THE HOLE MAN "KICK-OUT"

Lately, we have been talking about the hole-man position, what is expected of the position, and how to play it. You have just received a pass from your team. The ball is sitting in front of you, now what???
The “Kick-out” shot is a quick shot and is done in one fluid motion. For ease of explaining, I will describe the shot for a right-handed shooter. You begin from your semi-sitting-lying down position in the water. You want to shift your body from the position to a vertical position over where your hips are. Bring the left leg in close to your hips to reduce the water resistance on the move. Then kick your left leg down to the bottom of the pool, and swing your body away from your defender. This gives you the separation you need from your defender to shoot the ball. As you slide out have your right arm extended, pick the ball up from the bottom, do a couple of eggbeater kicks to elevate, and shoot, all in one motion. Do not pump fake the shot. If the maneuver is performed right, the goalie will be caught off guard and not have the opportunity to set up for a solid block.
This maneuver works really well to accommodate for a bad hole pass that doesn’t quite make it where you would like. It is a nice way to make something out of nothing. The shot may only work once or twice. The hole defender will begin to grab and hold you, taking the ejection foul to a goal. Make sure the shot is fast and that it scores. You may only get one of these shots a game.
This is only one maneuver that can be performed in the situation. There are many more that can be done, so stay turned.
