Wall succumbs to CBA in round 2, 3-0
The CBA Colts squads are known for their smarts and skills, not to mention their ability to be opportunistic when the situation dictates. And opportunistic the Colts became when they managed several 2-on-1's in a closely played 1st period. The 2 quick CBA tallies set the table for their patented dump and chase game in a contest the Crimson Knights played well in but not quite well enough to pull out thus ending an impressive 8 game unbeaten streak. Though behind early, this scrappy bunch still managed some attack of their own - a clang off the pipes, several near-breakaway passes just missing the mark, and a couple of lost chances in the 'house', not to mention some strong goaltending, might have gone in their favor to suddenly tighten the game. But lady-luck had no such things in mind for the Crimson today. Even Wall's trademark ability to find a goal here and there at crucial times would fail them when the CBA netminder simply couldn't be solved. A somewhat meaningless tally by CBA in the 3rd would set the scoreboard final, but Wall continued to press for a goal looking for a spark. At game's close, the loss would be hard to swallow. Still looking back, it was a heck of a good season for the young squad. With a schedule earmarked by the Shore's best in CBA, RBC, SJV, and a host of other squads, this group proved itself to have more than enough skill and mettle to compete in winning their fair share of games. So, we thank them for all the fun this season, but man, I can't wait for next year - it ought to be really exciting!

Wall beats Middletown South 1-0 in 1st round of playoffs.....
All season long, Wall and South had battled in some of the closest, most hard fought games. Being the 1st round of the playoffs, it only served to up the ante, so it was no surprise to see both clubs play their own games to essentially a standoff. But Wall had been playing very good hockey lately and had ridden their strengths to 7 unbeaten matches. Leave it to the Velke, McCarthy, Fitch line, which had been wreaking havoc on opponents all season long, to find a goal somewhere in their arsenal midway thru the 2nd period. In a scrum in front of the South goalie, McCarthy would outduel the defense to slide in the only goal of the match. Tight checking, strong play on thepuck, and some especially key netminding then kicked in preserving the precarious 1 goal lead till game's close. Wall now plays the CBA Colts in round 2 slated for 1:45p at Gold Coast Arena. Come cheer on your players!

Wall JV crush Toms River East, 8-0, to close regular season
Despite playing shorthanded defensively due to sickness and injury, the Crimson Knights extended their undefeated streak to 7 games (4W, 3T). Reports from the parents noted that all the players skated well, played strong defensively, held their net well, and flashed some of their moxy in showing no mercy on the opponent. Wall tagged TRE for 8 tallies to close out the regular season on an awesome streak at 10-7-4. "Not too shabby" as the saying goes, especially when considering the level of competition in their division. The Crimson Knights are now looking forward to the playoffs. Congrats on a VERY good regular season and Good Luck in the playoffs!

Crimson Knights tie stubborn Middletown North 3-3
While Wall was looking to add to its 6 game unbeaten streak, Middletown North was set on avenging an earlier 5-4, last second loss about a month ago. So as expected, the checking was both tight, clean, and hard throughout. Wall struck first with 4:12 gone by when Cohen (1G, 1A) fed Big Ben Dier for a snapshot and quick lead. Cohen then gathered a loose puck in the slot 2 minutes later and zipped a shot past the partially screened Lions netminder to up the lead 2-0 and close out the 1st period scoring. The Lions had seen this act before though and rallied to halve their deficit 4 minutes into the 2nd. Wall would respond with a tally by Ciccarelli, who grabbed another loose puck left in the slot by the Lions 'D', to regain the 2 goal cushion. North then opened the 3rd looking to reclaim the momentum. With nearly 5 mins gone, their hard work would pay off when a scrum in front of Gianni would result in a Lions goal to cut the lead to 3-2 and a suddenly uncomfortable 1 goal lead for Wall. As luck would have it, but with time playing their enemy, North's power play would be given a shot at heroics when Wall took a debatable tripping penalty with under 2 on the clock. With time running short, Wall was suddenly under seige in their own zone. Several failed clearing attempts cost them dearly when a Lions forechecker fought off a Wall defenseman in the corner and zipped a quick pass thru traffic into the slot. An unattended North weakside winger would capitalize when he crashed the net, settled the puck and roofed the tying goal with 3.5 seconds on the clock. Though extending their streak, Wall nonetheless left the sheet with the bittersweet taste of a tie rather than a win. Toms River East comes into WSA on Monday for the regular season finale - see you there.... ;-)

