Thursday, December 18 WRBA Lighting Project The second major phase of West Raleigh Baseball's facility improvement plan is now in progress. For the next few weeks, there will be heavy equipment and lighting poles and materials around the facility, so please do not enter the construction areas. The primary beneficiary of the new lighting will be the Girls Softball program, which will now have more game and practice flexibility with new lights on Nowell Field. The existing lighting on Burke and Woodard fields is also being replaced, which will make significant improvements in the nighttime playability of those fields, and combined lighting of all three fields should consume less energy than the old lights on just two fields. Wednesday, December 17 West Raleigh Facilities Improvements West Raleigh Baseball aims to provide the very best baseball experience in our area. An important part of that experience is the quality of the playing and practice facilities. For several years we have seen the facilities "aging", and at the same time we have felt pressure to improve the caliber of the facilities to match the caliber of the baseball at West Raleigh. In 2004 West Raleigh Baseball surveyed families about what improvements they would like to see in the West Raleigh facilities. During 2005, we engaged engineering firm Withers & Ravenel to survey the property and help us determine how we might best utilize the property we have, and how we can make it the finest youth baseball facility in the area, incorporating survey feedback from the families. We have determined a general overall plan and project phasing. As the plans are completed and approved by the West Raleigh Exchange Club Board, we will be sharing more details with the West Raleigh families. In general, we made some playing surface, drainage, irrigation, parking, and safety improvements during the "Phase 1" work done during the winter of 2006-2007. In 2007-2008 in "Phase 2", we are lighting the Minor League / Softball field (with future expansion possible). In future phases, we are evaluating moving the Junior League program to a 90-foot high school regulation field, and providing an all-weather batting and pitching training facility and artificial surface practice infield behind a 'shortened' Woodard Field. Additional plans call for improving the parking situation at West Raleigh Exchange Park, and providing expanded meeting space in the Exchange Club's Williams Center to permit coaching clinics, training, and larger meetings. All of these plans are subject to the approval of the Exchange Club, local authorities, and of course, will require substantial fund-raising efforts. West Raleigh Baseball Association is not just tapping the parents for funds - we are also actively seek corporate donations, sponsorships, in-kind gifts, and will explore various other ways to obtain the money it will take to complete these ambitious projects. Please help support us in making West Raleigh the best place to play baseball in North Carolina, and please bear with us - while we are "under construction". As we progress we will maintain a web page devoted to progress and news regarding our facilities improvements. West Raleigh Baseball would like to thank Sponsor Withers & Ravenel for their generous assistance in preparing our early site Master Concept Plans.
