Series) Wednesday, September 6 6:30 Mario's Restaurant - 7 @ Mustangs - 9 (Mustangs Lead series 1-0) 7:45 Short Cut - 10 @ Healy Oil - 13 (Healy Oil Leads series 1-0) Friday, September 8 6:30 Healy Oil @ Short Cut 7:45 Mustangs @ Mario's Restaurant Sunday, September 10 5:30 Mario's Restaurant @ Mustangs (IF NECESSARY) 6:45 Short Cut @ Healy Oil (IF NECESSARY) Please note the following scenarios regarding Sunday: - IF both Mario's Restaurant and Short Cut win Friday, Sunday's schedule is played as shown above. The second round would then begin on Tuesday, September 12. - IF either Mario's Restaurant or Short Cut win Friday, but not both, then the third game of the series will be played on Sunday at 5:30. This would mean a time change if it is the Short Cut - Healy Oil series that needs to be finished. The second round would then begin on Tuesday, September 12. - IF both the Mustangs and Healy Oil win Friday, Round Two begins in place of the scheduled games on Sunday (9/10) as follows: 5:30 Healy Oil @ Z's Sports Shop 6:45 Mustangs @ Drew Farms Friday, September 8 Healy Oil and Mustangs Advance to Second Round The second night of the 2006 Play Offs was a perfect night for a ball game. And for the higher seeds, as both completed two games series sweeps to advance to the Second Round of the playoffs. In the first game of the night, Healy Oil advanced with a 5 inning 14-1 victory over Short Cut. In the second game, Mustangs jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Mario's Restaurant after the first inning and coasted to a 15-4 win. First Round (Best of 3 Series) Wednesday, September 6 6:30 Mario's Restaurant - 7 @ Mustangs - 9 (Mustangs Lead series 1-0) 7:45 Short Cut - 10 @ Healy Oil - 13 (Healy Oil Leads series 1-0) Friday, September 8 6:30 Healy Oil - 14 @ Short Cut - 1 (Healy Oil WINS series 2-0) 7:45 Mustangs - 15 @ Mario's Restaurant - 4 (Mustangs WINS series 2-0) Sunday, September 10 - Second Round Begins 5:30 Healy Oil @ Z's Sports Shop 6:45 Mustangs @ Drew Farms Sunday, September 10 Second Round Series Openers Go To Visitors On another beautiful night for softball, the opening games of both second round play off series went to the visiting teams. In the first game, Healy Oil overcame a first inning 2-run HR by OF Jerry Cressman of Z's Sports Shop to win 5-2. The big blow came in the fourth inning when Healy's LF Bill McLaughlin cleared the bases with a Grand Slam that bounced off the light tower. The second game came down to the seventh inning tied at 5. The Mustangs loaded the bases with 2 outs and managed to push home a run to defeat Drew Farms 6-5. Both series continue on Tuesday night, first game starting at 6:30, with the Mustangs hosting Drews followed by Z's at Healy. Friday, September 8 Second Round Play Off Schedule Announced With both the Mustangs and Healy Oil sweeping their first round playoff series, the second round match ups have been set. And they look very familiar. Regular season champion Z's Sports Shop will meet defending champion Healy Oil in a rematch of one of last year's second round series. Healy Oil swept Z's last year on their way to an undefeated romp through all three rounds of the play offs. In the second series, Drew Farms comes off the bye they earned as the second place team to once again face the Mustangs. This time around it is Drews that is the higher seed. Second Round (Best of 5 Series) Sunday, September 10 5:30 Healy Oil @ Z's Sports Shop 6:45 Mustangs @ Drew Farms Tuesday, September 12 6:30 Drew Farms @ Mustangs 7:45 Z's Sports Shop @ Healy Oil Friday, September 15 6:30 Healy Oil @ Z's Sports Shop 7:45 Mustangs @ Drew Farms Sunday, September 17 5:30 Drew Farms @ Mustangs (IF NECESSARY) 6:45 Z's Sports Shop @ Healy Oil (IF NECESSARY) Tuesday, September 19 6:30 Healy Oil @ Z's Sports Shop (IF NECESSARY) 7:45 Mustangs @ Drew Farms (IF NECESSARY) Finals will begin as soon as possible after the conclusion of the semi-final series, but no later than Friday (9/22), weather permitting. Game time for each of these contests is 6:30. Wednesday, September 13 Play Off Series Heat Up Game 2 of the second round series was ruled by comebacks in both contests. In the first game of the night, a Todd Shepard 2 run HR brought Drew Farms to within one in the seventh, but the Mustangs held on to win 6-5. In the second game of the night, Z's Sports Shop put up 4 runs in the first before Healy Oil could record an out, but then gave up 5 in the bottom of the inning and 11 in the second to fall behind 16-4. An 8 run inning got Z's back into the game and eventually sent the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Larry Zupkosky singled to plate the go ahead run. In the bottom of the inning, Healy Oil's lead off hitter Al Boisvert doubled, but never got any further. The 22-21 final was reminiscent of games from years past when offense ruled the game. Game 3 of each series is scheduled to be played on Friday evening, September 15. Friday, September 15 Mustangs Sweep Into Finals The Mustangs were the first team to earn a berth in the 2006 Finals. Their 8-3 victory over Drew Farms completed a three game sweep. Meanwhile, in the first game, Healy Oil jumped out to an early lead and held off Z's Sports Shop attempt at repeating their late game heroics of Game 2. Due to the Mustangs sweep, the Z's Sports Shop - Healy Oil game is the only one on Sunday and will be moved into the earlier 5:30 slot per league rule. Sunday, September 17 5:30 Z's Sports Shop @ Healy Oil Tuesday, September 19 6:30 Healy Oil @ Z's Sports Shop (IF NECESSARY) Finals will begin as soon as possible after the conclusion of the semi-final series, but no later than Friday (9/22), weather permitting.
