Vets Outduels McCauliffe 51-49
On Monday, December 10, the Vets Wrestling Team defeated a game McCauliffe squad 51-49. Vets jumped out to an early lead behind pins from Joe Ghione (70), Connor Maliff (75) and Matt Lyons (80). Ghione and Maliff both improved to 3-0, while Lyons picked up his first career Middle School victory. McCauliffe fought back winning 6 out of the next 8 matches, as Vets was only able to come away with a pair falls from Hunter Bechtle (100) and Matt Moore (115). Bechtle, leading only 2-0 entering the third period, was able to take his opponent down to his back to record the fall, while Moore reversed his opponent to his back in the second period to secure the 6. Doug Chuck, trailing by 2 entering the third period, reversed his opponent and put him to his back to earn an exciting 6-3 victory at 126. Chris Jarvie (130) followed by recording a first period pin and Anthony Miller continued the string of wins with a decision at 138. McCauliffe responded by pinning in the next 2 matches to set up a decisive match at 158, where Dylan Casper was able to hold on for a 5-3 victory. The Cougars sent out their Captain next at 170, and Cenzo Diodato did not disappoint as he made quick work of his opponent recording an 11 second pin. Ezra Figueroa (185) nearly clinched the match as he fought off his opponent for all but 10 seconds in the third period, when he finally surrendered a fall. Vets led by 5 going into the finale, but they were without starting Heavyweight Chris D'Elia who was ill at home. D'Elia's replacement, Ryan Townley, was apparently pinned at the end of the first period, but the ref concluded that the pin was after the buzzer had sounded. With the Cougars hopes still alive, Townley fought off several halfs in the second period, before taking control of the match in the third, dropping a 6-3 decision. Townley's will to stay off his back symbolized the total team effort that enabled Vets to secure a thrilling victory. Next up Vets hosts Toms River South on Wednesday, December 12.