Streaking Crimson Knights JV post 5-2 win over Jackson
The Crimson Knights continued their strong play against Jackson, extending their undefeated streak to 6 games. Fitch, again flashing his jets, corralled a McCarthy pass and jump-started the scoring with a pretty shot that found net. Not too much later, Colabro would whistle a blistering shot past the helpless Jackson netminder to expand the lead. Jackson would recover though to cut their deficit in half. Wall regained the edge by playing strong on their forecheck and attack. With the offense working their cycling, a puck found it's way to Diaz, who loaded up and fired on net from the blueline to re-up the ante 3-1. Cohen then took advantage of several Jackson 'D' with some nifty neutral zone footwork and garnered himself a goal to go up 4-1. Jackson would tally to close the 2nd but would come no closer than 4-2. Fitch then popped his second of the night to create a more favorable cushion in the 3rd period for a 5-2 lead with 5 remaining in the contest to close out the scoring. Another strong effort, another good win.....

Wall's JV outduels a tough St John Vianney in 5-4 win.....
Another Catholic school, this time the Lancers, hosted Wall at WSA looking to end the Crimson Knight's undeafeated streak of 4 games. As expected, familiarity played true as both squads looked to gain an edge on the sheet. Wall struck first on the speed of Fitch and his nifty shooting 2 minutes in. Not a minute later, Quinn would deposit one past the stunned Lancer netminder to up the ante 2-0. Vianney regrouped to notch one minutes later on some back-and-forth play. Taking advantage of some of his speed, and luck, McCarthy then tallied another with under 3 in the period to go up 3-1 on a helper by Velke. The Lancers then retalliated to cut their deficit to 1 goal when they scored with under a minute remaining to close out the frame at 3-2. Saint John's maintained their momentum by grabbing a loose puck and firing on net for a quick one to tie the game at 3-3 just tics off the clock to start the 2nd period. Looking to regroup, the Knight's luck went ever so south on a deflected Lancer shot that managed to find home for a 4-3 lead. Wall then regrabbed the 'mo' by playing smart defensively and across the neutral zone, narrowly missing on several opportunities in net-mouth scrambles. The Knights hard work paid off when Wehrhann fired on net to retie the game at 4-4 with 5:47 on the clock. With time running short it looked like another tie would ensue, but some smart blueline play led to a nice tip-in by Cohen when Diaz fired on net, for a 5-4 lead and game win. The Knights look to continue their streak against Jackson on Super Bowl Sunday.

The JV squad shuts down Monsignor Donovan 2-0
Wall played the Griffins in a last minute match looking to continue its strong play. And well they performed as they took Mon Don's best shot all game long. The entire team took advantage on their attack while playing strong 'D and secured a well-deserved shutout in the process. The scoring was led by McCarthy and supported by Velke on the tightly contested 'sheet'. Emmons, playing strong in net, garnered the blanking of a pretty good foe, despite all the chippy play around him. Next up is SJ Vianney on Sat the 31st @ WSA.

JV Knights blitz Toms River North for 8-1 win...
After playing 2 ties in a row, the JV squad took matters in hand and took their furstrations out on Toms River North. The one-sided affair saw Velke garner his first hat-trick of the season on some nifty shooting. Cohen and Quinn nearly matched Velke when each scored 2 goals to up the scoreboard. Fitch scored as well to complete the blitz of an outgunned North squad. This coming weekend sees the squad play a full slate as they take on Mon Don, Middletown North and Jackson Memorial.

