MAJOR PEEWEES WIN BATTLE OF WELLAND
Randy Gazzola threw a complete-game, one-hitter to top Tayler Sagloski in a pitchers duel as the S-N-S Pavement Mustangs tripled the Border City Castings Mustangs 3-1 in the baseball battle of Welland.
With the victory, the city's major peewee entry in the Niagara District Baseball Association improved to 3-0 in the round-robin portion of the playoffs and clinched a berth in the finals against the Niagara Falls Falcons.
Gazzola had 11 strikeouts and walked four in his gem on the mound for S-N-S, while Sagloski scatted, fanned five and walked one in his route-going effort for minor peewee Border City Castings.
Trevor Coons doubled, singled twice and drove in two rus to lead S-N-S batters. Coons also plated his team's final run after he singled and scored on Chris Koscis' sacrifice fly.
In the top of the fifth inning, with S-N-S up 2-1, Justin Foster walked, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Gazzola's errant pickoff attempt to put Border City Castings on the board.
Gazzola also earned the victory when S-N-S handled Beamsville 7-1 for the majors' second win in as many starts.
He pitched five innings of two-hit ball, striking out eight, before being relieved by Trevor Coons, who didn't allowing a hit over the final two winnings, registering four K's.
Jeff Perin doubled twice, and Nathan O'Neill collected two singles. In the next game, the Mustangs blanked the Falcons 10-0 to complete a four-game sweep of the round robin and gain home-field advantage in the best-of-three finals that begin next Friday.
Blake Weston, Dylan Niece and Koscis took turns on the mound for the shutout.
Coons, Perin, Weston, Koscis and Niece led Welland with two hits apiece.
