MAKING THE SAVE - 3

OK, you can do the T save and you are even lunging for the ball with two-hands, and quite effectively at that in some cases. But there is still something that has been bugging you since you decided that you want to be a goalie. You may have seen other goalies make a save and the ball just falls right in front of them. When you make a save, the ball is all over the place. How can you get the ball to land right in front of you???

This skill is a little more advanced even though it sounds easy. All you have to do is instead of your arms spread straight out to your sides, bend your elbows slightly, making a slight curve from fingertip to chest to other fingertip. Something that will help this is bending the wrist a little as well. This will help the arms be strong through the shot as it will engage the muscles in the arm so there is not bad recoil in your arms about the elbow while making the save.

This works for some people and not so well for others. Some people have the tendency to swing their arms into the save while others may bend their arms too much. If you bend the arms forward too much you open up more portions of the goal to shoot at. As a side note to this, if you have to reach far to make the save, do it with straight arms, not bent. Being able to control the save does you nothing if you can’t make the save in the first place.

This technique is a little more advanced and should really be worked on before implementing it into your game play. That’s all for now kids. More will come for the goalies so hang in there. Goaltending is tough, so don’t expect to pick up these skills in the time that you are receiving these e-mails. Take your time and work on the skills. Go at your own pace. The more shots you see, they better off you are. Play hard and remember…”if you touch you stop it.”
