Official Announcement

The Westchester Packers would like to announce their first head coaching change in over twenty years as Majority Team Owner Michael Elia steps in to takes over the reins.  Mike came to the Packer organization as a player more than 10 years ago as a tight-end before becoming a member of the front office two seasons ago.  While Mike doesn’t always share the same traits or views of his predecessor, the most important thing the two men have in common is their determination continue the revitalization of the Packer Franchise back towards its winning ways.

Mikes also share the same distaste for losing every team owner has and feels the restructuring of front-office responsibilities will be a significant step towards the goal of defending our hard-won championship title and putting forth the best results on the field every week.

The Next Two Weekends Are Mandatory Practice

Listen up Packers.

While the numbers at practice has been good, they can be and will be better going forward for the following reasons.  First, News12 told us that they will be taping one of our practices for their sports segments with reporter Walt Fowler.  Second, the coordinators will be giving out the playbooks and we need to see everyone for this.  Finally, the coaches and management will be using this time to establish the final depth chart.  So if you want your name penciled in as a starter, you better show us you want it.

Packers Preseason Practice and Game Schedule Is Set

The 2007 BNEFF CHAMPION Westchester Packers will prepare for their title defense when preseason camp opens up on July 12th @ Tibbetts Brook Park from 10 AM till 12:30 PM.  Practice will occur every Saturday and Sunday from that point on till the start of the regular season.

Management is also working on setting up a preseason game against the NorthWest Giants of the now defunct DVIFL.  Those that don't know, the Giants were the 2007 champions of that league.  The event is being set-up to be played in Stamford, Ct. in mid August.  It will be played in honor of the two children that were lost by one of our teammates, Eric Stephens.  The proceeds at the gate will be donated to the Stamford Youth Football League.  The event will be known as THE CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS.  Stay tuned for further details of the event.

Yonkers Gladiators Youth Football Program will train with the Packers

On Saturday, July 19 2008, at 12:30pm, the Westchester Packers will be running a simulated one-day football mini camp for the youngsters of the Yonkers Gladiators Youth Football Program, sponsored by the Nepperhan Community Center.  For one day, the youngsters will be running along side their larger counter-parts and going through the same drills the Packers used to prepare for their championship season in 2007.  It should be both a fun afternoon and an unique learning experience for the Gladiators.  In addition, if all goes well, the Packers will either finish the simulated minicamp with a scrimmage against the Gladiators or invite the youngsters back to one their games in the near future.

Now the Gladiators are the only tackle football program for children aged 7 to 14 in Yonkers and is one of the many sports programs sponsored by the Nepperhan Community Center (NCC).  NCC believes in using sports and other interactive programs to build self-esteem and character and the Packers look forward to giving their wholehearted support to the cause.  The Packers are making a strong community outreach effort this year and really appreciate the opportunity given to them by NCC and would like people to come out and support this fine program.

Please visit http://yonkersgladiators.com for information about the Gladiators and their sponsor the Nepperhan Community Center .

League News

The league has changed it's legal name to the Big Northeast Football Federation (BNEFF).  With that change came a new league website.  You can now keep up with all the news that goes on in the league at www.leaguelineup.com/bneff.

The BNEFF is also expanding.  Commissioner Dexter Girven and several league owners will be welcoming in several teams in the next couple of weeks for the 2008 campaign.  We are also excited about the affiliation that we now have with the Deleware Valley Independant Football League (DVIFL).  Every year, we will have one crossover game with a team from that league.  Also, the champions of each league will play in a bowl game that will take place down south.

Congratulations to Dexter Girven on a job well done.
