THE HOLE MAN "DIP" MOVE

Lately, we have been talking about the hole-man position, what is expected of the position, and how to play it. You have just received a pass from your team. The ball is sitting in front of you, now what???
The “Dip” shot, like all shots from the hole position, is a quick shot and is done in one fluid motion. The maneuver for the “Dip” shot is actually disguised as a hole turn, but changes shortly into it. For ease of explaining, I will describe the shot for a right-handed shooter.
You begin from your semi-sitting-lying down position in the water. The ball is sitting in front of you, approximately one arms length away. Reach and grab the ball with your right hand as you would if you were going to attempt to turn the hole defender. Twist your upper body a little more than usual, dropping left shoulder deeper into the water and positioning your left hand one the right hip of the hole defender. The hole defender will most likely lock up your shooting arm, going over your right shoulder and hooking his wrist under yours. Dip your head under water by putting your chin to your chest and push on the hip of the hole defender with your left hand (which should already be in place).
You want to shift your body from the position to a vertical position over where your hips are. Bring the left leg in close to your hips to reduce the water resistance on the move. Then kick your left leg down to the bottom of the pool, and swing your body away from your defender. This gives you the separation you need from your defender to shoot the ball. As you slide out have your right arm extended, pick the ball up from the bottom, do a couple of eggbeater kicks to elevate, and shoot, all in one motion. Do not pump fake the shot. If the maneuver is performed right, the goalie will be caught off guard and not have the opportunity to set up for a solid block.
This maneuver works really well to accommodate for a bad hole pass that doesn’t quite make it where you would like. It is a nice way to make something out of nothing. The shot may only work once or twice. The hole defender will begin to grab and hold you, taking the ejection foul to a goal. Make sure the shot is fast and that it scores. You may only get one of these shots a game.
This is only one maneuver that can be performed in the situation. There are many more that can be done, so stay turned.
