if you lift while dieting, you're body wont have enough calories to build muscle. So you wont get any bigger. Doing low rep/high intensity sets increases muscle hardness, which can help give a more toned look. Also, be sure that youre protein intake is adequate and from clean sources(i.e. not fried or processed foods) Just remeber to not overtrain because that will make you loose muscle, and look less toned.