Boro and Wall tie in see-saw battle, 4-4....
Point's JV consisted mostly of their varsity squad playing down so Wall knew it would take a very good effort to pull out a win. And if not for a few breaks, they likely would have stolen the victory. Big Ben Dier started the scoring netting a quick wrister minutes into the match on helpers by Zoller and Quinn. Point responded by tallying 2 goals minutes later to grab the lead 2-1. A Wall shot (my apologies to the un-named scorer) found the twine to retie the session and close it out at 2-2. Spirited play and a touch of footwork, saw Wall rally when the fleet-footed Fitch scored unassisted to regrab the lead at 3-2 and Zoller tallied on assists by Quinn and Dier to go up 4-2. But the Panthers regrouped on some sloppy play in the Wall defensive zone, by pushing a shot just past the Wall netminder with :05 remaining in the period to cut their deficit in half. Stronger play in the 3rd saw Wall recover to regain some neutral zone momentum. But Boro played opportunist when they grabbed a Wall ricocchet just outside the attack zone for a semi-breakaway. The ensuing tally knotted the match and closed the scoring at 4's. All-in-all, not a bad effort, especially given the mantra that a tie in the 'other' guys building is usually what you'd like to walk out with, if not the win. But the night's best news was probably watching the Eagles go down to the Cards......

CBA bests JV 7-2 .....
CBA played the Crimson Knights last Sunday night and played the gracious hosts for all of 2 minutes. Wall, looking to avenge an earlier loss, scored first 1:32 into the game on a Dier wrister. CBA took unkindly to giving up the first goal, and immediately went on a 4-goal scoring spree to close the 1st at 4-1. Wall then saw another unanswered tally before responding with their own effort on a rush by Fitch to see the scoreboard at 5-2. Wall's luck remained hard-luck when a blue-line slapper was gathered by the Colts and converted into a shorthander. The Colts netted 2 more in the 3rd to close the scoring. Wall looks to regroup against Point Boro next.

JV falls short to RBC in 3-0 loss...
(Your roving reporter was amiss this game but gathered some quick info from the spectatorship re. the game) RBC tagged Wall 7-1 in their first game, but found the going much tougher in their rematch. A very game effort was put forth by all the players against The Caseys. And while losing never quite sits well, the team will certainly take alot of positives into their next series of games. CBA and Point await them this coming weekend, so come out and cheer on the boys.... ;-)

JV's 'heart attack kids' strike Middletown North for 6-5 squeaker....
Wall's JV should officially be given the nickname 'heart attack kids' because it seems no lead is quite safe - not for them or the opponent. Last night's episode was a rerun of a JV Classic game played against Middletown North. North came into the match looking to avenge the earlier loss, but was immediately put on their heels when Wall's attack took charge. The deluge started when Ciccerelli popped a feed from Spencer only a minute and a half gone by into North's net. Five mins later, McCarthy blasted a puck past North's netminder garnering Velke (1G, 1A) the helper. Big Ben Dier then gathered a loose puck in the attack zone and deposited an unassisted goal to put Wall up 3-0. And just like that, someone turned off Wall's attack and turned on North's. With two minutes remaining in the period, a Middletown shot found net and was quickly followed 35 seconds later to cut the deficit to 1 goal. North began the 2nd period with the same spunk they closed the 1st. Maintaining neutral zone play and a measure of momentum, Middletown pressed on and found the back of the net to tie the game at 3. Wall then sought a momentum change by flipping goalies. Showing mettle of their own, Wall settled down and regrouped when Velke accepted Holmes' pass and pushed his shot past North's goalie to regain the lead and close the period at 4-3. The 3rd frame saw Wall extend their lead as Bruno (1G, 1A) and Fitch combined on a neat play netting Fitch a pretty goal. At 5-3, it looked like Wall had weathered the storm, only North had other ideas when their power-play cut the gap to 5-4. Oh, baby - another nail biter! Wall was then given a power-play with under 3 minutes remaining that should have put the game away, but North's luck prevailed when a Wall slapper riccocheted to a North player for a semi-breakaway resulting in a goal and a tied matched. Holy cow - what next? Wall's Bruno, taking matters into his own hands literally, flashed his speed and stickhandling prowess, by grabbing a neutral zone puck, zipping around a couple of North checkers and unleashing a wicked bottle-popper with 28.1 seconds on the clock to recapture the lead. Geepers - what more could a game give you? Well, how about the sweet sound of a North 'rocket' pinging off the far post and bounding harmlessly away with 1 second left on the clock? Wow! Wall looks to even matters against RBC this coming Sunday. See you there!

