Today the New England Recruiting Report catches you up on some news and notes regarding the worlds of recruiting and high school basketball.

Rod Odom continues to be a priority recruit for lots of big time colleges.  Xavier became the most recent school to offer him a scholarship a couple of weeks ago joining Boston College, West Virginia, Seton Hall, Rutgers, and Holy Cross.  The coaching staff from BC has been particularly attentive, being present at three different games this month.  Georgia Tech head coach Paul Hewitt and assistant John O’Connell were both at Middlesex’ practice on Tuesday night and Virginia and Villanova were up last week to catch a game.  Harvard, Stanford, Providence, and Memphis were all at the Middlesex/St. Mark’s game 10 days ago.

CATCHING UP ON RODERICK ODOM JR.

Versatile 2010 prospect with high academics getting coaching vists

When you stand 6-foot-8 and possess skills of a guard, college basketball coaches will want to take a look at you for themselves. That is exactly what is going on with the case of Rod Odom Jr., a junior guard/forward from Middlesex School of Concord (MA).

At 6-foot-8, 195 pounds and armed with nearly a 7-foot wingspan, Roderick Odom Jr. is one of the most versatile players in the country among the class of 2010 with his ability to handle and pass the ball, shoot with range and defend multiple positions on the floor. It helps when a growth spurt moves you from the size of a guard to the height of a power forward in a short period of time.

“The last two seasons, Rod has grown seven inches,” Roderick Odom Sr. tells the NBE Basketball Report about his son. “He has improved his shooting and is working to get stronger.”

One Big East assistant that has been in to see a work out at Middlesex School compared Odom’s style of play and potential to former North Carolina State star Julius Hodge, although Odom is a better long range shooter, and to former Maryland standout Drew Nicholas, although Odom might be more athletic.

“So far Seton Hall, Providence, West Virginia, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette (and) Xavier,” Mr. Odom responded when asked to list the high major programs that have come by the Middlesex School to take a look at Rod Jr. this month. “The recruiting has picked (up),” Mr. Odom stated. “Coaches love his versatility and floor demeanor.”

At this point, schools like Holy Cross, William Mary and several of the Ivy League schools have made their interest serious and now Big East schools such as Seton Hall and West Virginia have recently extended scholarship offers and Rod Odom Sr. believes more schools will follow with an offer soon.

Expect schools to keep coming by to see more of Roderick Odom Jr. at the Middlesex School. They will see an intriguing basketball talent with the complete package of high level academics to boot. He is definitely a name to remember in the class of 2010.

He projects as a 6-8 shooting guard.

“Most of the schools are considering putting him at the two because of his passing ability and his ability to shoot and his ability to guard that position, too,” Rod Sr. said.

Boston College became the latest major school to offer a scholarship to 6-8 junior Rod Odom of the Middlesex (Ma.) School.

“He went down there Tuesday,” said Rod Odom Sr., whose family lives on Long Island. “His coach brought him down to take another look at the campus. He played some pickup with the guys. He sat down with (Coach Al) Skinner for a while. Coach Skinner gave me a call yesterday to offer the scholarship.

“The academics at Boston College are great. Coach Skinner has a great record, and it’s an ACC school so there are a lot of attractive things about Boston College that we like. He definitely has an opportunity to play there away and they have had a knack for finding talent and developing that talent.”

Odom, who projects as a 6-8 shooting guard, now holds offers from Boston College, Seton Hall, West Virginia, William & Mary, Holy Cross, with Princeton, Harvard and Columbia also interested.

“Most of the coaches that have seen him liked what they see and I expect more offers down the road as more coaches see him,” Odom Sr. said.

He plans to visit Georgetown for Midnight Madness on Oct. 17 and may try to squeeze in another visit to Marquette this month, “but I don’t think he’s going to be able to do Marquette,” Odom Sr. said.

Odom Sr. added that his son will also visit Rutgers over Thanksgiving week.

“Rutgers is going to offer, but Fred Hill likes to sit down with the recruit and offer the scholarship,” Odom Sr. said. “When he gets home for Thanksgiving we’re definitely going to make it up to try to see those guys.”

West Virginia became the second Big East school to offer a scholarship to 6-8 junior Rod Odom of the Middlesex (Ma.) School after a workout at his school Sunday.

“I just got a call from (West Virginia assistant) Billy Hahn offering him a full scholarship,” said Rod Odom Sr. “They were excited about what they saw at the workout. Rod shot the lights out.”

Seton Hall assistant Derm Player was also at the workout, and Rod Sr. said Seton Hall had previously been the first Big East school to offer. Odom also holds offers from Holy Cross, William & Mary, with Columbia, Harvard and Penn also interested.
