WCHS... Strong Showing at the University of Tennessee
Waverly Central's MUN group had another great conference this past weekend in Knoxville. The team was not able to achieve a third Best Delegation award in a row, but the Angola delegation was able to finish in second place overall. The first place delegation was fielded by Girls Prepatory School (GPS) of Chattanooga that represented Belarus. "GPS had a great group that really put it all together," WCHS advisor Andy Daniels stated.
Waverly's group was outstanding as well. All six of the Angola delegates received individual awards. Mallory Phillips, Becky Ojeda, Patty Ojeda, Corey Bradley, and Derick Smith all received honorable mention in their respective committees and Shawn Curtis achieved the coveted prize of Best Delegate in the prestigious Security Council. Shawn is the only senior and he will surely be missed next year.
This marks the end to another wonderful year in Model UN for WCHS. There were alot of firsts including finishing in the top two at all three conferences ateended this year, winning SHSMUN, having all delegates in one delegation receive individual awards, and having a Security Council Best Delegate. It is hard to believe, but this group looks to achieve even greater things next year.

Waverly Success Continues
For the second time this academic year Waverly Central's Model UN team finished atop the heap at a regional conference. Rhodes College in Memphis was the setting for this year's Mid-South Model United Nations Conference. Sixteen schools representing near fifty different countries were in attendance at the '05 MSMUN from three states.

Waverly's Romania delegation composed of Shawn Curtis, Mallory Phillips, Lindsay Dycus, Corey Badley, Becky Ojeda, Patty Ojeda, and Haley Capel finished in first place beating out all types of private and public schools. Individual awards were won by the following delegates:
Derick Smith - BENIN, Best Delegate in Social and Humanitarian
Mallory Phillips - ROMANIA, Best Delegate in WG 1 (Refugees and IDPs)
Patty Ojeda - ROMANIA, Best Delegate Paper in WG 2 (Child Soldiers)
Andy Couch - BENIN, Best Position Paper in Security Council
Patty Ojeda - ROMANIA, Best Position Paper in WG 2 (Child Soldiers)
Lindsay Dycus - ROMANIA, Honorable Mention in Social and Humanitarian
Shawn Curtis - ROMANIA, Honorable Mention in Special Political.

"The entire lot of them did great. Every one of the thirteen we took contributed to this team victory," said Advisor Andy Daniels. The WCHS squad will be looking for an unprecedented third Best Delegation award in one year at the end of this month as they travel to East Tennessee and compete in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee High School Model UN. Best of luck to the team.

Waverly Central Reaches Pinnacle
SHSMUN 04 2
Waverly Central High School Model United Nations has reached and attained the next level of greatness. This past weekend they won Best Overall Delegation at the Southeastern High School Model United Nations in Chattanooga. While they have won many conferences in the past and attained many individual awards none have been as sweet as this. SHSMUN is the premier conference in the Southeastern United States where over sixteen of the top parochial, public, private, and magnet schools come to compete each year.
WCHS represented the nation of Angola this year at the fifty delegation conference. The other top nations this year were Norway from Clinton High School that finished second and Pakistan from Bartlett High School that placed third. Angola was comprised of nine delegates that included Shawn Curtis, Mallory Phillips, Corey Bradley, Lindsay Dycus, Derek Smith, Becky Ojeda, Patty Ojeda, Haley Capel, and Andy Couch. Seven of these delegates received individual awards.

These included:
    1. Derek Smith; Best Delegate, UNESCO
    2. Mallory Phillips;
          a. Honorable Mention, UNEP
          b. All Star Delegate - Trip to NHSMUN
    3. Corey Bradley; Honorable Mention, WHO
    4. Lindsay Dycus;
          a. Honorable Mention, SOC HUM
          b. Selected as Vice President for 2005 SHSMUN
          c. Third Place Best Overall Delegate
    5. Shawn Curtis; Honorable Mention, SPEC POL
    6. Becky Ojeda; Honorable Mention, ECO FIN
    7. Patty Ojeda; Honorable Mention, LEGAL

The advisors for the group were very pleased with the outcome. Head Advisor Andy Daniels said: "I was pleased as punch! The best thing is this bodes well for the future of our program, because Shawn is the only senior. I knew we would do well, but this exceeded even my expectations with such a young group." The one thing that Daniels attributed to the recent strength of their program was the development of a freshmen program over the past couple of years.
WCHS plans on attending both MSMUN in Memphis and UTHSMUN in Knoxville later this year. This group has set the bar even higher for future MUN groups at Waverly Central. Great Job!