Wall takes 3rd at JV Classic with win over Jackson
Wall's JV squad rebounded quite nicely against the Jackson Memorial squad that edged them out 2 days earlier by taking the contest 5-3 and capturing 3rd in the JV Classic. Jackson found the going much tougher this time around when Wall unleashed a more physical style of play. Pat Bruno (2G, 1A) led the charge when he scored with just over 2 minutes left in the period (assists to Velke and McCarthy) to awaken the offense. Jackson managed a goal with 23.6 seconds remaining though to tie the game, close the period, and gather some momentum. Some bad luck would have Wall give up a goal when a puck slid just under a defenseman's stick and passed Emmons 2 minutes into the 2nd giving Jackson a 2-1 lead. Emmons, playing better in net every game, took offense and reacted by flashing a quick glove to stop a Jackson forward not minutes later. With just mins gone by, Wehrhahn, coming off the IR, responded by netting a sweet goal on a neat Palmer feed to re-tie the match and regain the momentum at 2's. A beautiful toe-kick save by Emmons then led to another goal at 8:36 when Colabro would bury a cannon shot on a pretty Bruno helper to retake the lead at 3-2. It was a lead that would never be relinquished. With the ice slanting in Wall's favor, Bruno then jumped on a loose biscuit in the attacking zone and buried his 2nd goal of the game with a rocket of his own. Now up 4-2, and likely having learned from past play, Wall wasted no time in dispensing the dreaded 2 goal lead. A pass from Dier to Corso garnered him an assist when Corso fired on net to give Wall a more comfortable 3 goal edge. Wall then carried play for the remainder of the game, despite giving up another Jackson goal midway through the period, to close out the match. Wall looks to continue their strong play against a well-balanced Middletown North squad this coming Sunday. Also, get-well wishes and a speedy recovery to David Ramsden, who suffered a broken collar-bone in the Middletown South game. See you on Sunday... ;-)

Middletown South eeks out win in game 3 of JV Classic
Game 3 of the JV Classic against Middletown South turned into another nail-biting affair though it didn't seem that way at game's start. Quick tallies by Velke (assisted by Colabro and O'Connor), Bruno (1G, 1A - Ciccerelli on the assist), and O'Connor (1G, 1A) put Wall up 3-0 to close the 1st period. But an alarming habit of taking penalties when least needed helped Middletown South's cause. Nearly 2 mins into the 2nd, South began their comeback with a quick strike. Not a minute later, Wall again was unable to hold off South's attack, and gave up another tally. Leading 3-2, Wall recovered when Fitch gathered a Bruno feed to hit net to regain the two goal lead midway through the session. South would not quit on the attack though as it became increasingly obvious who the hockey gods were favoring. In the 3rd period, every bounce and break went against Wall. A screened shot from the blueline and a very questionable power play goal, that even the refs said they didn't see but allowed, notched the match at 4. As fate would have it, South was then presented a gift-wrapped goal when a Wall forward zipped out of the defensive zone with 32 secs remaining. Amazingly, the Wall bench watched in disbelief as the puck remained behind in the snow for a forechecking South forward to jump on. The ensuing breakaway lead to South's final score, ending the game at 5-4, and dropping a heartbreaking loss on the stunned Wall squad. Oh well, maybe the new year will shine brighter. Wall looks to rebound on Friday as they await the final seedings. Happy New Year everyone - see you at the rink!

Jackson edges Wall 4-2 in game 2 of JV Classic.....
The Wall JV squad had been playing well lately, but as we all know, hockey's like the weather - pretty unpredictable no matter what they say. And so it was that Wall's modest streak came to an at the hands of Jackson Memorial, who played down several gifted varsity players in fielding a short handed squad. Still, there were opportunities to be had. Jackson drew first blood at the 8 minute tick to take the early lead, but Wall immediately responded. An O'Connor pass to Big Ben Dier led to an assist when Dier turned the feed into a goal at the 6:38 mark to notch the game. Five minutes later, Spencer gathered a loose neutral zone puck and netted his shot for a 2-1 lead closing out the 1st. The 2nd session turned messy though. A slew of penalties to both clubs ensued creating a sloppy period. Jackson, however, did capitalize to tie the game at 9:48 of the frame. Wall never quite recovered thanks to all the power plays and kills, entering the 3rd period with no offensive rythym. Jackson's strength became the 4-on-4 speed play of their specialty team. Having now scored two unanswered goals, Memorial countered with 2 more in the frame, again a penalty laden one for Wall, to close out the match 4-2 and skate off with the win. Wall looks to get back on-track against Middletown South, hoping to avenge an early season 3-1 loss. Game time is 9am.

