“Teamwork doesn't tolerate the inconvenience of distance.”

“The era of the rugged individual is giving way to the era of the team player.
Everyone is needed, but no one is necessary.”

“When a team outgrows individual performance and learns team confidence, excellence becomes a reality.”

…. These are the concepts that will pave our path to success this year!

Even though you are in the water by yourself, swimming is a TEAM sport. You are not successful, if the team is not successful. You must think of the team before thinking of yourself.

The following are the standards by which our team will be held. It is not negotiable. This is a Varsity sport, and the intention is to bring the sport- your sport- the recognition it deserves. In order to do that, some things need to change from years past. If you do not agree with them, I ask you to then please step down from the team now. I am looking for a team that is dedicated, and wants to win, not one that is complacent. Our team needs to understand that their individual actions affect others. You need to recognize that if you slack off and are not allowed to participate that YOU are letting down your teammates.

You have been provided with a schedule for the upcoming season. Although, it may change you are expected to be at EVERY meet. If you miss a meet- you sit a meet. If you miss the Championship- you will sit two additional meets. You are expected to be at EVERY practice. I understand that unforeseen things occur, in which you are allowed to miss 3 practices. On your FOURTH missed practice, you will be released from the team. This includes practices over Holiday break.

Club swimmers: You are expected to be at W.V. practices according to the schedule. Please note the calendar you were given. It states which practices you MUST attend. Remember, you are only allowed 3 missed practices.

Timeliness: We have very little time in the pool. Practices are a set time. You are expected to be at the pool, STRETCHED, and ready to go when it is time to begin. Do not be late!!! Excessive times being late to practice will NOT be tolerated. Just like at school, 4 tardies will equal one missed practice. A tardy is deemed as you not being in the pool when I am ready to go.

Awards: In the past MVP has primarily been Most Varsity Points. Since I am trying to instill a concept of TEAM, MVP will go back to what it initially stood for and what it means to every other Varsity sport. To me, an MVP is the Most Valuable Player to his team. That person doesn't have to be the team’s leading scorer or best swimmer, just the driving force behind the team's success.

Captains: Next year’s captains will be chosen on characteristics that I see. Just because someone is a senior or obtains the most points does not mean they will automatically be captain. The best captain has the best work ethic, is dependable, treats other team members with respect and can always be counted on to help the others, help the coach, and lead by example. Such a captain is only interested in furthering the success of the team, not in how much glory there is in being a captain.

Illnesses- It will not be held against you if you are ill. But what will be held against you is if YOU do not get word to me that you are home sick. Any time you will not be at practice or a meet I MUST know first thing in the morning. It is YOUR responsibility to get the message to me. Please call the athletic office 973-317-2211 and they will leave me a note. I can also be reached at lbudd@wayneschools.com.   If you leave school early due to illness, you must make sure I get notice ASAP. If I do not know of your absence, it is an unexcused absence and counts against you. If it is a meet, and I do not find out until the afternoon, you will sit the next meet. It is imperative that I know as soon as possible.

"Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit.” (Vince Lombardi) Let’s make this season a great one!