WCHS MUN has "Great Expectations," just like Dickens, for next year. There are only two people on the Varsity team that have not had previous experience as a MUN delegate. Also, with the president of the student body as the only senior, there should be plenty of leadership. Four of the 04-05 delegates have received individual awards as well. When reached for comment, Andy Daniels, WCHS MUN advisor said: "This is the strongest group we have ever had going into a new year."

Waverly Central Continues Winning Ways at MSMUN
Waverly Central High School took fifteen delegates to the Mid-South Model United Nations at Rhodes College in Memphis this past weekend and for the fifth straight year they received an overall delegation award in the top two. The delegation of Poland was named the MSMUN First Place Best Overall Delegation. WCHS took two other delegations to the conference. They included Moldova and the freshmen delegation of Azerbaijan. MSMUN was larger than ever this year, with forty-six delegations competing from more than twelve schools in three different states.
Those that received individual awards included:
Caleb Rolin (POLAND)      Best Delegate       Disarmament
Lindsay Dycus (POLAND)    Best Delegate       Social and Humanitarian
Jeff Lindsey (POLAND)    Honorable Mention    Economics and Finance
Shawn Curtis (POLAND)    Honorable Mention    Special Political
Shawn Curtis (POLAND)    Best Position Paper Special Political
Mallory Phillips (POLAND) Best Working Paper   Infant Mortality Working Group
Corey Bradley (MOLDOVA)    Best Working Paper   Overpopulation Working Group
Waverly's MUN advisor Andy Daniels stated: "I could not have been more pleased the overall team effort at the conference. Poland would not have been able to do it without the help of the other delegations' efforts. This award recognizes the great efforts of all fifteen delegates." Daniels also noted that the freshmen squad really performed well. WCHS just started a "Frosh" squad last year and the benefits can already be seen. Three of the delegates that received individual awards were on last year's Freshmen Team.
The next conference that Waverly delegates will be participating in is the University of Tennessee High School Model UN in Knoxville at the end of this month. Will more awards lie in the foothills of the Smokies for WCHS? This reporter feels that awards are a "given" now at Waverly Central.

POLAND Delegation places Third Overall in Chattanooga
Waverly Central’s Model United Nations team traveled to Chattanooga on November 21st through the 24th, where they competed in the Southeastern High School Model United Nations (SHSMUN). The team represented the country of Poland and consisted of eight students that included: Corey Bradley, Shawn Curtis, Lindsay Dycus, Jeff Lindsey, Jordan Littrell, Mallory Phillips, Caleb Rolin, and Steven Stewart. Another Waverly student was at the conference as well; Nathan Davis served as the chair of the Economics and Finance Committee.
Five of the eight delegates received individual awards. They included: Mallory Phillips – Best Delegate, United Nations Environment Programme; Lindsay Dycus – Honorable Mention, World Health Organization; Jeff Lindsey – Honorable Mention, Disarmament and International Security Committee; Caleb Rolin – Honorable Mention, Legal Committee; and Steven Stewart – Honorable Mention, Economic and Finance Committee.
As a team, Poland received Third Place Delegation, overall out of forty-eight delegations. There were over fifteen schools at the competition from throughout the southeast, some as far away as West Virginia. WCHS Model UN advisor Andy Daniels stated, “This was our first time to place at this particular conference. It is one of the premier conferences, and we were all elated with our performance.” The group from Waverly proved themselves even more phenomenal when one considers that only three of their delegates had been to SHSMUN before.
The next competition for Waverly’s MUN group will be at Mid-South Model United Nations (MSMUN) at Rhodes College in Memphis the first weekend in February. WCHS has done extremely well at MSMUN in the past as well, finishing in the top two overall positions for the past four years. Daniels stated: “We are expecting even more great things out of this group.”

Waverly Central Achieves Success
Group
2001 SHSMUN Delegation
Dateline: November 20, 2001

The Waverly Central High School Model United Nations Team had a successful conference this past weekend in Chattanooga at the Southeastern High School Model United Nations. Only one delegate received an award, but others helped contribute to the achievement. Lesley Littrell in her second year attending the conference got Honorable Mention (2nd Place) accolades in the Social Humanitarian Committee for her representation of Algeria.
When reached for comment Daniels said: that "Awards are not the only mark of achievement." The Waverly group was very young and inexperienced in MUN, so many were not expecting much. Only one person had attended more than two conferences prior to this one and seven were first timers. The Waverly delegation did not let their inexperience hold them back. Each and every delegate took part in caucus, debate, and made their positions known in General Assembly. "We have never had a delegation that had this much overall participation in GA," Daniels stated. Another key fact that has to be mentioned is the addition of a new advisor. Chad Wyatt brings a diverse history and political science background to the team and helped play a critical role in their success.
Now that they have gotten their feet wet, WCHS Model UN is looking for even bigger and better things in February when they attend the Mid South Model United Nations Conference at Rhodes College.
