BROCKTON— On Wednesday night, the Brockton High School boys basketball team opened the 2008 portion of its schedule the same way it ended 2007 — with a victory.
Albeit, none of the Boxers' victories have been more difficult or gratifying to date, as Brockton pulled out a thrilling 85-82 overtime victory over longtime rival Cambridge Rindge & Latin, to extend its winning streak to three games.
With Brockton (5-1) trailing, 75-74, with less than a minute remaining in regulation after Cambridge took the lead off a steal and lay-up by center Jerard Warren, the Boxers came out of a timeout and senior guard Kyle Gerry (game-high 19 points) buried a 3-pointer from the corner to take a 77-74 lead.
“The play was designed for (Louis) Montes to get the ball in the low post, and I said, if the play goes wrong, be prepared to do something else, and Kyle made a big shot,” said Brockton's first-year coach Bob Boen.
Though the Boxers scored, they left too much time on the clock as Warren scored again for Cambridge off an offensive rebound to tie the score at 77 and force overtime.
The two high-scoring teams came out slowly in the overtime until Brockton's Corey Cooper (18 points) took a steal the distance for a lay-up. Gerry followed with a short jumper off a turnover to put the Boxers ahead, 81-77.
