CAVC 14 Win in Richmond

The Charlottesville Area Volleyball Club U14 (Team Boom) won its first volleyball tournament of the year on Saturday, April 19, 2008, at the Richmond Volleyball Club. Team Boom finished undefeated during the tournament.  The day started with two pools of 4 teams, with Team Boom playing in a pool that included Fredericksburg Juniors, Apex Green (Stafford County), and RVC Zonal. Team Boom captured first place in the morning pool winning 8 games and losing only once.  The team was lead by the serving of Rae Long and Jessica Block, the hitting of Elena Price, Allie Nicholson, and Cabell Williams, and the defense of Taylor Hudgins and Ivy Morgan.  Playoffs started in the afternoon with Team Boom facing RVC Regional in a best of 3 semifinal. Team Boom easily won the first game 25-12, but they fell behind in the second game eventually losing 25-16. This set up a heart-stopping, back-and-forth third game that Team Boom pulled out 15-13. Rae Long and Jessica Block again led the way with strong serving, and Taylor Hudgins and Ivy Morgan provided timely defense.  Heather Clarke, Emma Trentanove, and Jessica Block provided key sets throughout the match, and Christina Garwood and Laura Bergin made some key defensive saves. With the win Team Boom moved onto the finals to face the #1 seed from the other morning pool – Apex Blue. Team Boom started out strong taking a lead of 18-11, but Apex fought back tying the game at 23.  Team Boom took the last two points to pull out the first game.  Game two turned into a back-and-forth affair with both teams taking small leads.  Team Boom pulled away scoring the final 4 points of the game to win 25-19 and win the tournament.  Wellesley Cardwell, Emma Trentanove, and Rae Long provided strong serving and defensive saves in the final game, and Taylor Hudgins, Ivy Morgan, and Cabell Williams provided solid returns against some strong servers.  Team Boom is coached by Robert Rhodes and Beth Shelton.  Team Boom finishes their season with a tournament in Hampton, VA, on May 3rd.
