Westford boys hoops defeats A-B in overtime in Lowell tourney final
Lowell - Tuesday’s game between the Acton-Boxborough and Westford Academy boys basketball teams determined which team received the Canaligator Bobble Head Trophy that went to the winner of the Greater Lowell Holiday Tournament.The next two times the rivals meet, it could determine which team will get to hang a Dual County League Large School championship banner in its gym.The Grey Ghosts took home the trophy from UMass-Lowell’s Costello Athletic Center, defeating A-B, 95-94 in overtime.Tournament MVP Peter Lynch scored 30 points to lead Westford.The Colonials played an up-tempo style and shot effectively from the outside, holding leads after each of the first three quarters. At the end of the first quarter, it was 23-14 and at halftime, A-B was up, 46-39. The Colonials connected on 10 3-pointers in the first half and 14 total. Brett Miller (30 points) made six 3-pointers, while Kyle Curry (22 points) connected on four. John Williamson (18 points) made three shots from beyond the arc.In the fourth quarter, the Grey Ghosts climbed into the lead, first tying the game at 75 on a 3-pointer from T.J. Jann (13 points) with 4:58 left. On the next trip down the court, Alex Haines (22 points) made a tip-in, giving Westford the lead.Jann sank another 3-pointer while being fouled by Alex Kastrinellis with 3:57 left and he made the ensuing free throw to put Westford up 81-77.
A-B battled its way back into the lead with Miller, Williamson and Kastrinellis combining to make nine of 10 free throws in the final 3:30. With 3.5 seconds left, Westford’s Mark Cornelius (13 points) made a layup to tie the game at 87 and send it into overtime.
In the first minute of overtime, Haines fouled out for Westford and Curry picked up his fifth foul for A-B. After Curry’s layup with 3:15 left in the extra session, however, A-B did not make another shot from the floor.With 33.4 seconds remaining, Andrew Chandler’s 3-pointer put Westford up, 95-93. A Williamson free throw with 27.5 left cut the Ghosts’ lead to a point.After a missed Westford shot with 17.2 seconds left, John Kahane grabbed a loose ball under the basket, giving A-B the ball 94 feet away from the basket. The Colonials
inbounded the ball after a timeout and got it down the court. Chandler eventually made a defensive stop, however, securing the victory for the Ghosts.Joining Lynch on the tournament All-Star team were Haines and Cornelius of Westford and Curry and Miller of A-B.
Egi Gjikondi Named Malden Holiday Tournament MVP
Sophomore center Egi Gjikondi was named M.V.P. of the 2008 MHS Holiday Tournament for his outstanding play in leading the Tornadoes to the tournament championship. Gjikondi averaged 24.5 PPG and 15.5 RPG in the teams' wins over Bedford and Framingham Saturday and Monday nights. Here are the members of the All-Tournament Team for the 2008 MHS Holiday Tournament.

Nashoba Tech Tournament
Bishop Fenwick 80 Nashoba Tech 72 The Vikings (3-1) twice closed within 4 points late in the game, but Tournament MVP Nolan DiPanfilo of Fenwick swished 8-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Willie Luna had another monster game for Nashoba with 29 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals on his way to a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Xavier Canty contributed 20 points and 3 steals, Jon Alves 8 points and Sean Sullivan 6 points, 8 boards, 3 blocked shots. For undefeated Fenwick (5-0), which led 38-28 at the half, All-Tournament Team selection Mike Clifford netted 27 points, DiPanfilo 24 and Phil Eagan 18. The Crusaders won it at the free throw line, where they held a 19-10 scoring edge.

The Tigers (5-1) earned 5th place in the tourney with this win, led by All-Tournament Team honoree James Williamson with 16 points and Greg Moodie's 14.
