Open Tryouts Information

Bruins Open Tryouts

The rising 12u Virginia Bruins will be holding OPEN tryouts for the Fall 2008 season.  We are looking to carry 10-12 full-time players.  Part-time players, if any, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  To be considered for a roster spot, each player and family must be able to commit to two-a-week practices from March – July (Spring) and September – November (Fall), as well as indoor winter conditioning and training camps in January and February.  August and December are generally “off” months.  In addition to practices, the Bruins also participate in USSSA, Triple Crown, CABA, AAU, and ECTB-sanctioned leagues and tournaments on weekends, including many holiday weekends.  Travel is usually no more than a 1 hour commute each way, but we do sometimes travel to tournaments that require a hotel stay (Newport News, Myrtle Beach, Cooperstown, etc.).  The time and financial commitments involved with travel baseball are much greater than those for recreational baseball (Little League, Cal Ripken, etc.).  Players and families who cannot fully commit to the schedule outlined above need not tryout, and may be removed from the roster after being selected if the demands prove to be too great.

Open tryouts for the 12u Virginia Bruins are as follows:

Saturday, July 12th, 10:00am – 1:00pm @ Freedom HS

10:00am – 10:15am:  Players arrive and warm-up (stretch, jog, throw)

10:15am – 10:30am:  30-yard dash (timed) – each player runs twice

10:30am – 11:00am:  All players take 3 ground balls and 3 fly balls in right field and throw to third base

11:00am – 11:15am:  Break

11:15am – 11:45am:  All players take 9 ground balls at SS (3 straight, 3 forehand, 3 backhand) and throw to first base

11:45am – 12:00pm:  Catcher pop times

12:00pm – 1:00pm:  Live hitting and bullpen sessions with pitchers & catchers

Sunday, July 13th, 10:00am - 1:00pm @ Freedom HS
(Sunday's tryout will be lead by Mike Colangelo)

Freedom High School
15201 Neabsco Mills Road
Woodbridge, VA 22191

Anyone wanting to be considered for a roster spot on the 12u Virginia Bruins must attend both tryout sessions.  If you are unable to make one or both of these tryouts, contact Ray McInerney by e-mail at ray@virginiabruins.com or by phone at 703-878-4149 (H) or 703-595-6013 (C).

How will the players be evaluated?

Pitchers
They will throw bullpens (no hitters) and be evaluated on velocity, location, off-speed, and mechanics.  If pitchers are also position players, they can be evaluated at that as well.  Pitchers will also take batting practice and run (home to first, timed).  Hitting evaluations will include mechanics, bat speed, power, and ability to make contact.

Catchers
They will catch bullpens and take pop times (throws to second base).  They will be evaluated on their receiving, blocking, and throwing (quickness and strength).  Catchers will also take batting practice and run (home to first, timed).  Hitting evaluations will include mechanics, bat speed, power, and ability to make contact.

Infielders
They will take ground balls at deep short and throw across the field to first base.  They will be evaluated on their mechanics(glove work, foot work), and throwing (accuracy and strength).  Position players will also take batting practice and run (home to first, timed).  Hitting evaluations
will include mechanics, bat speed, power, and ability to make contact.

Outfielders
They will take fly balls in right field and throw to third base.  They will be evaluated on their mechanics (read on balls, how they catch ball, and foot work), and throwing (accuracy and strength).  Position players will also take batting practice and run (home to first, timed).  Hitting evaluations will include mechanics, bat speed, power, and ability to make contact.

Baseball Myths

1. The batter cannot be called out for interference if he is in the batter's box. BATTER BOX INTERFERENCE RULE MYTH The batter's box is not a safety zone. A batter could be called out for interference if the umpire judges that interference could or should have been avoided. The batter is protected while in the box for a short period of time. After he has had time to react to the play he could be called for interference if he does not move out of the box and interferes with a play. Many people believe the batter's box is a safety zone for the batter. It is not. The batter MAY be called out for interference although he is within the box. The key words, impede, hinder, confuse or obstruct apply to this situation. An umpire must use good judgment. The batter cannot be expected to disappear. If he has a chance to avoid interference after he has had time to react to the situation and does not, he is guilty. If he just swung at a pitch, or had to duck a pitch and is off-balance, he can't reasonably be expected to then immediately avoid a play at the plate. However, after some time passes, if a play develops at the plate, the batter must get out of the box and avoid interference. The batter should always be called out when he makes contact and is outside the box. Rules: 2.00 INTERFERENCE, 6.06(c) 2. The ball is dead on a foul-tip. FOUL-TIP RULE MYTH There is nothing foul about a foul-tip. If the ball nicks the bat and goes sharp and direct to the catcher's hand or glove and is caught, this is a foul-tip by definition. A foul-tip is a strike and the ball is alive. It is the same as a swing-and-miss. If the ball is not caught, it is a foul ball. If the nicked pitch first hits the catcher somewhere other than the hand or glove, it is not a foul-tip, it is a foul ball. Rules: 2.00 FOUL-TIP, STRIKE 3. Runners may not advance when an infield fly is called. NO ADVANCE ON INFIELD FLY RULE MYTH An Infield-fly is no different than any other fly ball in regard to the runners. The only difference is that they are never forced to advance because the batter is out whether the ball is caught or not. Rules: 2.00 INFIELD-FLY, 6.05(e), 7.10(a) 4. The pitcher must come to a set position before a pick-off throw. MUST SET TO PICK RULE MYTH The pitcher is required to come to a complete stop in the Set position before delivering the pitch, not before making a throw. Rule: 8.05(m) 5. The runner is always safe when hit by a batted ball while touching a base. HIT BY BALL ON BASE RULE MYTH The bases are in fair territory. A runner is out when hit by a fair batted ball while touching a base, except when hit by an infield-fly or after the ball has passed a fielder and no other fielder had a play on the ball. If the runner is touching first or third, he is not out unless the ball touches him over fair territory. If one foot is on the base and the other is in foul ground and he is hit on the foul ground foot, he is not out. It is a foul ball. (If the ball has not passed beyond first or third.) Rules: 5.09(f), 7.08(f)
