Walton survives for fifth state title

Published: 05/10/2008

MARIETTA - Walton may have earned its fifth state boys soccer championship Friday, but it didn't come easy.

Collins Hill battled Walton on even terms through most of the game before the Raiders scored on an own goal late in the second half to beat the Eagles, 2-1, in the Class AAAAA title game at Raider Valley.

It was the fifth state championship for Walton (16-4) -and second in three years - for the Raiders, who previously won in 1986, 1995, 2002 and 2006.

It was also the second state crown for Walton's outstanding senior class, led by Connor Barbaree, Cameron Cooksey, Taylor White, Michael Fuller and goalkeeper Ben Yabrow.

"This senior class has been at least to the state semifinals four years in a row and has won two state championships," Boozer said. "They have provided strong leadership for us and we're really going to miss them."

For Barbaree, who returned to the lineup after missing the last three games with a hamstring pull, it was a satisfying conclusion to his high school career.

"We just played as hard as we could," Barbaree said. "We worked hard all season and the all the hard work has paid off."

Collins Hill (18-5) didn't go down without a fight, however, as the Eagles battled Walton to a scoreless tie in the first half and came back with a goal to tie the game, 1-1, midway through the second half.

"To be honest, (Collins Hill) took it to us," Boozer said. "They're a very good team and they did a good job keeping the pressure on us."

Collins Hill went on the attack from the beginning and nearly got a goal within the first minute of the game before Greg Hoover's shot hit the crossbar for the Eagles with 39:27 remaining in the first half.

Collins Hill continued to control the action through most of the half, getting several shots on Yabrow.

However, Walton ended the first half on a promising note when Daniel Gnecco's shot went just to the right of the goal with 1:53 left.

Walton continued its momentum into the second half and finally got on the scoreboard with 32:42 remaining in the game, when White took a free kick from Barbaree and headed his shot past Collins Hill goalkeeper Jesse Garbowski to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Collins Hill nearly tied the game soon after that when Juan Giraldo's bicycle kick was stopped by a diving save from Yabrow with 26:30 left in the game.

The Eagles were luckier on their next scoring attempt as David Holm blasted a shot past Yabrow with 22:35 left to even the score, 1-1.

Collins Hill nearly took the lead with 13:07 left when Ricardo Ortega's shot skidded just left of the goal.

Yabrow stopped another Collins Hill scoring attempt when he deflected a shot by Ortega with 4:40 left.

Walton broke through with 2:41 left, when Cooksey booted a cross from the corner that bounced off a Collins Hill defender guarding Barbaree and dribbled into the goal for an own goal that clinched the state title for the Raiders.

Walton coach Bucky Boozer acknowledged, his team was a bit fortunate. But they were plenty good, too. And once again, they're champions.

Walton had all it could handle with Collins Hill, but the with the score tied at 1-1, the Raiders scored on an own goal when an Eagles defender shielding Walton's Connor Barbaree kicked the ball in the net with 2:41 left. The goal stood and with the 2-1 victory the Raiders claimed the Class AAAAA title, their second in three years and the fifth for Boozer.

"I'm exhausted," Boozer said as blue-clad fans and players celebrated on the field. "I'm getting too old for this."

Collins Hill "took it to us pretty good," Boozer said, but the Raiders experience and composure pulled them through.

"We said, 'no, we're not losing,'" Boozer said.

Barbaree, a Clemson signee, returned from a hamstring injury, and was involved in both Walton goals. Senior keeper Ben Yabrow, who was often under pressure from the quick Eagles, came up with an incredible save on Juan Giraldo's bicycle kick in front of the net with 25 minutes left.

Boozer said the "point blank save" was huge, but he shouldn't have been surprised. In five playoff games, Yabrow and the defense led by Andrew Natalino, Michael Fuller, Cameron Cooksey and Jordan Schrenk allowed only two goals.

Collins Hill (18-5), the third seed from Region 7, outplayed the host Raiders, Eagles coach Stan Carpenter said. This marks the third time in four years that the Raiders ended the Eagles' season.

