Boston Warrior AAU Boy's Basketball: Warrior News: Weekly Update - Odom, Anderson shine as Middlesex can't hold on against highly rated St. Marks
The first half offered many lead changes, and tough defensive play on both ends. Rod Odom led the charge offensively, putting up a few highlights on both ends of the floor. . The score at halftime was 23-22 St. Mark's. In the second half Middlesex continued to fight, but found it hard to contest the frontline of St. Mark's who run at 6' 9", 6' 7" and 6'10". Nonetheless, the Zebras showed moments of brilliance, often pulling within two or three points of the lead. Four St. Mark's free throws in the last 45 seconds bumped their lead to 8 points, effectively ended the game.
Odom finished the day with 13 points on 5 for 9 shooting, and added 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Despite their whole defensive game plan being centered around stopping him, he acquitted himself quite well. Scott Anderson also had a great game, finishing with a game high 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
"Florida signee Erik Murphy scored 14 points as St. Mark's won 54-46. "Erik Murphy was impressive and every time he touched the ball on the left block he scored," Middlesex coach Jamie Gallagher said.
Memphis, Boston College, Providence, Stanford and Harvard head coach Tommy Amaker were on hand looking at Odom."
Stayed close to the city in order to catch a Boston North/Catholic Central Large doubleheader.
The sojourn began in Eastie where the Jets of East Boston were looking to sweep Charlestown for the second time in three years. With both teams a little down from recent years, the crowd typified that as the smallish gym was barely half filled at tip-off time.
East Boston (8-4) jumped out to a 24-11 lead and never looked back in posting a 63-58 victory over Charlestown. The Jets took advantage of their size inside as senior center Orlando Zayas registered a career-high with 16 points and five rebounds.
As for Charlestown (6-6), the effort was certainly there, but the lack of a true take-charge point guard really hurts the Townies in key junctures. Which is too bad because they do have some good wing players in Jamel Williamson (17 points) and Anderson Santana (15).
Jumped into old reliable and made it across the city in plenty of time to get to Carnell Coliseum (just kidding, coach Suttles), aka Cathedral’s home gym for a Catholic Central Large showdown between Cathedral and Bishop Fenwick. Cathedral won the earlier meeting between the schools and could all but clinch the CCL title with a win.
But Mike Clifford had other ideas.
The 6-foot-7 senior center was immense with 29 points and 20 rebounds as the Crusaders avenged their only loss with a 72-61 victory. Strutting his stuff in front of BU coach Dennis Wolff, Central Connecticut assistant Steve Curran (a college teammate of current Cathedral AD Larry Merritt at Merrimack in the early 1990s’) and a few other college and prep scouts in the stands, Clifford missed his first three shots, then proceeded to make 13 of his final 18 shots from the field.
He had plenty of help from senior forward Phil Eagan, who played what first-year head coach Mike Kane later termed “his best game of the year”, picking up a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Senior guard Nolan DiPanfilo, who scuffled through three quarters, rebounded with eight big points in the final quarter, while younger brother Brett DiPanfilo came off the bench to knock down three trifectas in the second quarter.
After a late night last night, two Middlesex League teams kicked off the second day of the Hoophall Classic, at Springfield College, with impressive victories. The Minutemen had a balanced scoring attack from Danny O’Keefe (12 points, 11 rebounds), Jeremy Moss (11 points, seven rebounds), Mike Igoe (11) and Lance Greene (10) to stay in control throughout the game. Lexington jumped out to a big lead early and made it stay, for a 61-37 win.Jeremy Moss also went 3 for 3 from behind the three-point line in the first half, keeping Lexington ahead for a 28-18 halftime lead.
Watertown came into the afternoon’s 2007 state title rematch with Sabis International missing two key starters – seniors Benyam Kerman (suspended indefinitely) and Cory Stockmal, the latter of whom sprained his ankle in a 61-44 loss to Belmont last night. So today’s result, a 62-47 win, comes as a huge sigh of relief.“Oh God, coming out like that?” head coach Steve Harrington said. “It’s hard to come back after you lose like we did last night, missing three of our guys. But having Ricky Morrissey back was huge.”Indeed, Morrissey – who missed last night’s loss with an illness – provided spark in his return, scoring 14 points while Kyle Stockmal had 15 with seven rebounds. Two role players, guard Marco Coppola and reserve Tim Barba, each nailed four 3-pointers, the brunt of Watertown’s 12 treys.
Lexington 60 Belmont 49Belmont, Mass. - The first meeting between these two teams earlier in the winter season was similar to Tuesday night’s game. The Belmont and Lexington High boys basketball teams met the Wenner Field House, and just like round one this was a competitive ballgame for three quarters. Although the Minutemen began to pull away late in the third, the Marauders were still very much in it. But key baskets from the field, impressive free throw shooting and a solid defense effort eventually did in Belmont, as the Minutemen came away with a 60-49 road victory.
Leading the way for Lexington was senior Lance Green, who poured in a game-high 16 points. Senior Danny O’Keefe added 13 points and 14 rebounds, and senior Jean-Paul Alexandre and junior Jeremy Moss each had eight points for the Minutemen, who improved to 9-1.
For Belmont, senior Monte Goodwin (14 rebounds) and junior Andrew Musler (eight boards) contributed 15 points apiece.
Belmont 61, Watertown 44
This Belmont team proved it could play with anyone last Friday night. Even undefeated Watertown, a team that has been rolling through the Middlesex League this winter.
But Belmont was more than ready for this matchup and dominated the contest. The Marauders, who led by three at the end of the first half, 33-30, held the Red Raiders to a single point in the third quarter (out-scoring them by a 16-1 margin).
Andrew Musler led the way for the Marauders with 20 points and seven rebounds, and Anthony Paolillo contributed 16 points and 13 boards.
