THE SCREW SHOT

The screw shot resembles both the Shove Shot and the Tee-Shot. Begin by swimming with the ball. About 2 or 3 meters away from the goal is where I recommend to take the shot. In one motion while swimming, take a short stroke with your shooting arm, diving it into the water and picking the ball up from the bottom. Pick the ball up, and bring it back toward your shooting shoulder. Turn your wrist to the inside and shove the ball toward the corner of the goal. This shot is a good alternative for those with small hands that are unable to palm a water polo ball.
From the goalie perspective, this is a very disguised shot, and hard to react to. A draw back to the screw shot is that once the shooter is committed to the shot, there is no turning back. To set this up as a team drill, start with the entire team lined up around min-pool. The first person in line begins to swim toward the goal. The next person in line gives a wet pass over the shoulder of the swimmer at around the 7 meter line. From there, perform the Screw-shot as described above. Add a goalie after the players have gotten the hang of the shot.