"We had them," he said. "Just sometimes the ball the bounces that way. We know they didn't come in and poundsus, we just go unlucky on the breaks. We felt like we had them. We just ran out of time."

Walton (16-4) scored first on a beautiful goal off a free kick. From 25 yards out left of the goal, Barbaree served up a perfect ball and Taylor White charged in from the right and headed the ball back to the right corner for a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.

On the game-winning play, Barbaree charged the net and took a cross from Cooksey. As Barbaree and the defender charged toward the net, the ball slipped off the defender's leg and into the goal.

After a one-year absence, the Walton boys soccer team returns to the Class AAAAA state championship finals today with an 8 p.m. clash at Raider Valley against Collins Hill.

The top-ranked Raiders (15-4) last won the state title back in 2006 and several players on this year's team were a part of that squad.

Walton coach Bucky Boozer is hopeful that the experience some of his players gained from that 2006 championship season helps propel the squad to a title today.

"Some of these guys have been in this position before and won," Boozer said. "As long as those guys are still hungry and the young players, who haven't won it, are also hungry, then we can do it again. Everyone knows it's a final, now they just have to play like its one. They have to fight for it."

The Eagles will be looking for revenge today against the Raiders after Walton bounced Collins Hill from the first round of the playoffs last season by a 2-1 score.

"It doesn't surprise me that Collins Hill is in the finals," Boozer said. "We played them last season. They have a nice mix of players, a solid goalkeeper and a good center back.

"They are very quick and skillful players. We'll have our work cut out for us. They have size and power and can beat you one-on-one. Collins Hill has a lot of weapons."

Walton's ride to the finals has been keyed by its defense, which has posted three shutouts and allowed only one goal in four playoff games.

In order to capture its second state title in three years and third in seven seasons, the Raiders will have to continue their stellar defensive play and catch some breaks on offense.

"We won in penalty kicks (5-4 over Brookwood) in the semifinals, took a day to recover, and went back to work to prepare for Collins Hill," Boozer said. "Our guys are staying sharp, offensively and defensively. Our practices have been tough, but we've gotten a lot accomplished. Now, it's time to play the game and beat Collins Hill."

Boozer has been at the helm of each of Walton's four state soccer titles, also capturing crowns in 1986 (his second year at the helm) and 1995.

The Raiders have been to the semifinals of the state playoffs now for four straight seasons and with their experience to lead them, they are poised to complete the season with another championship banner.

"There isn't too much pressure with a team like this," Boozer said. "They've experienced this before and now it's just time to go out and play good soccer. In games like this, everybody has to go out and do their jobs and stay focused.

"What we have to do is stop them from playing and get our game going. Our seniors have a big influence on our team in terms of leadership and direction, which will be an important factor for us (tonight) in order to win."

Raiders buck Broncos in PKs
2008Walton vs Brookwood

Not much separated the two highest ranked Class AAAAA boys soccer teams on Tuesday night in Snellville.

Just a single save.

Walton goalkeeper Ben Yabrow made it in a penalty-kick shootout, ending Brookwood's season with a 1-0 victory (5-4 on PKs) in the state semifinals.

The Raiders will host Friday's state title game against Collins Hill, which defeated East Coweta in the other semifinal.

Brookwood's defense had allowed just 13 goals in 21 games, recording 14 shutouts entering Tuesday's contest.

The Broncos entered with five straight shutouts, including six of their last seven. But on Tuesday, the hosts couldn't create offense - but neither could the Raiders.

"It was nip and tuck, they're a very good team," Walton coach Bucky Boozer said. "Both teams pass the ball, play solid defense and have solid goalkeeping. We had bits and pieces but I thought they had (better play) more of the game, especially in the first half. But I thought we had the overtimes."

Walton's best chances were two Taylor White headers off long throws but the hard shots were saved by Jamie Deal.

Brookwood's best shot came in the 64th minute, when Ryan Christopher sent a low shot that forced a diving save from Walton goalie Ben Myatt. Myatt played the second half in relief of Yabrow, who came back in for the shootout.

