Freshmen edge Santa Barbara 5-4
Freshmen Cougars gain their second league victory against Santa Barbara at home today. The first couple of innings were a little rough with errors on both sides; at the top of the 4th inning, Santa Barbara was ahead 4-1.  The Cougars came alive in the bottom of the 4th inning, (probably because Ms Wyatt came to watch) and scored 4 runs. This put the Cougars up by 1, and they maintained the 5-4 score throughout the remainder of the game.

Nat Norman had 2 singles and 2 RBI's, Billy Davidson had a double, an RBI, and scored twice, Dan Russell had an RBI and scored, Jason Monatgue had a double and scored, Jarek York had an RBI, Myles Shoemaker and Nick Rudolph scored. Varsity win conference opener 7-4 over Dos Pueblos; lose 6-13 to Torrance
Varsity Cougars picked up their first league win over Dos Pueblos in 8 innings with a walk off 3 run homer by Brendan Carr in the bottom of the 8th. Nick Griffith pitched 5-1/3rd innings giving up 2 earned runs, Sam Rinaldi, Glenn Wasden and Brian Sullivan pitched the final 2 2/3rd innings with Brian Sullivan getting the win. Additional offense came from Matt Russell (3 for 5) with a triple and scored 2 times, Tyler Hawkins had 2 hits, scored, and had an RBI, Marshall Comden, Blake Tucker, Joseph Trigueiro each had hits.

The Varsity Cougars were “underwhelmed” by Torrance 13-6 in a bunt and steal fest. Torrance took “small ball” to the limit and scored 13 runs with 3 hits leaving the infield. They stole 8 bases, got two more on balks, and 4 more on a variety of infield miss cues. For those counting, that's 14 extra bases; pretty impressive. I think I know what practice will focus on next week….. Offensively Marshall Comden went 2 for 3 with a double and run scored, Tyler Hawkins went 2 for 3 with a run, Nick Griffith went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Matt Russell had a hit and scored, Brendan Carr had a double and scored twice, Dennis Doherty went 1 for 2 and had an RBI, and Blake Tucker had a hit and scored a run.

JV lose 0-6 to Torrance
JV Cougars played well but were shut out after leaving several on base against Torrance losing 0-6. Best chance to score came in the sixth when Edgar Flores, Casey Gladden, and Braeden Ayub each hit singles to load the bases. With one out, Nick Torres hit what appeared to be a sure triple down the right-field line, though it was caught by the line-guarding first baseman who then stepped on the bag doubling off the runner to end the inning.

Edgar Flores and Mike Arias went 2-4; Casey Gladden, Ryan Sohn, and Braeden Ayub each had one-base knocks. Reed Nothwang started and pitched three innings, Tyler Patton pitched two in relief, and Griff Garrabrant closed.

Less than 24 hours after celebrating their victory against Dos Pueblos, the freshmen came back and did it again, beating Moorpark 4-3 at home on Saturday. Sam Patton pitched an excellent game, giving up only 4 hits and striking out 3 in 7 innings.

Offensively, the Cougars had fewer hits that the day before, but took advantage of walks, errors, and 4 hit batters to get the job done. Billy Davidson, Nick Rudolph, Robert Costigan, and Sam Patton each had singles, with 1 RBI each for Rudolph, Costigan and Patton. Nathaniel Norman drove in the fourth run on a line drive mishandled by Moorpark’s third baseman.

Next game is Tuesday, 3:15 p.m. at home against Santa Barbara.

Pre-season Varsity Update
The Varsity team is 1-4 at the end of the Easton tournament, but could easily be 3 – 2 without a few errors. "If you take away three innings we could be 4 – 1 against some of the best teams in Southern California" said Paul Togneri. "We have competed against the eventual 3rd place team in the Easton tournament (Cleveland), in addition we have played Quartz Hill, Kennedy, and last years CIF champion Simi Valley; all power house teams in the CIF Southern Section. We have seen 90+ MPH pitching and are scoring enough runs to win games and our pitching is doing fine if you take away an inning or two. “If we can shore up our defense a little bit we have the opportunity to win the Channel League this year, as most teams except San Marcos are very young."

Tuesday, March 17

Easton Tournament '09 - Varsity drop two games: 0-7 to Cleveland, 4-9 to Quartz Hill
Varsity lost two games over the weekend. They got their “ugly” game out the way early against one of the powerhouse teams in SoCal, Cleveland HS. 2 hits with 6 errors pretty much sums it up, so we will leave it at that. In the second game the team lost to another strong program, Quartz Hill, in a much closer game than the score indicated. “If we take away two of their hits we win this game” said Head Coach Paul Togneri. Matt Russell led the team with 2 hits (double, single) and a run scored. Ivan Flores and Ben Mann each had a hit and an RBI. Tyler Hawkins, Blake Tucker, each had a hit and scored. Cougar Winter Classic 09 - Recap

COUGAR CLASSIC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT WRAPS UP THIS PAST WEEKEND
IN VENTURA & SANTA BARBARA

Buena High team wins Varsity (18U) division San Marcos High team wins JV (16U) division

Ventura, Calf., February 16, 2009 - Twelve teams from Santa Ynez to San Bernardino completed the Winter Cougar Classic baseball tournament over the weekend at Ventura and San Marcos High Schools. Ventura High Baseball sponsors tournaments for High School, travel and All-Star teams in February and June so kids from Ventura County and the surrounding area can play competitive tournament baseball without having to travel to Orange County, where most baseball tournaments are held.

Buena High and Hueneme High both went 4 – 0 for the tournament, but Buena edged out Hueneme by allowing fewer runs. “Probably the best game of the tournament was the Saturday game between Hueneme High vs. Inland Terror, a travel team from San Bernardino. Hueneme ended up winning 6 to 3, but the game could have gone to either team” said Ventura head coach Paul Togneri. “Hueneme with junior right hander. Jesus Valdez on the mound is going to be a very formidable team to beat this year in the Pacific View League” “I did not see San Marcos play but is sounds like they are going to have a strong team in the Channel League as well” he added.

The JV division was also close as San Marcos and Ventura both went 3 – 1, with San Marcos edging out Ventura, because it allowed one fewer run in the tournament.

“This is a great way for players to get a head start on their upcoming High School season as well as coaches to get a an early look at some of the kids in their program” said Rob Crawford, Head Coach for San Marcos High in Santa Barbara.

Said David Griffith Tournament Director “It turns out that Ventura is a perfect place to host baseball tournaments as it provides a venue for local teams, as well as teams from the Central Coast to play Southern California teams who would like a change of scenery. “Normally the weather is perfect in Ventura for baseball, however it was a challenge this year with all the rain the past two weeks” “We want to thank San Marcos High for allowing us to schedule games on their field as the rains from the past two weeks left both fields a Buena High unplayable.” “We also caught a break from the weather as it rained out the Friday afternoon games, but it was beautiful this weekend and we were able to get in two full days of baseball and complete the tournament” he added.

The Cougar Classic baseball tournaments are held over Presidents Day week in February and the last week of June at Ventura High and other local baseball fields. The Presidents day tournament is focused on High School and travel teams getting ready for the upcoming season; while the June tournament is put on to allow All-Star teams to get ready for their respective All-Star tournaments. There is also a 18U division for travel and High School teams in June to get in additional competitive games after the end of the High School baseball season.
