Late rally leads Bears to tourney title

A 34-point fourth quarter and hot shooting by juniors Justin Clark and Jon Ekey helped the Bears win their first tournament title in more than 10 years with a 93-89 victory against Olathe South in the Gardner-Edgerton/ Olathe South Tournament.

The Bears led 17-9 early but an 18-0 run helped South pull away on its way to a 50-37 halftime lead. The Bears went on a spurt after the break but Olathe South responded with a burst of its own to lead by as many as 17. Chrisman responded, however, and cut the lead to five going into the fourth quarter.

And, that is where Chrisman's full-court pressure defense started taking its toll and the two junior sharpshooters started making their mark.

Ekey made three 3-pointers in the quarter, making all three in a row and from the same spot on the court. Clark totaled 16 in the quarter, mixing up drives to the baskets with his own long-range shots.

Clark finished with 30 points and four 3-pointers, while Ekey added 19 points and five 3-pointers to go along with six rebounds.

Both players made the all-tournament team and Clark was named the tournament's Most Outsanding Player.

Senior Jason Brown (in his sixth varsity game) made his presence known inside, where he grabbed nine rebounds (six offensive) and also scored a career-hig 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 3-3 from the free throw line.

Junior Bobby Byrom added nine points, four steals and three assists.

The Bears next game is at home Tuesday, Dec. 11, against North Kansas City. The junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity will play after at approximately 7 p.m.

The win catapulted the Bears in into the tournament finals for the second year in a row, where the Bears will again meet up with Olathe South. South beat Chrisman in a thrilling overtime game last season.

The Bears hope to get revenge when the two teams meet at 8:45 tonight at Gardner-Edgerton High School.

Bears open tournament with win

The Bears and their run-and-gun offense opened the Olathe South/ Gardner-Edgerton Tournament with one of the hosts (Gardner/Edgerton) and in their gym, but the home-court advantage had no affect on Chrisman as it held on for a 96-91 victory Tuesday.

The Bears, behind a big second quarter from junior Jon Ekey, built a 20-point first half lead, but the Trailblazers fought back to get within one late. The Bears defense and free-throw shooting came through at the end, however, as the Bears evened their record (2-2).

Ekey and junior Justin Clark paced Chrisman with 19 points apiece, but Ekey's big second quarter help the Bears grab a stonghold on the lead. In the quarter, Ekey had four three-pointers and 14 of points in that quarter alone. For the game, Ekey also added four rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Clark had  his own first-half highlight moment as well, with a surprising break-away dunk under pressure that energized the Bears. Clark added three 3-pointers to go along with four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Junior Bobby Byrom was  also in double-digits with 14 points and two 3-pointers. Senior Mason McDaniels controlled the pace with six assists and three steals.

The Bears gave conference-favorite Liberty all its could handle in the team's first Suburban Big 7 Conference game of the year, but Chrisman's late flurry and comback bid fell short in a 89-85 defeat on Nov. 27.

The Bears Run-and-Gun attack kept the boys close in the first half, but the defense was not ther early in the second half as Liberty built a 71-52 lead. But, shots started falling and the defensive intensity pick up as the Bears cam all the way back to take a 84-83 lead.

The Chrisman boys started strong in their first game of the 2007-08 season, but a third quarter Fort Osage run powered the Indians past the Bears 93-82 on Tuesday.

The Bears built their lead to nine on several occasions in the first half and were leading 48-44 when they went into the locker room at halftime. The Bears went cold offensively and defensively to start the third quarter and a 19-0 Fort Osage run gave the Indians the lead for good.

Chrisman fought back in the fourth, showing the potential of its Run-and-Gun system, getting the lead to single digits in the final minutes but could get no closer.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, the William Chrisman boys' and girls' basketball teams hosted a youth basketball clinic for IYAA basketball coaches and players.

Chrisman Varsity and JV players and coaches worked with the young players, showed them some of their drills and also took them on a tour of the locker room and weight room to show the youth where they prepared for the season and each game.

The teams hope, with the clinic being a complete success, to hold another session next year.