Scott Phelts of Brookwood and White opened the shootout with goals, but the first kick of round two decided the match. Yabrow dove to his left and snuffed out the low shot of Bronco freshman Walker Zimmerman.

Andrew Natalino, Zach Hunter and Jin Woo Seo made the Raiders' next three kicks, while brothers John and Theo Yang answered with conversions for Brookwood.

The Broncos' Joey Deloney made his fifth-round PK, leaving it up to Walton's Cameron Cooksey.

KENNESAW - The second-round state playoff showdown between defending Class AAAAA boys soccer champion Harrison and 2006 champ Walton ended in controversy Tuesday with the Raiders taking a 2-1 victory at Hoya Stadium.

Taylor White scored on a penalty kick with 18 seconds remaining in the game, beating Hoyas goalkeeper Patrick Martineau to the left.

"It just feels great to get the win," White said. "I knew exactly where I wanted to go with the ball and I was surprised (Martineau) didn't guess right. We know each other pretty well."

With the clock running down and the score tied, 1-1, the second-ranked Hoyas (16-2) cleared the ball from their end, but it was recovered by No. 3 Walton's Andrew Natalino near midfield. Natalino kicked the ball back into the Hoyas' box, where Martineau and Daniel Gnecco fought for possession.

Both players went down to the ground during the skirmish and Martineau was called for the foul, setting up White's winning score.

Harrison coach Jonathan Gross, who wasn't pleased with the call and tried to have a few words with the referees following the game, had to be restrained by his assistant coaches as the officials headed off the field.

"It was a 50-50 battle in the box and we both went down," Gnecco said about the skirmish. "(Martineau) was called for the foul and we got the penalty kick.

"Taylor is the captain of the team and he has a lot of confidence. I knew he'd make that shot."

"(My teammates and I) talked about who was going to take the penalty kick, and I wanted it," White said. "I wanted to win the game and I put the burden on my shoulders."

The contest was a hard-fought match from start to finish. Harrison struck first in the 26th minute when Michael Hansen scored from 10 yards out off a rebounded save from Raider goalkeeper Ben Yabrow. Charlton Gutierrez fed a pass into the box that was collected by Manuel Rosas. Yabrow deflected his shot out into the field of play, where Hansen took advantage to put the Hoyas on top, 1-0.

Walton (13-4) returned the favor in the second period with a Gnecco goal in 43rd minute. White headed Cameron Cooksey's cross into the net, but Martineau made the save. Gnecco recovered the rebound and tied the contest, 1-1.

"It's always a battle when these two teams face each other," Walton coach Bucky Boozer said. "(Leading scorer) Connor Barbaree pulled a hamstring this week, so our guys had to dig deep to win this one. We gave as good as we got (Tuesday) and we matched up well with them. Everybody did their job and I'm really proud of my guys."

Gross echoed Boozer's sentiments, despite the loss.

"It was a fantastic game," Gross said. "Walton played to its strengths. I'm really proud of my guys, though. We got done what we needed to, but things just didn't work out for us in the end."

The events surrounding Walton's penalty kick were not lost on Martineau and White, who play on the same club team and will suit up this fall to play soccer at the University of Kentucky. Martineau wasn't happy about the call - nor the outcome - but there is at least one nice thing to come out of the match.

"It's not the best way for (Harrison) to end it," Martineau said. "It's not the way I wanted us to go out. But, I'd rather it be (Taylor) than anyone else. He's a great friend of mine and congratulations to him."

MARIETTA - The shots hit everything but the back of the net in the first half of Tuesday's first-round playoff match between Walton and Central Gwinnett at Raider Valley.

The second half, however, was a different story as Connor Barbaree scored two goals roughly 22 minutes apart to lead the second-seeded Raiders over the third-seeded Black Knights, 2-0, in the Class AAAAA state tournament.

Walton (12-4), ranked fifth in the state, advanced to the second round of the state playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.

"It's about surviving and moving on to the next round," Raiders coach Bucky Boozer said. "Central Gwinnett is a very good team. We just had to be patient up front and keep taking shots. We had chances in the first half, but they didn't fall. We were fortunate that things started working out for us in the second half."

