| Red and Black Team adds a title to its proud history WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2009 The Watertown Red and Black football team has been a source of pride for the city of Watertown and the north country for numerous years — 113 to be exact. Not only is the Red and Black America's oldest semipro football team; it is also a champion. The squad clinched its first Empire Football League Championship in 29 years with a 6-0 victory over the Plattsburgh North Stars at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds Saturday night. Community support and pride in the team were evidenced by the attendance Saturday — more than 3,000 fans watched the Red and Black capture its its first title since 1980. The Red and Black defense accomplished its seventh shutout of the season. Quarterback Brian Williams ran for 114 yards, including the game's only touchdown in the second quarter. Running back T.J. Williams rushed for 127 yards. Longtime head coach George Ashcraft, his staff and players are to be heartily congratulated for an outstanding season, in which they finished 11-1 and captured the coveted title. Football is a demanding game. Playing it well requires intense training, many practices, solid teamwork and sound strategy. Commitment and courage are needed on the part of each player. Love of the game, dedication of those running the team, community pride and tradition have kept the Watertown Red and Black going all these years. Now they can add the 2009 league championship to their storied history. |
