The Villa Victor's Golf Coach, Mr. Dan Ek brings an important perspective to the position. Ek got his start in golf carrying golf bags at a local country club. "It was a great experience. I used the money to pay for part of college. The contacts I made have benefited me greatly. I recommend caddying to any one who takes up golf." According to Ek, the free golf on Monday wasn't the only benefit: "Caddying for some of the best amateurs in the State really helped me understand the game. Anyone can be a ball striker. I learned about strategy, course management, and composure. They are also keys to the game." Working in the Erie Charity Classic only added to Ek's experience. He has worked for numerous PGA Tour Players in Erie, including Master's Champions George Archer and Fred Couples. The highlight in Ek's Caddying career came at the 1992 Classic. Working with PGA tour player Bill Britton, the duo got out to a then course record 62 to lead the tournament. Britton's dramatic Birdie on the 36th and final hole gave him the championship. It gave Ek something else. "I can tell you I learned alot from caddying, and the 1992 Charity was a great example of that. I learned about the pressure of Match Play, (what it basically came down to)and persevering even though we lost the lead just two holes into the second day. Bill Britton is simply the hardest working golfer I had ever seen, and I strive to instill that work ethic and determination in my team members. It will certainly benefit them later in life." Ek, a life long resident of Erie, is married to Marlene Weindorf Ek, also an Erie native. They have two sons, Bobby (already swings a club better than dad) and Tommy (Born in January 2003). Based on his work hours, Marlene, his wife has already been selected for sainthood! Wednesday, July 18 2008 PIAA Sports Physicals Policy Change
