Niantic Knocks Off Waterbury

REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
SOUTH WINDSOR — Wes Alyard had three hits and three RBI, and Tyler Tonucci allowed five hits and fanned six to lead No. 12 Niantic to an 11-0 seven-inning, mercy-rule victory over No. 21 Waterbury in American Legion state tournament play-in round action Tuesday night.
Tim Bessette, Dennis Poulter, Kyle Murphy, Cristian Cuevas and Jon Fusco each had a single for Waterbury (18-10).
“It’s unfortunate to end the season like this, but the kids played hard and had a fantastic season,” said Waterbury assistant coach Jeff Van Stone, who was filling in for head coach Joe Eltman. “Their pitcher (Tonucci) did a fantastic job. We got hits, but couldn’t bundle them together.”
Vic Gonzalez turned a 4-3 double play in fourth inning and Ryan Plourde made a nice catch in right field in the second inning for Post 1. Murphy pitched well in relief.
Waterbury, which will return all but two players, Poulter and Kyle Kerski, next season, advanced to Tuesday’s game by rallying to beat West Hartford in the bottom of the ninth inning, 4-3, in its opener.
