Wayne Waves Swim Team 2005

Registration Information

Who are the Wayne Waves?

The Wayne Waves Swim Team is the official Swim Team of the Township of Wayne.  Run through the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Summer Swim Program, the Wayne Waves is a competitive team.  This year, Jennifer Shea and Kristen Bondarenko will coach the Wayne Swim Team.  The swim team competes in two leagues, the Ramapo Hills and Lakeland Swim Conferences.  We are three-time Lakeland Swim Conference White Division Champions. The Wayne Waves is open to any Wayne resident between the ages of 5 and 18, and all swimmers must be members of one of the three Wayne Township Swim Facilities.  Although no team experience is required, swimmers must be able to swim at least 25 meters of freestyle and one other stroke.  First and foremost, the Wayne Waves Swim Team is a recreational activity through which children can learn the sport of competitive swimming.

What time commitments are required?

The Wayne Waves Swim Team runs from the middle of June to the middle of August.  Once school ends, practices take place during the day.  Meets begin on Friday, July 1, 2005.  We have two meets per week, one at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings and the other at 10:00 a.m. on Friday mornings.  These meets usually last approximately three hours, and take place at our lake (North Cove) or at the opposing team’s lake.  Practice is required to be allowed to swim in the meets.  Practice times will be determined based on the ability level of the swimmer.  In addition, swimmers will have the option of entering Lakeland Swim Conference Invitationals held on Saturday mornings.  There is a nominal fee for participation in these events (usually $1.50-2.00 per event), but these are completely optional.

What will be required of parents?

First and foremost, the Wayne Waves Swim Team is meant to foster the development of competitive swimmers.  Therefore, good sportsmanship will be required from both swimmers and parents.  Swimmers will be expected to attend practices and meets, and parents will help to ensure that swimmers are able to do so.  In addition, all families must work at least three (3) meets.  There is no way that meets can be run without parental support, and it is therefore required that all families help out.  You will have the opportunity to sign up for the meets of your choice.  If you choose to enter your child(ren) in invitationals, then you will be required to work them as well.

Who are Jennifer and Kristen?

Jennifer Shea will be the head coach of the Wayne Waves Swim Team for the second consecutive season. Before this, Jennifer was the assistant coach for two years and a lifeguard and swim lesson instructor at North Cove. She was a ten-year member of the Wayne Swim Team and grew up swimming on the team.  In addition, Jennifer is a former NCAA Division III basketball player at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. She currently teaches Kindergarten here in Wayne and coaches a traveling girls basketball team at the Wayne P.A.L. She is joined on the coaching staff by first year assistant coach Kristen Bondarenko. Although Kristen is new to the coaching staff, she brings a wealth of experience to the team. She is a ten year member of the team as well as a lifeguard and swim lesson teacher. She was a four year member of the Wayne Hills Varsity Swim Team. The coaches are looking forward to a fun and exciting season.

Is the Swim Team right for my child?

Once again, it is important to stress that the swim team requires no previous team experience.  All that is required is the ability to swim 25 meters of any two strokes, the desire to learn, and the willingness to participate in all events.  The coaches will work with the swimmers to develop endurance, confidence, and racing skills.  The Wayne Waves Swim Team is an opportunity to learn and develop swimming skills.  The Swim Team is a great way for children to meet others who share an interest in swimming, and many friendships have developed as a result of participation in the Wayne Swim Team program.

OK…what’s next?

To join the Wayne Waves Swim Team, all swimmers must be members of one of the three Wayne Township Swim Facilities (Preakness Pool, Kilroy Park/Toms Lake, or North Cove).  There is a ten-dollar registration fee, and parents must complete a registration form and medical form for each swimmer.  After school practices will begin on Monday, June 20, 2005 at North Cove Swim Lanes and will be every day of that week except for 6/23). All swimmers can practice from 5:00 -6:00 p.m. Attendance at every after-school practice is not mandatory, but it is suggested that you try to attend as many as possible.
