Forgive the St. John’s Prep boys basketball team for being excited on Tuesday. It was, after all, tied with Catholic Conference leader and host Boston College High School at halftime in a game with significant league ramifications. The problem for the Prep? That’s as close as Colin Halpin and Jameel Galloway were willing to let it get. The BC High seniors put on a show in the second half as the hosts remained perfect (5-0) in the conference with a 71-56 victory. “Colin’s a senior captain, and he knows in certain times he’s going to have to be a little more assertive,” said coach Bill Loughlane, whose team is 9-5 overall. “I think he felt tonight was one of those nights, and we’re glad he did. “(Galloway) did a great job on the defensive boards for us against a big, strong team. That’s huge for us.” The senior forwards have been targets for college recruiters and coaches this season, and in the second half, they showed why. Galloway scored nine of his 15 points after halftime, with highlights including a dunk in traffic to open the second half, and a thunderous alley-oop that made it 60-49 and helped put St. John’s away. He also led the defense, grabbing 10 rebounds and turning in five blocks. “I try to do whatever the coach wants me to do,” Galloway said. “If he thinks I should do this to be a benefit to the team, then I’ll do that. He plays me to be defensive and post up, so I’ll try that anytime.” Halpin, with an average of 18 points per game, has been the go-to scorer for BC High this season, and the senior stepped up once again when the team needed him most. He scored eight of the team’s first 13 points after the break as it went up, 49-38, and finished the game with 24 points while also grabbing eight rebounds. “I came out feeling that if I played my game and stayed aggressive, I’d be able to get to the hoop and get fouled,” Halpin said. “I try to do the little things. Get position in the post before the ball’s even there, so I can get it on a reversal. I try to do the dirty work before the ball gets to me.”