A scoreless first half continued well into the second until Taylor White sent a feed to the left side in front of a streaking Barbaree, who collected the ball, side-stepped his defender, and sent a quick shot inside the low left post to beat goalkeeper Josh Aiken-Phillips, that gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

"It feels good to get the win and to get that first victory under our belts," Barbaree said. "We played well overall, I thought. We were knocking on the door in the first half, so it was good to get two in the second."

Barbaree's second score came off a free kick from roughly 25 yards out after he was taken down inside the box. Three Black Knights lined up in front of Barbaree, but he sent the shot from right to left past a diving Aiken-Phillips to put the Raiders ahead, 2-0.

"I saw (Aiken-Phillips) cheating to the other side," Barbaree said. "He's a big guy. I knew I could get it past him if I hit it right."

Neither team could capitalize on first-half opportunities. Walton missed out on at least two scoring chances as Cameron Cooksey headed a shot over the ball from inside the box at 17:10 and Barbaree sent a shot over the crossbar as well in the early going at the 36:30 mark.

The Black Knights fared no better, missing out at the 35:45 mark when Walton goalkeeper Ben Yabrow ran out to deflect a Manase Irakoze shot. Devon Fernandez collected the rebound, but his wide-open shot hit the top of the crossbar to maintain the scoreless tie. Central Gwinnett nearly scored again with 1:54 left, but Allen Brefo sent his shot over the goal from about 5 yards out.

"Although we missed some chances, we just kept encouraging each other to keep making plays," White said. "We just continued to play our game and to keep the ball in front of us."

Barbaree nearly picked up a hat trick for the Raiders, but reserve keeper Andy Szabo deflected a point-blank one-on-one attempt with 4:35 remaining in the contest.

"We're a young team and we'll have everybody back next year," Central Gwinnett coach Bryan Allen said. "I'm really proud of my guys and our future looks bright. We fought and competed (Tuesday) and had opportunities in the first half. Walton is a veteran team and they showed that (Tuesday)."

The Raiders will travel to cross-county rival Harrison on Tuesday to face the Hoyas in the second round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs. The two teams will meet for the third straight year in the state playoffs. The matchup also pits the last two state. In 2007, Harrison defeated the Raiders, 4-0, in the semifinals en route to its state championship. Walton defeated the Hoyas, 1-0, to claim the 2006 crown.

Walton holds off Pope in showdown between county and area rivals

MARIETTA - Walton scored a big Area 6AAAAA victory as the No. 5-ranked Lady Raiders defeated No. 3 Pope, 1-0, in a battle of area and east Cobb rivals Friday at Raider Valley.

Julia Holz's goal in the second half was all the scoring Walton (10-1-1, 6-1) needed as the Lady Raiders handed Pope (12-1, 8-1) its first loss of the season.

"It was a very big win in the (area) standings," Walton coach Bruce Wade said. "A lot of the girls on both teams know each other and Pope is a big rival, so it was an emotional win."

Pope coach Jim Haskin said the game was an example of how tough Area 6AAAAA is.

"When you play in (an area) as tough as ours, you have to expect to lose a couple of games," Haskin said. "We have to keep getting better."

Goalkeeper Madison Ryan made seven saves for Walton.

The decisive goal came with 10:45 remaining in the game when Holz took a cross from Kianna Nicholson and blasted the ball past Pope goalkeeper Michelle Krengel to give Walton a 1-0 lead it would hold for the rest of the contest.

The first half was an evenly-fought battle between Walton and Pope, as the two teams had several near-misses.

Pope nearly got on the scoreboard first as Ryann Davie launched a shot that narrowly slid just to the left of the goal with 31:35 remaining in the first half.

Walton had a scoring attempt that fell just short with 30:00 remaining in the half as Nicholson took a cross from Erin Holt and took a shot that went just left of the goal.

Meggie Graham tried to get Walton on the scoreboard with 15:16 left in the first half, but Krengel deflected her long shot.

With 4:02 left in the first half, Walton's Sara Nourachi drove towards the goal and appeared to have a chance to put the Lady Raiders in the lead, but the ball was knocked away by a Pope defender.

