 | | Hey, let's go to Chattanooga via Israel! |
| |
First Model UN Team at Waverly Central High School
In the fall of 1998 a new academic team was started at Waverly Central, Model United Nations. Upon the urging of Samar Ali the team began with just ten members. Those included Samar Ali, Kim Tester, Joel Liggins, Ambra Bradley, Sarah Nowlin, Melissa Spann, Heather Willis, Patrick Compau, Ross Lucas, and Brooke Crawford. This group had no clue what they were in for, neither did their sponsor/faculty advisor Andrew Daniels. Everyone felt that since it was Samar's idea to get the group started a great nation to represent at Chattanooga's SHSMUN was Israel. This was due to the fact of Samar's Palestinian heritage. The team did suprisingly well at the conference and all went great. Word spread fast and other students at the school wanted to get involved and it was decided that another conference should be attended. The next conference was at Rhodes College. Thus started Waverly MUN.
The first time Waverly Attended Rhodes College
The second conference took place in February of 1999. The group had added a few members. They included Sarah Standfest, Sarah Sonday, Brandon Davis, Jeff Binkley, Jacob Frady, Daniel Alexander, Melissa Liggins, Allen Ralph, Amelia Hooper, and Meredith McCoy. With so many new people the MSMUN conference had another large learning curve for the new team members. In addition to Israel WCHS represented two more Middle-Eastern nations; Kuwait and Syria. The veterans that had attended the Chattanooga conference shined brightly. Samar Ali, Patrick Compau, and Ross Lucas did so well in their committees that they were recognized with awards.

Chattanooga - The Second Year
The second time WCHS attended Southeastern High School Model United Nations in Chattanooga they were more prepared and a little more experienced. Mr. Daniels had managed to have a class added to the curriculum offerings at WCHS. This new course was Modern History and it allowed for more structured training and preparation of the Model UN students before attending any conferences. Through this course offering new students had joined the group Tim Turner, Gabe Wilson, Ann Wiles, and Ashlee Arnold. These students still were a little perplexed with what exactly was going to happen at the conference. However, it only took a short period of time before they were up to speed. Even though they were a more experienced group and prepared themselves better than the previous year there was not an outstanding showing for WCHS Model UN at the 1999 SHSMUN. The rules were about to change.
Waverly Model UN Makes the Podium at 2000 MSMUN
After their disappointing showing at the Fall's SHSMUN in Chattanooga Waverly decided some things were going to change before they attended Rhodes that winter. The only person added to the team was Angela Piunti and the learning curve was steep for her, but she came out doing well. WCHS decided that more time was going to be spent on three main areas in preparation for MSMUN. These included: resolution writing through the critiquing of each other, developing questioning abilities, and caucusing skills. These were accompanied by the decision to group all of the more experienced delegates together on the same delegation. That delegation was Kazakhstan. The delegation that consisted of Ross Lucas, Patrick Compau, Melissa Liggins, Sarah Sonday, and Daniel Alexander were able to put their experience to good use and finish second in the overall delegation awards. Individual awards were also received by Ross Lucas, Patrick Compau, and Daniel Alexander. The Waverly Central Model UN had reached a milestone in only their fourth conference.
Waverly Model UN Rebuilds Before SHSMUN
Dateline October 28, 2000
After an impressive 1999-2000 school year with the WCHSMUN group many expected great things for the team at this years Southeastern High School Model United Nations. However, the truth of the matter was that most of the team had graduated last year and most of those involved were new to Model UN. Of course, this meant that there would be a period of growing up at their first conference. Everyone was looking to the veterans of previous MUN experiences for leadership and it was found in Daniel Alexander. Daniel represented the nation of Algeria at the 2000 SHSMUN on the Disarmament Committee and also served as the head delegate for the North African nation.
Other Model UN team members included:
Melissa Liggins
Alan Epley
Laura McGuire
Brandon Davis
Jeff Binkley
Casie Curtis
Junie Jones
Melanie Lammers
Jeremy Langston
Lesley Littrell
Matt McMillan
John Park
Jennifer Reid
Rebecca Schillinger
Scott Whitson
These delegates made up the Model UN group from WCHS. They performed well, but the lack of experience was evident with many. The majority had never been to a conference before and had to learn how it worked, because as Coach Daniels says: "There is no way to simulate the Model UN conference experience in the classroom." There was only one award for the Waverly group at SHSMUN 2000, and that was Honorable Mention for Daniel Alexander's representation of Algeria on the Disarmament Committee. The team did show improvement over the conference weekend and looked forward to Rhodes in February.
Mali Delegation wins 2001 Rhodes MSMUN

