Warwick Soccer Association: Welcome

The Warwick Soccer Association (WSA) is Warwick's oldest youth soccer league.  We are an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall development of our youth by offering various soccer programs for girls and boys ages 4 thru 18 years.

We strongly encourage the participation of parents in the soccer development of their child. We offer a variety of opportunities for adults including coaching, refereeing and even playing! Our success would not be possible without the time and effort put in by our dedicated volunteers and the support of our sponsors. If you would like to help--soccer experience or knowledge of the game not required!--please let us know. Finally, we would like to thank the Warwick Community for its continued support of youth soccer.

Feel free to contact us via email or at PO Box 6880, Warwick, Rhode Island 02887

Check out the WSA News for the latest WSA info, including team and individual accomplishments (and pictures!)

WSA 2010 KICK-OFF WEEKEND

Observations & Reminders

1)  U8 Coaches - a) On goal kicks, coaches for the non-kicking team should be sure to back their team off (around mid-field) so that the kicking team has a chance to move forward and carry play; b) No goal-keepers or goal-guarding (we hope to have a goal box pained on the fields for next games).

2)  Referees - Good reports all around and you all showed improvement over the course of the weekend games.  Remember: blow that whistle and make sure everyone can hear the call. Good job!

3) All Coaches - Regarding referees: Part of the instructing that goes on in our Instructional Division is teaching young referees how to call a game and giving them confidence to do so.  Many of them are first timers.  Please be sure to support them positively and offer advice during stoppages, not during game play (ie; never countermand a call or exhort them to "speak up" in front of the kids and parents during the game!).

WSA 2010 FALL RECREATIONAL

GENERAL INFO: WSA's Fall Recreational program officially begins in August with practices that are organized by the coaches (ie, they decide place, day and time). Generally, older divisions (U12 and U15) begin practice a little earlier in August than younger division teams (U6, U8, U10), which usually begin practicing from the middle to later in the month. This is all contingent on having enough coaches in any division to completely roster our registered players. We always need coaches!

SEASON SCHEDULE: We have traditionally begun playing games after Labor Day weekend, though we may have a few younger division games scheduled prior to then (August 28th, for instance). We go no later than the end of October. Specific schedules have not yet been finalized, but when they are will be published on the league website and sent to all coaches and coordinators. We do know two dates for sure: Picture Day is Saturday September 18th and our annual Sponsors Day round-robin tournament is Saturday, September 25th.

GAMES: U6's play on Saturday mornings while U8s and U10s play on Saturdays (mornings and early afternoon) and Sundays (early afternoon) at Bend Street field. U12 and U15 Girls play on Tuesday and Thursday nights while Boys play on Monday and Wednesday nights. U12s play at Mickey Stevens Sports Complex and U15s at Bend Street.

COMPETITION LEVEL: The U10, U8 and U6 divisions are all considered "Instructional", with no score or record being kept. They play Small-Sided Games: 3v3 for U6, 4v4 for U8 and 6v6 for U10. These games are played on small fields with smaller, age-appropriate goals.

U12 (8v8) and U15 (11v11) teams play competitive games with scores and records kept.  The team with the best regular season record in their division will go on to represent WSA in the statewide Kohl's Cup Tournament, held in Pawtucket November 6-7.  The remainder of the teams in the Division will compete for the WSA Cup in a post-season playoff the last week of October.

REFEREES WANTED

We always could use referee help, so if you're interested in becoming a Referee for WSA please contact Pam Candon at pamcandon@gmail.com.  If you're not currently a referee, then head over to RISRC to register for some of their upcoming classes!  (This is a great way for 12 year old and up soccer players to earn some side money, too)!