Krengel kept Walton off the scoreboard at the end of the first half with a couple of leaping saves off long shots by Graham, the first one coming with 1:30 remaining and the second one with 35 seconds left.

Krengel deprived Walton of another opportunity midway through the second half as she blocked a shot by Nicholson off of a cross from Nourachi with 21:38 left in the game.

Walton continued on the offensive the rest of the game, with Holz's goal giving the Lady Raiders all they needed for the win.

"In the second half, we played more disciplined soccer and that put us in a good position," Wade said.

Said Haskin, "(Walton) did a good job of possessing the ball and we didn't take advantage of the opportunities that we had."

Walton has five regular season games remaining, with the Lady Raiders playing on the road against Area 6AAAAA foes Wheeler on Tuesday and Milton on Thursday, then hosting Marietta in a non-area game April 12 before closing the season at home with area games against Lassiter (April 14) and Northview (April 16).

Pope has only two regular season games left, with the Lady Greyhounds closing the regular season with area games against Milton on Monday and Roswell on Wednesday.

It seemed no one on Walton's side thought Connor Barbaree's goal in the 11th minute was going to be enough to close out the east Cobb County school's third state championship.

Coach Bucky Boozer? "No."

Defender Andrew Newcity? "I didn't at first. They came out really strong."

Barbaree? "Honestly, I didn't think so."

But there they were, with the one-goal lead over Harrison in the closing minutes of the Class AAAAA state title game, and sophomore goalkeeper Ben Yabrow had an axe to grind. An admonishment from his father was enough to spur him on to six saves in Walton's 1-0 win over its county rival.

Yabrow's dad pointed out before the game that he was the only goalkeeper left who didn't have a shutout in the playoffs.

Even he had his doubts.

"The whole second half they were parked in front of our box," Yabrow said.

Aided by two offsides calls that nullified first-half Harrison goals and a nifty bit of passing that resulted in Barbaree's score, the Raiders (17-2-2) claimed their third state title in 12 years. They won the AAAA title in 1995 and the AAAAA crown in 2002.

Afterward, there were fireworks set off from the Walton side of Harrison's stadium.

"That's what we've been working for all year," Newcity said.

It took just 18 seconds for this one to turn contentious. That's when Harrison's Matt Spoon had an apparent goal --- a header from just outside the goalie box --- wiped out by an offsides call.

Then came Barbaree's goal. Walton's Cameron Cooksey settled the ball on the right side and fed it to the middle. Mario Burstein tapped it out to the left of the 18-yard box to an open Barbaree, whose shot found the net at the upper-right corner.

The Hoyas (19-3) had another apparent goal wiped out in the 17th minute when Austin Steele found the net but was whistled for the offsides.

Harrison had five other chances at the equalizer.

"We kept pushing and pushing, and we had plenty of opportunities," Harrison coach Matt Davenport said. "That last 10 minutes was where we've come on strong all year. We just couldn't find the net."