Dateline February 10, 2001
In the organization's third year the WCHS Model UN Team was able to come home victorious from this weekend's conference. Last year the team was able to come away with a second place delegation award. When asked about the future of Waverly Model UN, Andy Daniels (Advisor) stated "For only the third year of team competing, I was extremely pleased with our performance. The next goal for our group must be to place two delegations in the top finishers of the next conference." And that next conference will be coming soon. Over Spring Break the Waverly Model UN group will be traveling to the University of Tennessee to compete in UTHSMUN for the first time. An "ALL STAR" group will be attending representing the countries of Mali and Malaysia. The future looks bright.
*ALL STAR* Delegation Named for UTHSMUN
Dateline March 13, 2001
The Waverly Central Model UN decided to add a third trip this year to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville to attend the University of Tennessee High School Model UN. This decision was made after the outstanding performance that Waverly had in February at the MSMUN Conference at Rhodes College where they won the Best Overall Delegation Award.
With a limited budget there was no possible way for all the WCHS delegates to go, so an "All Star" group of nine has been chosen to represent the school at UTHSMUN.
Those chosen include the following students:
Representing the Country of MALI
Daniel Alexander (Disarmament Committee)
Laura McGuire (Environment Committee)
Lesley Littrell (Social Humanitarian Committee)
Alan Epley (Economic and Finance Committee)
Representing the Country of MALAYSIA
Matt McMillan (Security Council)
Junie Jones (Social Humanitarian Committee)
Brandon Davis (Economic and Finance Committee)
Jeremy Langston (Environment Committee)
Scott Whitson (Disarmament Committee)
For each one of these delegates this is at least thier third conference to attend. While others like Alexander and Davis have been to over a half a dozen conferences. Big things are expected from all of those involved. This is not a trip to catch up on UT athletics or any other fanciful things. These students are giving up their Spring Break to compete and win awards at UTHSMUN.
Individual awards were give to three delegates at the Rhodes Conference in February and "BIG" things are expected from this group. Epley won the Outstanding Delegate award in his committee, while Alexander and Littrell got Second Place awards in thier committees. This means that three of the four Mali delegates have been heavily decorated at other conferences. Some might think the deck is stacked and truthfully, it is.