Wall edges Middletown North 4-3 ....
The Gold Coast JV Classic began today for both the Wall and Middletown North JV squads. Almost freudian in nature, game 1 between the two evenly matched squads turned out to be just that - a classic. With Wall countering North's attack with rushes of their own, the game quickly spun into a back-and-forth affair. To North's chagrin, they quickly found that Wall was up for the pace. With 5 mins gone by, Cooper coralled a loose puck and fed an attacking Ciccerelli who fired and hit the back of the net. Not a minute later, Kennedy jumped on a free biscuit near the blueline and deposited a well-placed shot past North's netminder for a 2-0 lead - a lead that would close the period. With Wall now sporting the 'typically dreaded' 2 goal lead, Middletown regrouped to start the 2nd session. Awarded a power-play 3 minutes in, North capitalized to halve their deficit. Wall settled down though and was soon working their attack cycle again. The defense, playing smartly and finding their forwards on quick touches, would continue the trend when McCarthy found Spencer for a pretty 'top-shelf' score to put Wall ahead 3-1 at the 7 minute tick. But Middletown refused to go quietly when a Wall blueline blast brought North some luck minutes later. The blocked shot landed on a North player's stick kicking off a 3-on-1 attack. Wall's goaltender, Emmons, playing well in the contest, battled the attacking trio and nearly pulled off a great save, when he forced the North shot high. But the puck found just enough room under the crossbar. Despite leading 3-2, the momentum now swung towards North. Not 10 seconds into the 3rd, North zig-zagged up ice off the ensuing faceoff and slid a puck just past the outstretched Wall netminder to close the gap and tie the game. The 2 goal lead, now gone, Wall responded by going on the attack again, and again, and again. North simply wouldn't cave in, and held ice just enough to cause some havoc of their own. But just like in the Vianney game, Wall would find a way to cheat the clock. With 46 seconds remaining in the contest, defenseman Diaz picked off a loose puck in the Wall zone, and fired a cross-ice pass onto his weakside wing's tape. O'Connor, gathering the pass, took full advantage and unloaded a lazer on the helpless North goalie, who could only react to the roar when the puck flashed by giving Wall the lead, O'Connor the game winner and Diaz a pretty assist. Wow - what a shot! What a game! Wall looks to continue their streak Tuesday @ 1:30p against another tough opponent, Jackson Memorial. See you there.

Wall JV and St John Vianney battle to a 4-4 tie.....
As anticipated, St. John Vianney wasn't going to play the role of pushover despite their 0-3 record to date. Wall, on the other hand, was looking to pick up where they left off against Manasquan. And sure enough Wall made it look that way, when Ben Dier (2G, 1A) picked up a loose neutral zone puck, zipped in on the Vianney goaltender and netted a quick goal 33 seconds into the match to take the lead. But St John would not be outdone. They'd rally capitalizing on some quick plays, their power play, and a touch of luck, to grab a 4-1 lead after two frames. The start of the third played out quite differently though. Almost as if on cue, the Wall offense decided enough was enough. On a seemingly harmless play, a neat pass from defenseman Wuestneck (2 assists) to Ciccarelli would notch a goal to suddenly spice up the game with 7 minutes left to play. And spicy it got, for as we all know, a 2 goal lead is a frontrunner's nightmare waiting to happen. And sure enough, with the clock playing Wall's enemy and just creeping under the 2 minute mark, a mad dash up ice by Wall would result in a scoring opportunity scrum in front of the Vianney net. Corso, sneaking in from the point, made Vianney pay with a seeing-eye deposit when Dier, garnering himself an assist on the play, fed him the puck. So much for the 2 goal lead! With the scoreboard now precariously at 4-3, Vianney's players scrambled to hold off Wall's attack. But some quick thinking by the Wall coaching staff would test St John's mettle. With under a minute to go, and the game on the line, a timeout was called by Wall. And quite the timeout it must've been too. Winning the ensuing faceoff as well as the puck possession battles that followed, Wall quickly knocked on the door yet again. Unselfish play had been the night's mantra for Wall so it was no surpise when Wuestneck, seeing the clock ticking towards 26 seconds, unselfishly read the play and fed Big Ben Dier, rather than taking a blueline blast. And a great play it turned out to be! Dier, likely having his best game to date, gathered the pass and unloaded for his 2nd tally of the night helping to secure both the comeback and Wall's undefeated streak. Next up is the Gold Coast Arena JV Classic, where Wall is hoping to continue their success.....The Classic starts on Monday. Check the calendar for more info....

