Prep soccer: Overtime nail-biter: East's Turinetti finds back of net in double OT
Wausau Daily Herald
WESTON -- Lauren Turinetti got retribution for the Wausau East girls soccer team, as the Lumberjacks pulled out a 1-0 double-overtime win over D.C. Everest on Thursday night.
Turinetti's game-winning goal came at the 96:13 mark on a scrum in front of the net after an East corner kick.
Last season, D.C. Everest beat East 1-0 in regulation on a corner kick.
Whether it was the home-field advantage, or an eagerness ascribed to a big Wisconsin Valley Conference game, the Evergreens came out with some extra fire.
"In the first half, we had most of the offensive chances," Everest coach Lucas Kollross said. "One even went off the post. But as the game went on, we sort of lost that offensive spark."
East was able to hang on defensively long enough to come back in the second half with an added intensity.
"Everest came out really strong in the first half," East coach Ken Smith said. "In the second half, we had more of the possession. We played much better defensively."
Both coaches praised the defensive units for lasting the entire game.
By the end of the second overtime, it was just a matter of who was going be able to fight of fatigue and find the back of the net.
Everest freshman keeper Hannah Jasurda put in an incredible effort, until the ball squeaked in.
"Defensively, we played really, really well," Kollross said. "I thought we played our best game of the year."
The Wisconsin Valley Conference win was a big one for East after losing a hard-fought battle to Wisconsin Rapids on Monday.
"Every game in the Valley is going to be tough," Smith said. "It's pretty even for the most part, so games like these are going to happen a lot this year.
"It was a hard fought game -- it always is when you play them."

East hopes landmark soccer victory carries over

It all happened so fast for Wausau East girls soccer player Lauren Turinetti.
Teammate Mallory Gohl set the play in motion with a corner kick against the D.C. Everest defense Thursday night. The Lumberjacks got a shot off and it ricocheted right to Turinetti, who scored the game-winner at the 96:13 mark to snap a four-game losing streak against the Evergreens.
"I wasn't sure if it was going to go in," said Turinetti, a sophomore. "It was a wild shot and I got lucky. It was so in the heat of the moment that I don't even remember where I shot it from, but I was just so excited."
Ironically, Everest won last year's game against East when Jill Litrenta was in the right place at the right time on Mary Blemke's corner kick, though it occurred early in the second half.
East was the dominant program in town until Everest upset the then No. 1-seeded Lumberjacks in the WIAA Division 1 regional final in 2003 to take the crown. Everest has been in the top three of the Valley the last three years.
The last time the Lumberjacks defeated the Evergreens was 1-0 on Maggie Dudley's goal on April 24, 2003.
"To be able to get a win against that quality of team should give us a whole lot of confidence," East coach Ken Smith said. "In the Valley, everyone is pretty much even. This was a huge step for us."
The win was extra special for East senior goalie Martha Mohs, who finished with four saves. Mohs had her season end last year against Everest when the Evergreens' Ashley Munz collided with her April 20. Munz suffered a concussion and a thigh injury, while Mohs injured her left knee and was taken off the field on a stretcher and into an ambulance.
"I put a lot of pressure on myself (Thursday night) after not making it through the entire season last year," said Mohs, who said she still has thoughts about last year's collision. "I know we haven't beaten them in a long time. It was something we set as a team goal at the beginning of the season, and it was a personal goal of mine."
The Lumberjacks hope the win over the Evergreens will break them out of their .500 rut.
"I hope that this is something that will put us in the right direction because we have struggled in the past," Mohs said. "I think this victory has proven some things to ourselves, the town and to the rest of the conference. We are for real this year. Going .500 does get old."