Oops.... We Did It Again, Mali Gets Best Delegation Award
Dateline 3-20-01
Waverly Central Model United Nations was able to continue their winning ways at the University of Tennessee High School Model United Nations in Knoxville this past weekend. Waverly's Mali delegation captured top honors receiving "Best Overall Delegation." Individual honors went to Mali's Daniel Alexander (Disarmament Committee), Alan Epley (Economic and Finance Committee), and Lesley Littrell (Social Humanitarian Committee). Each one of these Mali delegates ended up placing in the top three in their respective committees.
The performance of both Waverly delegations (Mali and Malaysia) were outstanding. The overall performance and awards was even sweeter when one looks at the competition. There were seven total schools attending the conference, many of which are traditional Model UN powerhouses. These schools included Charleston Catholic School from West Virginia, Bryan Station Magnet School from Kentucky, Both Soddy Daisy and Rockwood High Schools brought their gifted program students, Clinton High School, and Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences. Both Clinton and CSAS have sent numerous delegates to "Nationals" in New York over the past years.
When asked about the WCHS performance, Andrew Daniels the Advisor stated: "I knew when our students were willing to give up their Spring Break to attend the conference we would do well. I couldn't be more pleased." With the recent victories there has been a lot of talk in the halls of WCHS about Model UN and the word "Dynasty" has been mentioned in some circles. However, there are a ton of seniors that will be sorely missed, but the tradition will continue and Waverly Model UN can only build on their winning ways. Upcoming events include tryouts some time in May where the best and the brightest Waverly has to offer will fight for the few relished spots and the announcement of this year's Hall of Fame inductees. More information on both topics will be forthcoming soon.
2001 Hall of Fame Induction Announcement Scheduled
Sunday, May 29 will be a day that lives in infamy for a lucky few. For that is the day that Waverly Model United Nations Advisors and Staff announce the newest inductees into the "Hall of Fame." When asked about the candidates the only thing Coach Daniels would say was, "There are a number of outstanding seniors this year and they have all done a magnificent job. This decision will be a difficult one." Both the school and community waits in anticipation of this announcement, especially after the start-up phase is over at WCHS for Model UN. After two victories this year at different ends of the state, many are looking for great things for the future. Of course, the inductees into the "Hall of Fame" will have been instrumental in the start of the "Dynasty," as some have called it.
Rotarians Aide In Model UN Endeavor
Dateline: November 28, 2001
The Waverly Rotary Club invited advisor Andrew Daniels and Lesley Littrell to speak at their weekly luncheon today, Wednesday, November 28. Daniels told the Rotarians about Waverly Central High School's Model UN Team, while Littrell told about the aforementioned organization from the student perspective.
Mr. Daniels pointed out that WCHS Model UN was founded by one of the Rotary's own children; Samar Ali. A detail of the assignments of a Model UN delegate were briefly described along with the issues that have been brought to the forefront after the September 11 tragedy. It was pointed out that the MUNers have been dealing with such topics over the past few years.
The main point of the presentation was to describe the benefits of Model UN to three different areas: Student, School, and Community. Littrell pointed out that MUN has helped her make life decisions that include further study of international affairs at the college level. After the presentation the Waverly Model UN Team was blessed with a donation of $500.00 from the Rotarians to aid in the expenses of attending three conferences across the Mid South and Southeast.
WCHS Model UN Adds Another One to the Trophy Case
Dateline: February 4, 2002
The Model United Nations Team from Waverly Central High School had an outstanding performance this past weekend at the Mid-South Model United Nations at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. Waverly represented the countries of Nicaragua and Algeria. Out of eight committees at the conference, Waverly had delegates at the top of two of them. They included: Lesley Littrell (Algeria) *Best Delegate* Economic and Finance Committee and Rebecca Schillinger (Algeria) *Honorable Mention* AD HOC Working Group on Disease Control.
As far as team awards went, Waverly's Algeria delegation received 2nd Place Overall Delegation out of over forty-five delegations. This makes the third year in a row that Waverly has placed in the top two at the Rhodes Conference. The Algeria Delegation consisted of Lesley Littrell, Chartice Coleman, Caleb Rolin, Nathan Davis, Rebecca Schillinger, and Amber De More.
When reached for comment the WCHS advisor and coach, Andrew Daniels, stated: "I could not be prouder of this group of delegates. Especially, when you consider that not a single one of them was in the General Assembly at the MSMUN Conference last year." Many look for the Waverly team to continue its successful ways at their next conference, which is the UTHSMUN in March. This was another conference Waverly was able to win last year. Everyone should be looking for great things from this group in the future.

This past month two Waverly Central High School Model Un Alums were elected to Student Government Association offices at Vanderbilt University. These were Samar Ali who won the office of President and Ross Lucas who now serves as Vice-President. Each of these fine young people were very instrumental in not only getting Model UN started in Waverly, they also were able to start that winning tradition that WCHSMUN is now known for.
Samar and Ross are each members of the WCHSMUN Hall of Fame. "I know that this will just be one in a long list of achievements for both of these individuals." stated their former advisor, Andrew Daniels.

