MAKING THE SAVE - 2

OK, you can do the T-save. You are very effective with it. But sometimes the shots just come too hard. You have time to react to the shot, but you just can’t seem to control it all that well.

If this is the case, there are other things that you can do to help you stop those shots. Sure there are….use both hands. You’re the goalie after all, and you are the only one in the pool that is allowed to.

The two-handed save is a little more difficult, as it takes a lot of leg strength to elevate the body and a little more body coordination. It is important to note, that throughout all of the shots, you watch the ball right into your save. Doing this will tell you exactly where the ball is after you make the save.

With the two-handed save, again, get the legs and hands churning hard to give yourself that one last push. Come out to make the save as if you were going to stop the ball using the T save.

Should you see the ball going to your left side, and you can react fast enough, throw your right hand across your chest (for the low corner) or up and over your head (for the high corner) and reach with both hands to stop the shot.

While doing this, bend at the hip, always keeping your chest square to the shot to block more of the net. Doing this with your hands and arms will block more of the net and help control the shot and the ball after the save is made.

This type of save is a little more advanced than the one-handed T save, but it is derived from it. If you can do it, that is great, but can you do it effectively is the key to adding it to your repertoire of available saves that you should do.

Experiment with it in practice, which is why you are there. Don’t try anything new in a game until you have practiced it for a couple of days and are comfortable with it. Don’t force yourself to make that type of a save during a game. Let your instincts tell you to make it. They will kick in after a period of time practicing a different technique.

That’s all for now kids. Stay tuned, I’m not done with you goalies yet. Play hard and remember…”if you touch you stop it.”
