Pitching Count of 3 Balls and 2 Strikes
In Detroit Catholic League play, a maximum count of 3-2 shall be used at all times. A walk will be issued with three balls. A strike out is recorded with two strikes.
The only exception applies with a one-strike bunt. The first attempted one-strike bunt that goes foul does not result in a strike-out. Any additional attempt to bunt that goes foul does result in a strike out.
Slide or Surrender
In Detroit Catholic League play, collisions are to be avoided. The slide or surrender rule places the responsibility on the base runner to avoid contact by sliding, or surrendering to the defensive player with the ball. A player without the ball must avoid contact with the baserunner. If the runner fails to slide or surrender, he is ruled out. If the defensive player interferes, obstruction rules apply. Malicious contact, or an attempt to injure in the opinion of the umpire, can result in ejection.
Mercy Rule
The Detroit Catholic League employs a mercy rule to shorten play for games with large run differentials.
The game will be called at any time after five complete innings (four and a half if the home team leads) if, at the end of a complete inning, either team leads by at least 10 runs.
The game can be called at any point regardless of current inning if either team achieves a lead of at least 18 runs.
Regardless of final score, the largest margin of victory from a single game that can be used for tie-breaking purposes is 10 runs.
No Appeals
There are no appeals in Detroit Catholic League play. If the umpire observes a runner missing a base during play, he will call for time at the end of the play, declare the runner out, and make any appropriate adjustments as necessary.
Eligibility
Since the Wildcats play in the Detroit Catholic League, the eligibility requirements of the MHSAA are honoured by the baseball team. The primary effect of this is that students are eligible to participate during their first four years of high school. No OAC students may play for the Wildcats.
