THE SHOVE SHOT

The shove shot is a simple shot for anyone who can palm a water polo ball. The shot itself is simple: Begin by swimming with the ball. Around 4 meters away from the goal, grab the ball in mid-stroke and continue swimming with it. Kick a lot harder as you will slow down while swimming with the ball in your hand. Take shorter wider strokes, keeping the ball in front of your shoulders and not taking the ball underwater. When you are close to the goal, merely push and release the ball toward the goal, aiming for the corners. From the goalie perspective, it is difficult to anticipate the release of this shot, as it is disguised by the stroke and can be done at any time. To set this up as a team drill, start with the entire team at around min-pool. The first person in line begins to swim toward the goal. The next person in line gives a wet pass over the shoulder of the swimmer at around the 7 meter line. From there, perform the shove shot as described above. Add a goalie after the players have gotten the hang of the shot.