There were three delegates that received individual honors. These included: Amber DeMore, Lesley Littrell, and Rebecca Schillinger. Each of these delegates received Honorable Mention Awards (which places them in the top three) for their representation of Algeria in their respective committees. Advisor Daniels stated, "I was very pleased with the whole group's performance. For the first time we had every single Waverly delegate get up in front of the GA. That was great." The conference was also a sad moment for everyone, because they realized that this will be the Seniors last conference. Seniors include: Amber DeMore, Lesley Littrell, and Jesse Toland. "They will definitely be missed, but the future still looks bright for Waverly MUN with seven returners to next year's team." Daniels stated.

Individual awards for Lesley were many as she served as the Social Humanitarian expert her Junior Year and moved to the Economics and Finance Committee her Senior Year. UTHSMUN was the site of Lesley's first individual honor when she placed in the top three of her respective committee. Waverly Central's MUN Group Experience a Week of Culture
 | | | | Chris and Rhendi Find Out What Diwali Is |
A South African native spoke to Waverly Central's delegations of Swaziland, Lesotho, and South Africa on Monday, November 4, 2002. The group was lucky enough to be able to question a native of their respective delegations face-to-face. Peter Van Vuuren was nice enough to come to Waverly to talk to the South Africa, Lesotho, and Swaziland Delegations and then answer any questions they might have. There was many items and various topics that were brought up. Some of these included: HIV and AIDS, shantytowns, technology, wildlife, education, and apartheid. Peter is an accoutant in Nashville that first came to the States to play rugby at Middle Tennesee State University and has since been named a Rugby All-American.
The week was topped off on Saturday when Waverly's Model UN group along with the Humphreys County STARS group attended Vanderbilt University's Leadership and Multicultural Symposium. The Student Government Association at Vanderbilt, which is headed by former WCHS Model UNers Samar Ali (President) and Ross Lucas (Vice President), was nice enough to invite Waverly Central's group up for a campus tour, a dinner of indigenous Indian cuisine, a leadership development workshop, and multicultural education. The evening was ended by a wonderful event presented by Vandy's South Asian Student Association called Diwali. The Waverly group got to see native dances, cultural events, and hear wonderful Southern Asian traditional music.
The WCHS Model UN Advisor, Andrew Daniels told this reporter that: "We are fortunate to have so many of our alumni that are, not only in leadership positions around us, but that are willing to give so much back to the group. These experiences are helping to take our team to the next level."

Waverly has Outstanding Performance at SHSMUN
Waverly Central High School attended the 2002 Southeastern High School Model United Nations this past weekend. Overall, the group did better than any group has done in the past. Every single delegate got up in GA and spoke, made motions, asked questions, etc... Coach Daniels stated: "Our South Africa delegation was terrific. We expected to place in the top three. However, we did not. Everyone really tried and once you consider that half of our group had never done it before, our being in contention was amazing."
Individual honors and awards went to Ginger Shupe (first timer) in Ad Hoc Commission on the Status of Women received Honorable Mention for South Africa. Nathan Davis was selected by the staff to be a Vice President for next years conference. Of course, this means he will chair an entire committee. He is the first from our school to receive such an honor. This is great for him, but kind of bad for us since he will not be able to compete with us next year.
Those attending the conference included: Chartice Coleman - Legal, Nathan Davis - Special Political, Chris James - Social and Humanitarian, David Epley - Environmental, Ginger Shupe - Ad Hoc, Women's Issues, Shawn Curtis - Economics and Finance, Jeff Lindsey - Disarmament, Caleb Rolin - Legal, Jamie Knight - Disarmament, Rhendi Grenwell - Social and Humanitarian.
Great things can be expected from this group at the next competition at Rhodes College in February where they will be representing the same countries.

