RED AND YELLOW CARDS

In an attempt to maintain control during the games, the refs now carry Yellow and Red cards. Similar to their use in soccer, the meanings of the two cards are somewhat different. These cards apply primarily to the coaches on the bench, but can also be applicable to players both in and out of the water.
The Yellow Card serves as a warning to the head coach. According to the "New Rule Interpretations and Clarifications" from US Water Polo dated February 24, 2000, the Yellow Card means, "...the head coach must remain seated and may no longer advance to the 4-meter line when the team is on offense." The Yellow Card is only issued for that game, and does not carry over to the subsequent games. Players and other bench officials (assistant coach, team official, substitute, etc.) are not issued Yellow Cards, but are to receive Red Cards immediately.
Should a Red Card be issued to anyone, that person is to leave the pool deck. Furthermore, any coach or other team official who is issued a Red Card is not to interact or participate in the next game at all, and may not present on the bench. Any Red Card issued is only good for that tournament, and the penalties from the Red Card are not to be enforced beyond a single tournament.