Wall JV pounds rival 'Squan 7-3.....
In much the same way a Devils - Rangers game provides one of the slumping clubs the lift they need to get ontrack, so was the case when Manasquan hosted Wall last night at Gold Coast Arena. Wall's superior speed was immediately evident as the ice slanted for nearly the entire first period in their favor, and quite honestly, for most of the game. But it would be the Warriors that would draw first blood on a slapper from above the right circle past Emmons who was starting his 2nd game of the season in net. Wall would have none of that though as they stepped up their attack. They retaliated quickly depositing several very pretty give-and-go goals to put their netminder at ease allowing him to settle into the game. With the defense nicely setting up the offense through the neutral zone, the Crimson Knights rang shots off posts, did their best Gretzky immitations with backdoor plays and dominated the sheet taking complete advantage of the Warriors throughout the remaining frames. When it was all-said-and-done, the Knights posted a 7-3 win against their archrival, and in the process presented netminder Emmons his first official win as a high school goalie. As is the case many times in the NHL, games between rivals can often lead to a streak of good fortune with the hockey gods for the winner. Hopefully, the Knights will find that to be true and will look for more of the same against a strong St. John Vianney squad ...

Wall JV succumbs to Middletown South ....
In a game played more tightly than the score might indicate, a favored Middletown South squad capitalized on their breaks to gain a 3-1 victory on the young, improving Knights. The 1st frame proved both teams to be fairly matched with both playing fairly solid defensively and on the backchecks. Offensively, neither squad played poorly, yet both attacks fell short of solving the goaltenders with each posting only 3 shots on net to close the period. The 2nd session took a turn in South's favor though when a bouncing puck found it's way through the neutral zone and turned into a nice goal on an upclose shot on the Wall netminder for a 1-0 lead. Wall responded by outshooting South 9-5 in the period only to see the South goalie stand tall against the Knight's surge. With Wall pressing the attack in the 3rd, South again would capitalize with a burst of speed, leading to a goal and some much needed breathing room. Still, Wall skated hard hoping to change their luck. Now behind in tallies 2-0, a pretty feed from Velke to Bruno would suddenly awaken the Knight's when Bruno deposited the pass to halve the deficit. But as lady luck would have it, South would score minutes later when a puck squeezed between several Wall players onto a South stick for a quick score essentially ending Wall's bid for a comeback and finalizing the scoresheet at 3-1 in South's favor. A tough loss to a game opponent - and another game that the Wall team will surely learn from.

CBA secures win.....
The Wall JV players knew they had their hands full entering last night's game against this particular foe. For years, the CBA squads branded themselves an elite organization with its excellent play and last night they continued that tradition exhibiting very strong play and proving their mettle, in securing a 7-0 win at WSA. The Wall players fought throughout though. The squad did their best on the attack, played strong defense, backchecked hard, and even laid several monster bodychecks on the CBA players all to no avail. It would simply take alot more than that to beat this opponent. CBA, on the other hand, enjoyed the slanted ice, and even a 5-on-3, firing all kinds of bouncing pucks, screen shots, and lazers at the Wall netminders from angles everywhere on the sheet, eventually skating off in accustomed fashion - with the 'W'. Wall, having gained another game of experience, looks to rebound against a game Middletown South team this Saturday. Go Wall !
