SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Elon Phoenix finished the regular season with a record of 7-0 in conference play and placed four members on the 2008 Southern Conference All-Conference First Team. Four additional members of the Phoenix garnered second-team honors while junior forward Justin Wyatt was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year. Head coach Darren Powell was tabbed the 2008 Coach of the Year in voting done by the league’s head coaches. Furman forward Coleton Henning was named the Freshman of the Year. Wyatt was one of four representatives from Elon on the all-conference first team, joining midfielder Erfan Imeni, defenseman Steven Kinney and goalkeeper Kyle Boerner. Henning was also a first-team all-conference selection along with Furman teammate Patrick Murray. Appalachian State placed three members on the all-conference first team as forward Arie Muniz, defenseman Paul Pessina and goalkeeper Collin Taylor were all selected for first-team accolades. As a result of a tie in the voting, the first team featured 12 members, including Davidson’s Alex Caskey, UNC Greensboro’s Jokull Elisabertarson and College of Charleston’s Wes Knight. Elon forward Aaron Parker, along with midfielder Clint Collins, defenseman Will Mason and goalkeeper Clint Irwin were named to the all-conference second team. College of Charleston, Furman and UNC Greensboro each placed two members on the second team. Forward Kareem Yearwood and midfielder Branko Gavric represented the Cougars, while Furman’s Warren Creavalle and Jonathan Collier also garnered second-team plaudits. Tebatso Manyama and E.J. O’Keeffe from UNC Greensboro were named to the second team, along with Appalachian State’s Juan Obregon. Furman placed four members on the 2008 All-Freshman Team, as Henning was joined by teammates Eric Cobleigh, Creavalle and defenseman Chris Klute. The ASU Mountaineers placed three members on the all-freshman team as Taylor was joined by midfielder Mark Bridges forward Sean Dreybus. Davidson’s Greg McNamara and Hunter Hayes also earned spots on the all-freshman team, along with College of Charleston’s Sean de Silva and Elon’s James Carroll. The 2008 Southern Conference men’s soccer tournament begins Saturday, November 8. Furman plays host to UNC Greensboro at 1:00 p.m., while top-seeded Elon entertains Wofford at 7:00 p.m. College of Charleston visits Appalachian State at 7:00 p.m. The final first-round matchup pits Davidson at Georgia Southern Sunday (Nov. 9) at noon.

Mario Burstein Selected for 2006 All-South Regional team
Congatulations to Mario Burstein, a 2006 graduate of Walton High and member of the 2006 Men's state championship team, who was selected by the NCAA Adidas All-America Committee as a member of the 2006 All-South Regional team. Mario currently plays soccer at the University of South Carolina.
