: General Program Information
ABOUT OUR PROGRAM...
The Warwick Youth Wrestling Program is not affiliated with the Warwick School District. We do use the Warwick High School Wrestling Room to conduct our practice sessions and will use the Warwick High School and Middle School to conduct our Duals Tournaments. We are considered a "feeder" program by the School District, meaning our job is to prepare the young wrestlers to move up to the Junior High Program. We have a great relationship with the school district and appreciate their support of our program.
Our program is designed for any boy or girl who are between the school ages of kindergarten through 6th grade. 7th graders and above would need to wrestle at the junior high or senior high level.
PRACTICES:
Due to the fact that the program draws a large number of elementary wrestlers per season it is understandable that we have a wide variety of experience / skill levels within our program. To better accommodate each and every wrestler, we run three different practice groups.
*The Advanced Group practices 3 times per week - Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday.
*The Intermediate Group practices 2 times per week, Tuesday & Thursday.
*The Novice Group practices 1 time per week on Monday.
* WEDNESDAY IS USED AS OUR MAKEUP DAY WHEN THERE ARE SCHEDULING CONFLICTS WITH THE SCHOOL. YOU NEED TO CONTINUALLY CHECK THE WEBSITE FOR CHANGES.
Go to our "Calendar" page or "Practices" page for practice dates & times.
WHAT TO WEAR TO PRACTICE:
Wrestlers need to wear shorts or sweat pants and t-shirts to practice. The shorts and sweat pants must not have pockets, buckles, snaps, rivets, or belt loops as the have the possibility of causing injury. The wrestlers may wear wrestling shoes or sneakers. Street shoes will not be permitted on the mats. Wearing of any type of jewelry is not acceptable. Headgear and mouthpieces are optional for practice.
TOURNAMENTS:
Your childs participation in tournaments is strictly voluntary. Some wrestlers want to participate in tournaments early in their wrestling career, while others would like to just attend practice and learn the basic skills. We have to rely on you as parents to determine if your child is ready to compete. Often times, children are overwhelmed by their first tournament. We suggest taking your child to the first tournament just to watch. See how the child reacts to the situation and then make your decision. The decision to enter your child into a tournament does not have to be made at the beginning of the season, you will have time after the season starts to evaluate your child. During tournaments, your wrestler will be matched up according to the wrestler's weight, age, and experience / skill level.
Although we may sell singlets and other merchandise, your child does not need to purchase a singlet or wrestling shoes to compete in "B" and "C" level tournaments. They just need to follow the same guidelines as listed above in the "What to wear to practice" section. We do ask that children wear the issued Warwick Wrestling t-shirt when participating in tournaments if they do not have a singlet.
