What Is MUN |
|
What is Model United Nations?
Model United Nations is an organization that encourages student
involvement in world affairs and global issues. Waverly Central High
School recognizes the importance of Model UN in developing the truly
"Globally Aware" student. There are so many influences that directly
effect our lives today in this "Global Village" and Model UN allows
students to become aware of these influences.
Through involvement in Model United Nations, a team of eager students
learn compromise, respect for cultural diversity and customs,
self-motivation, working as a team member, time management, diplomacy,
and pride in ones accomplishments. Everyone agrees that these are all
strengths that can greatly benefit future leaders of the community.
Waverly Central High School Model United Nations participates in the
Southeastern High School Model United Nations Conference in Chattanooga,
the Mid-South Model United Nations at Rhodes College in Memphis, and the
University of Tennessee High School Model United Nations in Knoxville.
Each of these are programs involving high school students in the process
of global conflict resolution, international diplomacy, and
multi-cultural collaboration. In preparation for the conference,
students are assigned a specific country to represent, and with this
nations foreign policy in mind, write resolutions confronting current
world issues, providing a plan of action for preventing or solving this
problem. Many hours of research and preparation are involved before the
students ever reach the conference itself. However, through intense
debate, and diplomatic compromise in committee and General Assembly,
this hard work pays off.
Students have to work hard and are always excited about having
opportunities to interact with students from many states. Model United
Nations provides a benefit for students especially in preparing for
college.