Ranked Rivals - #4 Walton Shuts out #3 Wheeler
Thursday, March 29, 2007 By Greg Oshust Marietta Daily Journal Sports Writer MARIETTA - Wheeler came into its game with Walton on Wednesday as the higher ranked team in the state, with the Wildcats ranked third and the Raiders fourth. However, Walton showed why it is the defending Class AAAAA state champion as the Raiders scored a convincing 4-0 victory over the upstart Wildcats in an Area 6AAAAA game at Corky Kell Stadium. Walton asserted its dominance early with three goals in the first half and were able to shut down Wheeler's potent offensive attack. "We played a very good game," Walton coach Bucky Boozer said. "Wheeler is a very good team, but we defended them well." Wheeler coach Tom Russell was impressed with Walton's performance. "They overpowered us," Russell said. "We had a lot of opportunities early and we couldn't take advantage, but it could be worse." Walton (9-2-1, 6-2) is now tied for third place in Area 6AAAAA with Centennial, while Wheeler (11-2-1, 7-2) remains in second place, one game behind 6AAAAA leader Chattahoochee. It was a balanced effort for Walton, with Daniel Gnecco, Marco Ferrara, Timehin Sonubi and Taylor White scoring one goal each for the Raiders. Wheeler missed on its first serious scoring opportunity as Dheigo Lima's shot was deflected by Walton goalkeeper Ben Yabrow with 33:02 remaining in the first half. The Wildcats again appeared to be on the verge of scoring only a minute later as DouDou Toure took a pass from his brother Alhagi Toure and used some slick dribbling to get past the Walton defense before his shot was stopped by Yabrow with 32 minutes left. Less than 2 minutes later, Gnecco drove the ball towards the goal and was approached by Wheeler goalkeeper Panashe Nkehiro, but Gnecco lifted a shot over Nkehiro's head and the ball dropped into the goal with 30:41 to give Walton a 1-0 lead. Walton struck again a little over 10 minutes later as Ferrera nailed a shot into the upper right corner of the goal with 19:53 remaining in the first half to increase the Raiders' advantage to 2-0. Wheeler narrowly missed on a couple of chances to get on the scoreboard as Lucas Sousa's shot hit the upper goalpost with 8:30 remaining and Mikey Harrell's shot went just over the goal with 4:42 left. However, Walton was able to connect a little over three minutes later as Sonubi fired a shot into the left corner of the goal with 1:38 left in the first half for a 3-0 lead, a lead the Raiders held at halftime. Wheeler immediately went on the attack at the beginning of the second half as DouDou Toure's shot with 38:03 remaining in the game was grabbed by Yabrow and Alhagi Toure's scoring attempt with 36:00 left went just to the right. However, Walton was successful on its first scoring opportunity of the second half as Taylor White headed the ball into the goal with 33:00 left in the game to give the Raiders their final margin of victory.

Raiders on the run - Shutout of Wheeler keeps top-ranked Walton rolling

Meanwhile, Wheeler (7-5, 6-3), which was tied for second place with Lassiter and Pope in the Area 6AAAAA going into the game, fell into a tie for fourth with Milton.

Walton coach Bruce Wade said his team came out ready to play and were very effective in taking advantage of scoring opportunities.

"The girls were focused from the start," Wade said. "We had a lot of respect for Wheeler, having beaten Lassiter and we were ready for them. We finished our chances and that was huge."

After a slow start by both teams, Walton broke through when Vanderbroek scored on a header off an assist by Secunda with 26:36 remaining in the first half to give the Lady Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Walton increased its lead when Graham slipped the ball into the right corner of the goal with 6:44 left in the first half for a 2-0 Lady Raider advantage.

Less than 2 minutes later, Secunda blasted a free kick into the goal to give Walton its eventual margin of victory.

Walton and Wheeler each had one more scoring opportunity in the first half, with Wheeler's Caroline Long's long shot hitting the crossbar with 4:00 remaining in the first half and Meggie Graham's attempt with 2:04 left also hitting the crossbar.

Walton wasn't able to duplicate its first half offensive success as Wheeler made some adjustments on defense and were able to keep the Lady Raiders scoreless in the second half.

"In the second half, we played real well," Wheeler coach Ray Furstein said. "We made some adjustments and fixed a few things."

Said Wade, "We made some changes and experimented with some things and it didn't quite work out. Wheeler came out more aggressive and they did a good job on defense."

However, Walton was just as adept on defense, with Vanderbroek deflecting shots by Kendall Michaelis with 15:33 remaining in the game and Stacey Leung with 13:05 left.

Now, Walton is focused on its big game with rival Pope, with a win giving the Lady Raiders the 6AAAAA title and the top seed from the region in the state playoffs.

"It's a very big game for us," Wade said. "The girls on both teams know each other and it's a big rivalry."

