Midget Mustangs Gallop to OBA title
Sports - Another tournament, another trophy for the appropriately named Welland Harpwood's Trophies Mustangs.
Last weekend in Mississauga the midget team went 5-0 to win the Ontario Baseball Association title, improving their record at tournaments this season to 20-0.
Geoff Strong, Adam Crumb and Rob Nixon combined to pitch a four-hitter as the Mustangs blanked the Woodstock Wranglers 5-0 in the championship final.
Welland was only up heading into the fourth inning, when consecutive singles from Justin Young, Will Mathieson and Zac Fisher led to four runs, more than enough of a cushion.
In their opening game at the tournament, the Mustangs exploded for seven runs in the top of the first inning in a 14-2 defeat of Guelph.
Jon Hiller, Drew Pettit and Young each hit two-run home runs, while Hiller went the distance in the five-inning, mercy-rule victory. He struck out five, while allowing only three hits.
With his 90 mile-per-hour fastball blazing and his curve buckling the knees of opposing batters, Strong fanned a season-high 15 batters and lost a no-hit bid with two out in the sixth in an 8-0 victory over Simcoe.
Strong collected a double as well as a triple and Pettit had three hits as Welland defeated Woodstock 11-7 to clinch a berth in the semifinals.
Hiller pitched another mercy-rule completion - this time, scattering four hits while striking out three - in a 10-0 victory over Ancaster.
Dan Cavasin, Young, Mathieson, Pettit and Strong had two hits apiece for the Mustangs, who outscored their opponents 48-9 over the course of the five-game tournament.
It was the fifth OBA title for Strong, Young, Nixon and Hiller.
