Sharon's Brian Mukasa Scores 1,000th Point as Sharon Drops Canton in Hockomock clash
By Pat Bradley, Globe Correspondent In a battle of high-powered Hockomock foes, the Sharon Eagles (6-1) soared over rival Canton, 77-64, handing the Bulldogs just their second loss of the season. Senior guard Jimmy Fritzson dropped 27 points, but it was his fellow captain, senior guard Brian Mukasa, who stole the show. Late in the fourth quarter, Mukasa drove the lane and picked up a two-shot foul, needing 2 points to reach the 1,000 point milestone. Mukasa drained both to the roar of the crowd. The 5-foot-10-inch Mukasa, who is averages more than 16 points per game this season, is described as a “very high character guy,” by coach Bruce Jackman. Mukasa “has been a great leader” for Sharon, sharing the scoring load with Fritzson, who is expected to score his 1,000th point later this season. Jackman knew his team would face an uphill battle, as Canton had only lost one game headed into the matchup. Sharon trailed by 10 at the half, 40-30. A third quarter burst gave the Eagles the lead for good, though, as Mukasa and Frtizson led a defensive press that sparked an 11-point run in just 90 seconds. “We’ve played very well, our only loss came to Mansfield who is the number one team in the state, and even that game we gave them a run for their money. They’re a super team they’re terrific,” Jackman said. Although Jackman knew the milestone bucket was on the horizon, he didn’t draw up a play for Mukasa, who entered the game with 987 career points. “We run a spread offense with four guards, and Brian and Jimmy have the freedom to take it to the basket. He’s on his own there and got to the line.” Mukasa finished with 15 points, while sophomore guard Jordan Mello-Klein added 23 in the win.
