Warm Springs Little League: Umpires Corner

Umpire Corner
Umpiring is important, fun, and a great way to support the Little League program. It is as much a part of the game as is playing it, and no game is better without umpires. To the youngsters in our program, it doesn’t seem like a real game without “real” umpires. It is a rewarding feeling to walk off the field after a game knowing that we have made a difference in the Little League playing experience of the youth who participate.

We encourage everyone to try umpiring. We strive to make it a fun, enjoyable, and rewarding experience. The chief umpire will provide classroom and field training in the rules and procedures used to officiate Little League games at both base and plate positions. If additional training is required, the chief umpire will set it up on request, and the board of directors has also authorized slots in District and Regional training clinics.

Our Warm Springs umpires are all volunteers, and our board of directors encourages support of our volunteer umpire program. We provide minor rewards in the form of the “coke and a dog” program, and provision of hats, shirts, and other personal items as part of the volunteer umpire program. We provide training and stock a full equipment room of umpire gear. We have a zero tolerance policy for anyone who is disrespectful or discourteous to our volunteer umpires. It is not acceptable to shout at or abuse our volunteer umpires, whether you are a parent, coach or youth participant, and our board of directors has been quick to enforce penalties if it occurs. We particularly ask for support of our young volunteer umpires, who will be the backbone of the volunteer umpire corps for years to come.

The role of the volunteer umpire is to mediate by knowing the rules of the game, and being in the best possible position to read a play and make the calls. We are responsible for the safety of the young participants by checking equipment is legal and in good order, and by checking the field for potential dangerous conditions.

The volunteer umpire is an extension of the District volunteer umpire staff and of the Little League organization. Some of our qualities include honesty, integrity, humor, and a sense of fair play. We strive to improve our umpiring skills, knowledge, and abilities, and develop an appreciation for the capabilities and limitations of the young athletes playing in our Little League program. We understand that a trained volunteer umpire can inspire our youth participants to recognize authority and abide by the rules, while increasing their enjoyment of the game.
