SLOUGH DEFENSE

The "Slough" (pronounced 'sluff') defense is an effective defense to employ against a team heavily dependant on their 2 meter man ("hole man"). The main principal to the Slough defense is to shift a player from his/her defensive position on the perimeter, to help the hole guard defend the hole man. Between the hole guard, and the perimeter defender most opposite ball position, this creates a double team.
The objective of this collapsing defense is to force an outside shot. Should the ball be passed into the hole, the possibilities of a steal or a minor foul, are greatly increased. For the rest of the defenders, a tight pressure defense should be utilized. Normally, the sloughing player will come from the driver position farthest from the ball. However, some teams have used wingers to slough on to the hole man.
One key to emphasis is the goalieās awareness of the outside shot. This defense is designed to frustrate the hole man, and deny the entry pass into that position. Therefore, be clear that the goalie should always be prepared for the outside shot, especially from the sloughed offender.