Waverly Learns More About Radical Islam
Waverly Central High School Model UN attended the University of Tennessee-Martin on Monday, February 3, 2003 to listen to author and activist, Hali Jilani, as she gave a speech entitled From Kabul to Baghdad: The Rise of Radical Islam.
Hali Jilani is Chair of the Asian Affairs Task Force of the United Nations Association. Her work regularly takes her to her native Afghanistan, Pakistan, and neighboring countries to research issues of human rights, health care, education and democracy. The plight of women and refugees and the landmine issue are among her chief concerns. Ms. Jilani is a counterterrorism consultant for the U.S. Department of Justice and consults with the Department of Defense and U.S. Congress. A self-described political doer, Ms. Jilani left medical school in 1988 to provide medical assistance to Afghanis fighting against the Soviet Union. She later worked with the Marshall Legacy Institute to promote better medical care in third world countries and worked with other private groups on issues ranging from womens , childrens, and animals rights to the wars in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Kosovo.
This trip included both Fresmen and Varsity delegates. Originally, seventeen delegates were slated to attend the evenings events, but the flu epidemic brought the number to just six. All of those attending got to hear about Iraq and Kashmir, along with the status of women in all of the Muslim world. The discussion brought up Honor Killings, torture, Palestine, the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden, Iran, Jordan, landmines, and the United Nations, to name a few. Hali Jilani stated that "Radical Islam" was misleading and that those that were considered "Radicals" were not and should not be viewed as Muslims. These groups have their own agenda and they use the Koran to try and give their beleifs legitimacy. However, the Koran does not teach the actions of these groups that are responsible for the 9-11 attacks and others. All of those that attended benefitted greatly from the experience.

Waverly Model UN has Another Outstanding Performance
This past weekend Waverly Central High School traveled to Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee to capture one more for the trophy case. The countries they represented were South Africa, Lesotho, and Swaziland. The varsity delegation of South Africa was able to capture Second Place in the Overall Delegation Awards. The Best Overall Delegation was Memphis, White Station High School's Argentina delegation that had just returned from Yale University's Model UN the previous weekend. Third Place Delegation was Bartlett High School's Spain delegation. Bartlett has always been a traditional MUN powerhouse. There was a total of Fifty-five (55) countries represented at the conference from fifteen (15) schools, making it the largest MSMUN ever. With all of these factors considered, Waverly had an outstanding showing in the Mid-South.
Several of the Waverly group received individual awards. Those included: Honorable Mention - NATHAN DAVIS, Economic and Social Council, South Africa; Honorable Mention - CHARTICE COLEMAN, Special Political and Decolonization Committee, South Africa; Honorable Mention - JEFF LINDSEY, Disarmament and International Security Committee, South Africa; Verbal Commendation - GINGER SHUPE, Working Group on AIDS, South Africa; Verbal Commendation - REBECCA SCHILLINGER, Working Group on Global Warming, South Africa.
The conference also marked another first for WCHS Model UN. That was an entire Freshmen delegation in attendance. This delegation of Swaziland impressed many and great things can be expected in the future from these future award winners. "I could not believe how well they performed. Each and every one of them got up and spoke in General Assembly. We were all very pleased." The other event of mention for the weekend was SNOW! The conference was shortened by over an hour when the snow would not stop. However, the delegates all made it back to a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, there to welcome them at the school, before the roads got too bad.
The next conference for the Varsity will be in Knoxville on February 28 and the Freshmen will travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky on March 14. The future is bright for Waverly Central High School Model United Nations.

