Young Gunz Blaze To Consecutive Tournament Championships
On Sunday Feb 17, the Young Gunz won the The Western Albemarle Invitational 17's tournament by beating the Salem 17's team in the Championship while going undefeated for the day. Kara Elder, Sarah Deal, Laura Gomez, and Kayla Walker led the attack by registering blistering kills all day long. Abby Hendrix and Meg Carpenter dished out numerous assists during the day while Sarah Harper and Hanna Lawson contributed significantly on defense and at the service line. The Young Gunz victory at Western Albemarle, gave them back to back tournament championships, after going undefeated at JMU on the 5th of February. The Gunz are now 17-1 on the season in match play and ranked #1 in the Old Dominion Region. They will be back in action at U.Va. on March 1st. The Young Gunz are coached by Mark Ragland.
Apocalypse wins JO Tournament at Western
CAV’s U-16 team, “Apocalypse,” won their age division in the Western Albemarle tournament in Crozet on Sunday, Feb. 17, after defeating Staunton Storm, Heart of Virginia, VEER Jrs., and the Blacksburg Asteroids.
Ali Miles and Chastity Lacy spearheaded the Apocalypse aerial assault with 14 kills each. Also posting strong numbers in the kill department were Mandy Kline (10), Kristen Pack (7), and Brittney Wagner (7). Kline recorded a team-high 17 aces from the service line.
Leading the team in assists were setters Riley Martin with 30 and Megan Adams with 18. The team’s Libero, Elizabeth Via, was a defensive standout, registering 10 digs on the day. Katie Weatherill knocked down 4 kills and added 2 stuff blocks to her season total. Ana “The Hammer” Asher drilled 5 kills.
Amanda Gough and Kellen Haley were sidelined with injuries but hope to return soon. Apocalypse will next see action in the CAVC tourney at the University of Virginia on March 1. The team is coached by Lance Rogers and Lauren Dickson.
CAV’s other 17’s team and 13’s team also competed at Western the same day. CAV is hosting 6 courts of volleyball at UVA on March 1st and 2nd, 3 each at Memorial Gym and Slaughter Rec Center where over 50 teams from Tidewater to Roanoke will be competing in ages from 13 to 18’s.
