FIELD PLAYER BASIC PLAY

Lately, we have been talking about the hole-man position, what is expected of the position, and how to play it. However, the ball does have to get to the hole man. This is where the other field players come into the play of the game. Good and effective play around the perimeter opens up shots and creates passing lanes all around the pool.

First off, the ball is to be protected at all times. The correct position around the perimeter of the offensive set up, is to keep the shoulder of your non-shooting arm toward the defending player. The arm that holds the ball should be in line with your shoulders and fully extended behind you. The offensive and defensive player should closely resemble the letter “T” with their shoulder lines. With the offensive player in this position, the defender has to swim over or around the offensive player in order to get the ball resulting in a foul or open water, respectively.

From this position, several things can be done. You can shoot, pass to other players around the perimeter, or pass into the hole man. You should always be looking for the shot. Pump fake the ball around the perimeter and make the goalie feel he has to respect perimeter shots. This opens up shooting lanes elsewhere on the net for others to shoot at. Recognizing those areas and passing to those players for that shot will result in many goals.

We have only scratched the surface for field players. There are many more skills and game situations to discuss, so stay tuned.
