BASIC DEFENSE

Defense is very simple. It is all body positioning. There are strategies to play defense from a set up. All of these will be discussed in their own scheme. Below is the individual body position that should be taken by a defensive player.

Simply put, when playing defense, keep your body between the offensive player and the goal. When retreating to your end to play defense, find the closest opponent to the net and go defend that person. If your defender has the ball and is going to shoot, put your hand up. A defenders' body should never be vertical within the water. The defenders' body should hunched over, practically lying down in the water, waiting for the player you are defending to move. A defensive player siting vertical in the water has a hard time moving around fast. Lying on top of the water makes moving in the water easier Contact while playing defense is good, however, do not leave your hands in one position. This gives the person you are defending something to grab on to get around you.