Right on time - Walton breaks tie to upend Collins Hill
Published: April 26, 2007 By David Friedlander Marietta Daily Journal Sports Writer MARIETTA - Timing was everything for Walton's boys soccer team Wednesday night. At least, it was for the most critical plays in the Raiders' first-round Class AAAAA state playoff game against Collins Hill. The No. 4 Raiders scored on two perfectly-timed plays, the second one on Derrick Kemph's right-footed tap in with just under 21 minutes left, to come away with a 2-1 victory over the Eagles at Raider Valley. "It wasn't our best effort," said Walton (13-2-1) coach Bucky Boozer after his team advanced to the second round to take on third-ranked Parkview next week at the Big Orange Jungle. "If we're going to progress (in the playoffs), we've got to step it up. But we got some good performances, and the bottom line in the playoffs is advancing." The Raiders' execution was hit or miss all evening, but when it hit, it usually led to an aesthetically-pleasant goal because of perfect timing. The first came midway through the first half, when Jin Woo Seo sent a cross from the right wing into the penalty area. Taylor White immediately tipped the ball forward to Thomas Trotter, who stayed onside line enough before shooting past his defender and making a move to beat Collins Hill goalkeeper Jesse Garbowski to put Walton up 1-0 with 21:26 left in the first half. But despite dominating possession most of the half, a Walton breakdown on a counterattack allowed Collins Hill to pull back into the game. Jeff Hodges was in position to stop Alex Orellana on a left-wing run, but his clearing attempt bounced off the Eagles midfielder and right to Kyle Livingston, who sped past an out-of-position Raider defense and scored to tie the game 1-1 with 14:13 left in the half. "We didn't clean that ball up right," Boozer said. "And (Collins Hill) capitalized and scored." The goal also gave the Eagles plenty of momentum, especially for the rest of the half and the early moments of the second half. "To get that goal kind of rekindled our kids' hope and got them back in the game," Collins Hill coach Stan Carpenter said. That hope would have grown even more if not for a matter of inches, as Livingston bounced a loose ball off the back post in the 35th minute, while Juan Giraldo also found iron off a set piece about 8 minutes into the second half. Having benefited from the narrow escapes, the Raiders gathered themselves and struck on another timing play. This time, Connor Barbaree sent a long cross from the far left wing all the way across the penalty area and across the mouth of the goal. Once again, a Raider patiently waited to remain onside before zipping past his man, and Kemph finished the play by tapping the ball inside the back post to put Walton up 2-1 with 20:42 left to play. "Connor played an incredible ball," Kemph said of his fifth goal of the season. "I was just looking to run across and see if I could get behind (the defense) without getting offside. I knew if I could get my foot on it, I could score." Collins Hill wouldn't quit, as the Eagles got several scoring chances in the final 8 minutes of the game. But the best of those chances - including John Quay's blast off a turnover, a pair of shots from 25 yards out by Alex Reyes and David Holm and a corner kick in the final minute - either just missed the mark or were turned away by Walton goalkeeper Ben Yabrow, which secured the win for the Raiders.

Defending state champion Walton sleepwalked through the first half in its boys soccer playoff match Wednesday at Parkview. The Raiders had only one shot on goal, and Parkview had rushed the goal and looked like the faster, more skilled team. But the Panthers, Class AAAAA champions from 2005, netted only one goal and left the door open. And Walton coach Bucky Boozer called on his big bodies to bang the door down and win 2-1 in a second-round game in Lilburn.
Boozer sent his big bodies, 6-foot-5 Taylor White and 6-2 Thomas Trotter, to the net and each scored a second-half goal off corner kicks. Trotter's goal in the 74th minute stunned the Parkview faithful in the Big Orange Jungle and sent the Raiders into the quarterfinals. "It was a game of two halves," Boozer said. "They had the first, and the second half was mostly ours. They were a little quicker to the ball, and we had to play a certain way, but our players did a great job of carrying out a tough, tactical plan." No. 4 Walton (14-2-1) did it without two key players: central defender Michael Fuller, who suffered a leg injury last week, and Cameron Cooksey, the star forward who suffered a broken leg four weeks ago. The Raiders showed a lot of heart and character to come back and knock off the No. 3 Panthers (16-3-1).
Parkview coach Michael Tolmich said his team's field defense was solid in both halves, and the offense continued to get chances. "The problem was we gave up too many set pieces, and they scored on two of them," he said. "Those are big, big bodies that they have, and if they get the ball up to them, it's tough to get it away from them."
White, who has become the Raiders' chief weapon in Cooksey's absence, scored their first goal on a header. "He's been magnificent," Boozer said of the junior midfielder/forward. "He's a super player, and I think he's got a great future."
White's goal, with the assist from Marco Ferrara on a corner kick, came at the 15-minute mark. Ten minutes later, Trotter corraled a low corner kick from Ferrara and slid one past Parkview keeper Daniel Bullock for the game-winner.
The Panthers dominated the first half, but their only score came in the 25th minute when Kofi Gwayu took a Blake Brettschneider pass from 15 yards out and lifted the ball over the head of Walton keeper Ben Yabrow.
Tolmich said the match most likely will be one of the best in the tournament. "You want to play the best, and I think we held our own. We did a great job, but the ball rolled their way, and it was unfortunate for us," he said.

