Walnut California, with a population of 30,004 from the 2000 census, now has 12 boys who are 2009 World Champions! The Walnut Valley Pony Baseball Bronco-11 team squared-off Saturday, Aug 1, in a championship game against a team that had already beaten them once - the previously unbeaten team from Tijuana, Mexico. But the tough, scrappy, and talented team from Walnut earned a 6-3 win to claim the Pony League Bronco-11 World Championship!
The championship game played in Ironbridge Park Stadium of Chesterfield, Virginia began with Walnut striking for three runs in the top of the second as Michael Mora, Jacob Martinez, and Steven Canedo scored on RBI’s from Steven Canedo, Anthony Guardado, and Sergio Robles Jr. Jason Juarez and Mora reached on singles, Robles doubled, Guardado hit a sacrifice fly, and Martinez reached on a fielder’s choice in the inning.
Tijuana struck back in the bottom of the second, but only managed one run on three hits, leaving one on base. In the third, Tijuana struck again for another run on a hit and an error. Walnut got that run back in the top of the fourth when Steven Canedo homered. In the bottom of the fifth, Tijuana scored another run making it a 4-3 game.
The score stayed close till the top of the seventh when Steven Canedo walked and stole second. Anthony Guardado then singled, moving Canedo to third. Guardado then promptly stole second. A wild pitch allowed Canedo to score, and a sacrifice fly by Robles scored Guardado who had advanced to third on the wild pitch that scored Canedo. In the bottom of the seventh, Jason Juarez retired the side with two ground-outs and a decisive strike-out against Tijuana's number two hitter, who was batting .455 coming into the game.
Juarez pitched a complete game 6-hitter to throttle the Mexican team. He struck out five, and did not walk anyone, while forcing 11 ground outs.
Congratulations on a great game and a great season to the Bronco-11 team, the parents, the coaches and Walnut Valley Pony Baseball.