WCHS Model UN Has Strong Showing
Waverly Central's varsity delegation finished off their year this past weekend at the University of Tennessee High School Model United Nations in Knoxville. They represented the countires of Mali and Algeria. Both of these delegations performed well. It was beleived by many that Mali was in contention for an overall delegation award but finished just out of the top two awarded spots. Individual awards were received by Jeff Lindsey, Best Delegate in the Legal Committee; Chartice Coleman, Honorable Mention in the Social and Humanitarian Committee; Ginger Shupe, Honorable Mention in the Disarmament Committee. All of the delegates receiving individual recognition represented Mali.
The Conference was dominated by the Iraqi delegation from Clinton High School that received both Best Overall Delegation and received individual recognition in Four committees. Two of this delegation's members will be attending the National MUN in New York this Spring. Waverly would like to wish them the best of luck.
This conference marked the end of many Seniors career with high school Model UN at Waverly Central. These included: Chartice Coleman, Rhendi Greenwell, and Ginger Shupe. Each of these fine young people will be sorely missed. When asked about the Seniors their advisor, Andy Daniels, stated: "They really helped us continue the strong tradition of Model United Nations at Waverly Central High School."
This is not the end of the year for MUN activities in Waverly though. The Freshmen group will be attending the Western Kentucky University Model United Nations Conference in Bowling Green, Kentucky on March 14 and tryouts for next year's varsity team will be in May. There is also the much anticipated Hall of Fame induction that will come later in the Spring. The dates for tryouts and Hall of Fame nominees will be announced by the Waverly Central High School Model United Nations Alumni Council and Board of Directors later this month.

Freshmen Have Terrific Performance
They represented France, they had a veto, and man, they did great. For the first time ever Waverly Central High School Model United Nations took a delegation composed entirely of Freshmen to a MUN conference. The only award received was by Mallory Phillips who received "Best Delegate - Social and Humanitarian Committee." However, this does not mean that the group did poorly. For a group that only had one conference under their belt the showing was great. Many of the delegates in committee were either upper classmen or college students and this did not deter the WCHS Freshmen. Each delegate took an active role in committee and did not act in the least bit intimidated, but instead led the debate in many instances. Their advisor Coach Daniels said: "The future of MUN looks bright at WCHS and I cannot say enough good things about this group. They really put a lot of hard work and thought into this conference and they deserve many accolades." The French delegation consisted of Mallory Phillips, Lindsay Dycus, Billi Jo Willhite, Corey Bradley, and Clay Wallace.
This marks the end of the competitive circuit this year. The date for tryouts for next year's squad will be announced in the coming week and with many Varsity members returning the competition for a spot on next year's group will be intense. Of cours, the Varsity team is coming off of an outstanding showing at the University of Tennessee's MUN Conference just a couple of weeks back, where they finished third.

Hall of Fame Inductees Announced
The following people were named to the Waverly Central High School Model United Nations Hall of Fame on May13, 2003 by the Waverly Central High School Model United Nations Alumni Council and the Board of Directors: Chartice Coleman (2001-2003) and Ginger Shupe (2002-2003).
Chartice was able to help the Waverly Model UN program excell to another level of excellence. Chartice received individual awards her senior year at two conferences. She was able to help her delegation receive other numerous team awrds. These included Second Place Overall Delegation 2003 MSMUN, Second Place Overall Delegation 2002 UTHSMUN, Second Place Overall Delegation 2002 MSMUN. Chartice played a pivotal role in each one of these team awards.
Chartice plans on attending college in Lousiana after graduation and pursuing a degree in nursing.
The evidence was there from the beginning that Ginger was an outstanding delegate. She was only able to participate in Model UN her senior year. She attended three conferences and received individual awards at each of them. A feat that has never been accomplished by any other Model UNer at WCHS. Ginger also was part of the delegation of South Africa at the 2003 MSMUN that received Second Place Overall Delegation honors. Ginger also served on three different committees while she was a delegate. These were Disarmament, Working Group on AIDS, and the Ad Hoc Commission on the Status of Women.
Ginger plans on attending George Washington University where she will serve in their Naval ROTC program and pursue a degree in medicine. She plans on becoming a surgeon in the United States Navy.