KENNESAW - The Class AAAAA state boys soccer championship was on the line the last time Walton and Harrison met, with the Raiders edging the Hoyas 1-0 at Hoya Stadium to win the state title last May.
The result was completely different when the two Cobb County powerhouses met again at Hoya Stadium on Wednesday as No. 2 state ranked Harrison scored a goal in the first half and pulled away with three more goals in the second half to beat No. 4 Walton 4-0 in the AAAAA state semifinals.
Harrison (18-1-2) now advances to its second consecutive Class AAAAA state championship game appearance, with the Hoyas going on the road to play No. 1 Chattahoochee, a 4-3 winner over North Cobb in the other semifinal game, on Saturday in Johns Creek.
"I'm very proud of the guys," Harrison coach Jonathan Gross said. "Since the beginning of the year, it's been our goal to make it back to the state finals. We've talked about raising the level of our game and I feel like we couldn't have played any harder."
For Gross, the difference from last year's state championship game was that Harrison was simply better able to take advantage of scoring opportunities.
"The problem last year is we didn't finish chances," Gross said. "This time, we had great chances and we were able to finish them."
Eric Cobleigh and Alex Evert scored two goals each to provide all of the offense for Harrison, with Cobleigh scoring the first two goals of the game and then assisting on Evert's first goal.
"Eric gave us a big boost with those two goals and then he assisted on Alex Evert's goal to help us put the game away," Gross said.
For Cobleigh, Harrison's performance was a big improvement over last year's state title game.
"We played way better than last year," Cobleigh said. "The senior and juniors really stepped up and led the way for us."
The loss ended Walton's quest for a second straight state championship as the Raiders finish the season with a 15-3-1 record.
The absence of standouts Cameron Cooksey and Michael Fuller, who have missed the entire state playoffs due to injuries, plus the loss of defender Andrew Natalino to an injury early in the second half were among the factors working against Walton.
"We had a couple of good chances in the first half that we weren't able to take advantage of," Walton coach Bucky Boozer said. "We lost Andrew Natalino and we were playing without Cameron Cooksey and Michael Fuller and that was just too much to overcome. Harrison is a great team and they've got some big guns, so they were very deserving of the win."
Walton stymied a couple of Harrison scoring chances early in the first half, with Jeff Hodges knocking away a shot by Evert with 26:22 remaining in the first half and a header by Jeffery Majors being deflected by a group of Walton defenders with 26:22 left in the half.
The Raiders also saw a couple of scoring chances fall short as Daniel Gnecco's breakaway shot was stopped by Harrison goalkeeper Patrick Martineau with 13:10 left in the first half and a long shot by Connor Barbaree went just over the goal with 12:25 left.
Cobleigh finally broke the ice as he nailed a long shot into the upper left corner of the goal with 10:33 left in the first half to give Harrison a 1-0 lead.
Cobleigh added to Harrison's lead with 16:43 remaining in the game as he broke towards the goal and evaded a couple of Walton defenders before blasting his shot into the goal to provide the Hoyas with a 2-0 advantage.
Harrison wasted little time to get its third goal as Evert took a pass from Cobleigh and scored with 13:24 left in the game.
Evert scored again with eight seconds left in the game to wrap up Harrison's win and a return trip to the state finals for the Hoyas.
