Mustangs Win Tourney With Only 11 Players
Sports - Tuesday, July 25, 2006 @ 09:00
Investing time in practice doing the little things right returned big dividends for the Welland Harpwood's Trophies Mustangs at the midget baseball tournament in Guelph.
Jon Hiller drove in teammate Gregg Sagloski in the bottom of the seventh inning with a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt to give the Mustangs a 6-5 victory over the host team and the tournament title.
Guelph plated two runs in the top of the inning to set the stage for the Welland comeback.
Hiller also earned the victory on the hill for the Mustangs. He allowed five runs on six hits while striking out five in the complete-game win.
Drew Pettit paced Welland at the plate in the final with a double and a single.
Adam Crumb and Will Mathieson combined for the shutout as the Mustangs opened the round-robin portion of the tournament with a 9-0 defeat of Georgetown. Hiller had two singles, while Justin Young, Dan Cavasion and Zach Fisher collected doubles.
Hiller smacked two triples and Pettit doubled twice as Welland blanked Pickering 12-0. Hiller and Mathieson shared pitching duties. Facing a must-win game in order to clinch a berth in the semifinals, the Mustangs received solid pitching from Young, who allowed only one run in four innings, and bantam callup Keane Sagloski in a 10-3 defeat of the London Eager Beavers.
Cavasin led Welland with a double and a single, while Mathieson and Hiller collected two hits apiece.
In the semifinal against Stoney Creek, the Mustangs scored twice in each of the first two innings and never looked back on their way to a 6-4 victory and a berth in the final.
Adam Crumb allowed four runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings to earn the win and also struck out four. Mathieson picked up the save after limiting Stoney Creek to two hits over the final 2 2/3 innings.
Gregg Sagloski tripled and singled, while Mathieson and Colton Hrcak each singled twice.
Welland went 5-0 at the tournamment to win it all despite fielding only 10 midget players and one bantam. With only four pitchers, Mustangs head coach Rick Young was forced to shorten outings for his hurlers and win by "committee" to ensure the team had fresh arms for the next game.

Peewee Hurler's No-hitter Gives Welland Gold Medal
Gazzola nearly perfect as Mustangs win Quebec tournament
Sports - Monday, July 24, 2006 @ 09:00
Randy Gazzola hurled a no-hitter against the host team in an 11-0 final to give the Welland S-N-S Pavement Maintenance the major peewee championship at a Baseball Quebec tournament in Gatineau.
Gazzola was nearly perfect in the mercy-rule victory; the only Gatineau runner reached base on an error.
Nathan O'Neill's double and Garrett Russell's triple highlighted a five-run offensive outburst for the Mustangs in the bottom of the first inning. Welland padded its lead to seven in the third when O'Neill smacked another three-bagger, putting the game out of the reach an inning later on Trevor Coons' three-run triple.
Coons, who went on to be named the top hitter at the tournament, enjoyed a 3-for-3 performance at the plate as the Mustangs tripled the host Braves 9-3 in the opener.
He also was the winning pitcher after allowing three runs on four hits and striking out four before giving the ball to Gazzola, who pitched a three-hitter while fanning five the rest of the way. Dylan Niece led Welland batters with multiple-base hits with two doubles, and Emily Caldwell singled twice.
Blake Weston and Chris Koscis combined to pitch a seven-hitter in a 9-3 victory over Alymer, Que., Mariners that featured Justin Lafontaine pacing Welland at the plate with two hits, including a double.
Niece smacked three doubles, Coons had two hits, while O'Neill and Weston both belted triples in a 12-0 mercy-rule win over the Draveurs, Que., Red Sox. Russell and Perin shared pitching duties to earn the shutout.
Perin, Gazzola and Russell each stole home in the first two innings as the Mustangs galloped to a 12-3 victory over the Montreal A's in the semifinals. Perin went 3-for-3 to lead the Welland hit parade, while Russell, Gazzola and O'Neill chipped in with two hits apiece.
Coons surrendered one run on six hits in three innings of work to earn the victory. Koscis, who allowed two runs on four hits in two innings, and Russell, who threw a perfect sixth inning, also saw action on the mound for the Mustangs.
